This is the kind of channel that restores my faith in YT (and humanity in general on some level). Great content. You've just about convinced me to try one of these Cobbit styles. My first pipe was also a MM cob, bought in a local shop to get me started. My story mirrors yours in a lot of ways. What a fun journey it has been, and I'm still learning a lot.
First pipe ever picked up was a MM as well. Recommended to me by a local tobacconist. I’ll never forget that first time… Walking into the Smokey, dark lit room that had a fog hanging about it. Out from the back lounge an old man carrying a cigar emerged, parting the smoke as he came. As I looked around I noticed that his shop was very under stocked. The humidor had maybe two boxes of cigars. There were maybe 4-6 lonely pipes and tins hanging out in the glass cabinet, but it had a mystical quality. I introduce myself. The old man introduces himself as Paul while talking through a cigar between his teeth. I ask him about his shop and if he could educate me on pipe smoking. He took the cigar out of his mouth, put it in the ashtray and took a deep breath in like your dad about to give you a valuable life lesson. He grabbed a MM and commenced schooling me and pointed me to a very mild tobacco. I believe it was called Whitehall. In any event I walked out of that shop enchanted and hooked. I’m now a pipe smoker and have Paul to thank. Sadly he is out of business now. He retired, which I’m happy for him. He’s been there for 30+ years he told me. I hope he’s well. Anyways that’s my story😝
Love your Videos. I started pipe smoking short time ago, and it helps me against anxiety and stress. Got one of these babies 2 and is really a good smoke. Thx a lot man for all your nice videos. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪, Bastian
I love that description: “island of calmness”, thank you! So glad to hear that you feel this way. Come back at 1pm CST today for a brand new Smoke With Me video, my longest video yet! :)
I'm in the 2nd year of my pipe smoking journey...started with a Missouri Merrschaum Legend and then a Country Gentleman both are wonderful smokers. Also enjoy my Dr.Grabow Rusticated Omega.Last Christmas I gifted myself a Peterson xl02 bent apple spigot it is a great Pipe and very well made and just beautiful.... but as far as Smokeability the corn cob's and the Grabow are just as good considering their affordability.Enjoy your videos very much! Keep on Puffin!!
It's just not possible to watch one of your videos without leaving in a good mood. I was actually rereading There and Back Again today! I grew up in western Kentucky on a small farm and usually, if my grandpa was awake, he had a corncob pipe in his mouth. That's where I learned a love of the pipe as a child growing up in the 60s
Kevin, just wanted to say how much I enjoy your content! Your videos are always very entertaining through your storytelling, informative in your tobacco reviews, and just relaxing to listen to throughout the day while I work, much in the same way that John Harden (aka Matches860 always was). Thank you for your contributions and keep up the great work!
Missouri is a wonderful place to smoke, so much beautiful scenery and wonderful nature. There's a bluff on the Ozark Trail that overlooks the Huzzah Valley that I simply can't get enough of.
Man I need to get me a cobbit. I really want a Diamond back. Hoping today to go to a local tobacconist and pick up another Legend. I dogged the other one as it was my first pipe and I have no idea what I was doing… still don’t😂 I’m more educated now then I was and a lot of it is thanks to this channel.
I have 3 MM Country Gentleman, 2 straight, one bent. The MM Shire Cobbit arrives in two days and I am stoked to smoke it. The only wood pipe I use else wise is a MacQueen Churchwarden. Love it long time before a lazy afternoon nap on the back porch but the Country Gentleman is the pipe I enjoy the most. I can't catch a fish without it.
Was going to ask if they’d make a good first pipe for someone looking into getting into the hobby. I got all the answers I needed watching you puff away at this great looking pipe. Big plus for them being so affordable.
Kevin - great story told by a natural story teller - thoroughly enjoyed how you came to both the pipe and cob worlds. Best that your journey just keeps getting better. Be well and keep it awesome - peace
I have a country gentleman it's a lovely pipe you have inspired me to buy the dwarve and hobbit corn cobs I also just got a little 7 inch joydelco briair churchwarden it was a 30 dollar grab off Amazon had a pouch pipe bag knocker and czech tool and some screens and cleaners it's honestly one of the best other than my cob iv found so far its nice lite and smokes nice
@@hobbitonpiper I haven’t smoked the shire yet, just got it yesterday. Right now I think the Apple Diplomat is my favorite, with the Mark Twain in a very close second. I like the look of the Twain shape better, but the Apple just smokes great. The Country Gentleman is a fine pipe, also. It can get a little hot if you go fast on it, I’ve currently reserved it for my Bob’s Chocolate Flake. I’ll probably use it with some of my other Gawith flakes, too. It has the deepest bowl of the regular sized MMs. I always use filters in them. Not too worried about the shire not being filtered, though. Im trying to decide what blend to start with.
