I wanted to explain to y'all and show you what a grasshopper is and why we use it on on the pipeline. I also show you my homemade ground clamp and explain when I would use it instead. Hope this answers some of your questions about the pipeline pipe ground tool.

That must be a Texas grasshopper! I was expecting the little one with the magnets. I gave you a thumbs up and a sub. Always glad to learn more about pipelines.

Great video and grasshopper design. In the 70's the body of many of them were made from files and the tang end had been heated and bent to fit in the bevel.

This is a great help to me. I am currently working on getting my pipe certs. The grasshopper your showing seems much more logical than some of the ones I've seen they sell in stores.

As a Pipeliner. Do you ever use a gouging rod and if so, when would you use it ? The only time I ever use a gouging rod, is when I need to remove welds on heavier gauge plate.

I got a ground similar to that as well....I sharpened the bolt end so that it digs through paint or I use a buffer to shine it real quick like. Keep up the awesome videos Austin

I am really enjoying your informational videos. I have welded for years and never seen a Grasshopper. I will be building a ground clamp like yours as well.

I weld a bolt on to vise grips and tighten on the ground cable at the bolt . works good on the grasshopper or your other device

So this being a recently acquired grasshopper, I have to ask: how many do you have? Do you keep quite a few or swap them out/leave them?

I was looking to either purchase a grasshopper or build one. One thing i didn’t hear you mention was the magnetic ones. The importance to avoid arcing alway from the bevel very important got it thanks. Are magnetic grasshoppers allowed? Does arcing alway from the bevel count as s repair against you?
@randomchannel4886
@randomchannel4886 6 лет назад
Texas Hunter better build one like he has.. Buddy tried makimg a magnetic one and even with insulators to isolate the magnets still managed to make an arc thru the coating
@arosswelding
@arosswelding 6 лет назад
Texas Hunter Just be careful with the magnet one. I’ve seen a lot guys use them but like randomchannel said, There is a chance it could arc. Keep a close eye on it. Check the insulators and keep the grinding dust off the magnets. And no it don’t count as a repair but def doesn’t look good to have to cut a weld out because of an arc burn. Thanks for the questions and feed back.

If your concerned with arcing on the pipe just strip some welding lead to bare copper tie it around your pipe, copper will never arc
@chrisrenaud4141
@chrisrenaud4141 6 лет назад
i keep an old tig torch lead around i've had forever stripped nice and flexible about 13 feet long to get a ground on funny shape things or to extend my ground cable if needed tie it on clip it on whatever works if the gauge is too small double it over make it half as long awesome thing all welders should have for sure