@@Sleezyleisure14 I got a Forever Stem recently (my video with the blue stem thumbnail), it’s a pretty cool upgrade for my CG (a bit pricey), loving it!
Thank you for helping me as i start to use the corn cob pupes I have one that i first used today and i enjoyed it better than my expensive pipes I ordered 2 more Missouri Meerchaum pipes Cant wait to try when i receive them
Hi! I own three CG corn cobs and you're correct, they are far and beyond the best smokers I have. I also own a diplomat, and that's a very close second. Loved the relaxing video with the sounds of nature on the background.
Awesome! I figured you guys would confirm my suspicions that it’s a great pipe. :) So glad your enjoying the content, hope you’ll subscribe and return again soon!
Great story! I love my cobs and always smoke them when I mow, fish, kayak, etc. Then I won’t be upset if I break it or lose it. And your right they are wonderful smokers. Thanks for sharing.
I have one CG with wood on the bottom and a custom yellow-milky acrylic stem . Man, it's incredible! I own a shire like yours too and, well, not quite my favourite though. The queen is, anyhow, the Free Hand ahhhh ! You need one of them!
It’s great! More thoughts on it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gv_eYGxXBZw.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E5S04rF2M80.html
If you haven’t been to the factory it’s worth the visit. The wife and I get a air bnb every year in Hermann. For my treat we make the trek over to Washington. It’s a neat little town.
A little late to commenting on this vid but this is exactly the way I started! Picked up a cob, Czech tool, and an ounce of house blend from my local tobacconist (B&B Tobacconist in Asheville). Cost me all of about 20 bucks! Cobs are so awesome!
So I’m a huge cigar smoker and collector, about 10 years ago I wanted to kinda get into pipe smoking so I bought a savinelli pipe smoked it about 3 49 times and I don’t know why I stopped. So I’m just starting to get back into it and I just bought the Missouri meerschaum country gentleman lol it will be here today sometime
Not sure how I missed this video back in May but after watching a little documentary on Missouri Meerschaum, I purchased the Shire Cobbit and a tin of their 150th Anniversary tobacco a honey/vanilla blend directly from their website. What a treat, and it certainly has changed my mind on what a corncob pipe can be.
Started with a MM cob pipe 2 months ago. I now have 5. Still trying to establish cake in my briar & have a meerschaum on order but the corncob 🌽 smokes best. Thanks 🙏🏻 for your videos.
I like your videos. You touch on some basics for new pipe smokers while keeping on topic. Great videos, I’ll be watching regularly. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! Hoping to have a little something for everyone here. If you guys keep watching I guess I’ll have to keep creating, haha :) thanks again
I have made what I call my “Ranger Cobbit”. I took a bent Country Gentleman and put the longest Forever Stem in black on it. It’s now a completely different pipe and definitely what I’d call a “semi-Churchwarden!”
This pipe just arrived to me today. This a fantastic pipe. I like it way better than my Dr. Grabow. One doesn't think fancy when they think corncob but this thing definitely is.
@@hobbitonpiper Glad to be here. It's great. I'm down in Rolla, MO. Took 2 days to arrive. Glad I purchased it. Do you know if the stem is glued in? I wanted to twist mine just a little but it is tight and I'm afraid I will snap it
@@Justin28082 it is not glued in and important to remove for cleaning. If yours has the silver band, hold onto that part and keep it attached…only the solid black stem should be removed, so begin trying to lightly rotate it back and forth while keeping the silver ring still. Eventually it should begin to be lightly pulled while u gently rotate it back and forth till it comes out! :)
I sure do own a country gentleman lol, bent with a forever stem. The stem makes all the difference for me I test blends in it until I know I can dedicate the blend to a Briar. Thank you for the sub. Hope you have an outstanding week. Be well. - H
I love America. No matter where it's at. It's beautiful. New subscriber. Enjoyed your video. Budget pipes are the best lol. Be blessed and keep those videos a coming.
Thank you, I was hoping you would be here soon! Nothing wrong at all with a well made budget pipe! They smoke very well. Thanks so much for the kind words :)
The country gentleman was one of my early pipe purchases, when all I was smoking was aromatics. What I have learned is I much prefer the surface area of a MM Pride or a rusticated or sandblasted briar. They stay cooler on the hand and I prefer the texture feel versus a smooth finish, although a smooth finish is much prettier! Your videos are very smooth and well paced. Enjoying the content and your analogies when describing the different blends in the reviews make it easy to digest and help to pick out the different nuances of the blends. Great work!
Agreed on the cobs! They seemed to be “less than” to me initially, but they are an amazing product, that really probably should cost more based on the production and labor that go into them based on a few videos I’ve watched on how they are made. I probably have 20+ on hand, unsmoked for when I know either I may introduce myself to a new blend, or possibly introduce someone to the hobby. They are consistent, affordable, and really provide a great experience, plus with the low weight, are easy to clinch. I hope MM continues their great legacy, and I hope you continue to bring great content, confidence and information to this community. You are genuine in your videos, and welcoming. A great fit for such a great community, educating, exploring, and just admire your love for the outdoors and all great things that have been created for this world to enjoy and observe! Have a great day!
Hey Hobbit! I’m really digging the content. You’re doing it right! You asked in your last episode why cobs don’t ghost. Well it’s quite simple. The porous material like clay, meerschaum, and corn cob actually absorb the oils where the solid material of briar doesn’t. The oils sit on the surface or in the cake of a briar and vaporizes when it’s reheated, giving of its flavor. Cheers!
Wonderful! I love learning new things! What a perfect explanation. That’s part of the power of our interaction here, we can all learn and pass on what we’ve learned to others! I really hope you’ll subscribe and comment again soon! :)
Hi Kevin. Yep, I have a Country Gentleman, love that one. That was my first MM pipe, but not my last! I also love the Charlestown Cobbler. I'm thinking about getting a forever stem for my CG.
A MM corn cob has to be the best “first pipe” of all time to start out on. I have several myself including the country gentleman and I really enjoy the fact that they don’t seem to ghost. Great story by the way!!
You can't go wrong with a corncob pipe. I love them, in fact I have quit buying high dollar pipes. Now all I buy is the corncob, they smoke better than a lot of my expensive pipes.
Corn cob pipes really are great. I have a number of MM cobs including a Country Gentleman, and they always smoke nice. They are an honest no frills pipe. Take care.
Hi Kevin, once again a nice slow paced interesting production, and to answer your question, yes, I have two Country Gentleman MM Corn Cobs, both compliment what ever tobacco I smoke, allowing the true flavours to surface, I would like to add, that the large bowls help in no small way in achieving this. I am sure your investment will be a sound one. Keep Well, Steve.
Hello new friend ✌️ beautiful video ... I absolutely love hearing the birds on a such a beautiful day... thanks for the sub I got one coming your way 👍❤️❤️❤️oh and great pipe I have the snub nosed version
I have a bunch of Missouri Meerschaum pipes both new and estate. Still need one of these. Great pipes, priced for everyone. Love my Country Gentleman. Got a gorgeous custom stem on it from SeaCreatureCustoms on Etsy.
I have five MM’s I like them so well I ordered a Vermont forever stem for each of them and almost always pick one up over a briar. Good video my friend.
I love my cobs. I have a Wizard Cobbit that’s great for long smokes. I do have a Country Gentleman, and it’s been a great pipe. I’ve found, though, that I prefer the natural finish, so I shop Aristocob because he carries MM unfinished pipes that MM doesn’t have on their own site.
Love my Cobbit Shire! I have a Country Gentleman on the way. Also have a Brigham Chinook on the way, but that's another story. Lol! I'm finding I prefer my Shire to my old Made In London England briar that I've had forever! Who'd a thunk it?😉
GREAT video, Kevin! I LOVE MM cobs! I have that same Shire Cobbit and love it! I also have a Country Gentleman. You gotta have one! I love the bare naked little Missouri Pride cobs. They are light as a feather and smoke really cool. BUT, MY personal favorite is one that I got from The Pipe Nook called an Emerald. It is a FANTASTIC smoker, and a gorgeous little pipe with a swirl green, acrylic, fishtail stem! I think Eddie is sold out of them, currently, but when he gets more in, I would encourage you to order one. They only cost like $27. Heck, I’d pay TWICE that (🤫Don’t tell Eddie Gray I said that😂!). Have a great evening, my friend! Cliff
Such great info! Ok, I will get a Country Gentleman. Will you comment or email me when you see an Emerald available? I’ve never heard of that one! Thank you so much for the feedback, Cliff! The YTPC is so knowledgeable and kind, it really feels like family! Hopefully more YTPC members will hear about our great interaction here as we progress, it’s hard to know the best way to get the word out! Thanks again!
Yes Sir, I will certainly let you know if I hear of any Emeralds becoming available. If you haven’t checked out Eddie’s website, it is: thepipenook.com. He has lots of pipes, tobacco, accessories, and he is a cool guy! I actually had breakfast with him last year when my family was on vacation in Florida. He is my online B&M. He has a live stream on RU-vid on most Wednesdays right around 5:00pm. You should try to catch it tomorrow, if you can. His RU-vid channel is The Pipe Nook. Cheers!
Well how about this!!! I just looked at The Pipe Nook website and Eddie DOES have The Emerald MM. Go check them out. $24, and he has both bent and straight. I have one of each😁!
@@cliffhiggins730 ordered the bent Emerald! I’ll feature it here on the channel sometime after it arrives! Also have a Country Gentleman on the way now! So more fun content is coming soon! :) Thanks again
The Cobbit Shire was the first pipe I ever purchased. It's also the pipe that I've had the most trouble with. I really wanted to love it but that's unfortunately not the case for me. It's the only pipe I own that gives me major issues with gurgling. The shank was loose from the start and leaked smoke between itself and the bowl. Eventually it completely separated from the bowl so I glued it back into place and sealed the leaks. The stem is also incredibly tight in the shank even after significant sanding so I don't even try to remove it for cleaning anymore. I keep telling myself to try another MM cob but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I just love my briars too much at this point. I even have a few Flogglewerks and MacQueen pipes that smoke really well even if the bowls are a bit on the small side.
It sounds like you got a cob that wasn’t made quite right, it happens. When they are right tho it makes for a really good inexpensive smoking option. I have my eye on that MacQueen Briar Ranger pipe… :)
@@hobbitonpiper are there any other “staple” or go to pipes that you can recommend? So far I have three MM cobs and one Brigham Heritage Briar. Any advice is much appreciated.
@@JS-pk5wt yes, JS, after your cobs, go watch my pipe story on the Savinelli 673 KS. There are MANY different ones to choose from (just type Savinelli 673 KS in on smokingpipes website or tobaccopipes website, and yes it’s going to cost you at least $80 minimum, but they are well worth the investment 100%. If you need cheaper recommendations tho let me know! :)
@@hobbitonpiper thanks! Definitely will look into it. I want a good pipe to last me a lifetime so this will be up my alley. Thanks again and have a good night. 🌙
@@JS-pk5wt lots of colors/skins to choose from for the Sav 673 KS. I’m confident you will love it. Keep me posted. I have the Alligator Red and the Roma Lucite versions.
I’m smoking my Shire Cobbitt watching this video lol. Smoking a house blend #32 aromatic. I smoke all my aromatics in the Cobb and all the non-aromatics in the Nording Briar.
I had a feeling you were going to say ‘Country Gentleman’ 😊 I own one and it’s a great smoker. I’m enjoying your channel. You have a calm and relaxing manner. We’re those birds at the end finches? They are loving your pergola! All the best my friend 🙏 Olie
I figured some of you would guess it immediately! :) I’ve ordered one now thanks to all of your encouragement to do so. Yes, those are American Goldfinch! They do seem to love the pergola. So glad you are here Billy
I have found that the neked or unfinished cobs smoke the coolest and for me the best. The Country Gentleman and the Fifth Ave. Apple smoke equally well. IMO
@@hobbitonpiper I have unfinished cobs 10-15 years old. I guess it depends on how much you smoke them and how you take care of them. Now that they put wooden plugs in the bottom they seem to hold up better. They only cost 8-15 dollars, why do you ask? Ha Ha
Do you clench your pipe when smoking? I am asking because i want to know how durable those stems are. I had a corn cob pipe and its stem got pretty dented after i smoked it for a short while.
I do, but not as often as many do and certainly not with a churchwarden (long stem) pipe like this one. I talk all about cobs, their stem durability, and remedy options in the following video for you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q4M8gJQ5R_E.htmlsi=di7ijgEDogf28JBo
I read somewhere not too long ago that when Mark Twain (a fellow Missourian) was asked by an interviewer why he was smoking a humble corncob pipe when higher-grade ones were available, Twain replied, "Why, this is a Missouri meerschaum!", thus originating the name subsequently adopted by the company. Can't vouch for the accuracy of the anecdote, of course, but it definitely sounds like something Twain would say. His family and in-laws tried in vain to get him to forgo the weed. One of his responses was: "After all, what does tobacco matter? Let's have another chapter of Deuteronomy!"
Great vid as always. Wondering how you feel about the gap between the stem and bottom of the bowl in the MM corncobs. Do you, fill with pipe mud, or just use it as is? How do you find the burn efficiency (ie do you find all the baccy gets burned under the protruding stem in the bowl?) Cheers!
I have no issue with them and no I don’t use pipe mud although many enjoy that. It’s a corn cob pipe, so I keep it as simple as possible for simple smokes. Tobacco burns just fine in them , and I also don’t get too caught up in the “down to white ash” concept. Some leaf simply doesn’t perform that way regardless of pipe and that’s ok. When it’s done it’s done, simply scrape out the dottle and load again when ready for your next bowl. You will taste a little of that wood in the bowl before that dowel gets charred, but it doesn’t take many bowls to achieve that charring.
I've 3 country gentleman, 3 bent and a straight 2not which are in the presentation box after watching this I'm gonna order a shire vobbit for 30 euro as I've got a wizard and the elf
I took the plunge and bought a few different pipes from MM. I have to say I am not overly impressed with the fit and finish of them. Having to make minor adjustements to make a new pipe useable was a bit of a let down.
@@hobbitonpiper not so much when you are ordering from overseas with a different currency. Attention to detail is still appreciated these days but very hard to come by it would seem
Oh very long. How long a bowl lasts is completely dependent on the cut and your cadence. Many experienced pipe smokers prefer smaller bowls and can easily get 90 minutes from them.
Hello Kevin. Another wonderful video! I am very happy to have found your channel. OGS is my daily smoke, love this tobacco. Mayby you have some recomendations for bright, citrusy viginias from US production? There is no corn cob in my pipe collection, but after your video it is time to buy one or two ... . Thanks for your content. Best regards from Germany. Peter
Hello Peter, so glad you are here! Sounds like we have a lot in common! Yes I highly recommend trying out some cobs, they are fun and affordable! Two of my favorite bright/citrusy va’s I’ve reviewed (OGS & Capstan Gold), but I will keep a lookout for some from the US that I think you might enjoy also. Perhaps others here can respond to this as well!
@@hobbitonpiper Thanks Kevin for your suggestion. I will try to get one tin. It would by a pleasure for me to send you a tin of tobacco from my local dealer (so-called "Hausmischung") to hear your opinion of this tobacco (produced by Kohlhase & Kopp). If you are interessted please contact me under sbbq@outlook.de. Please don't feel put under pressure. If you are not interested it's absolutly OK. Best regards. Peter
I have a straight and bent Country Gentleman. I do like them, but I’ve ruined my bent by smoking so many different things in it, and now it just always tastes like old dark fired even if it’s just an aromatic.
@@hobbitonpiper I’ve heard they’re pretty affordable. I will tell you that my favorite pipe by MM is my Cobbit Wizard. I only smoke it when I know I have a couple of hours. Super deep chamber and long stem make it perfect for any type of tobacco.
Just found your channel on Onions recommendation and I like what I see. The plaster like finish and the name MM are from the invention of the pipe and the start of the company. The finish and the cob material let's it act in somewhat the same as a Meerschaum. I don't have a CG and don't plan to. I have 14 MMs, and my favorites are the Missouri Pride and the Diplomats. Prides are affordable and the "neked" ones breathe more than those cobs covered with plaster stuff, and so give a cooler smoke and lighter pipe. The Diplomats look great to me and are a match for my hand, but the CG not so much. Checkout aristocob.com for better prices and great customer service from two YTPC members. And, if you get a chance (when things get back to close to normal again) go to Washington and take the tour. We thought it.was. Great! -- Kent

@@hobbitonpiper you’re absolutely correct, my apologies, I searched under Churchwardens…. Just did it again and saw one 33$, one 35$, and one 45$, but after searching again under all cobs, I saw the one we’re taking about…. It’s not listed as a churchwarden, but it still a good long pipe. I’ll consider it, cheers from Canada.
