I remember watching the 2022 draft and seeing Brad Lambert drop to 26 and literally jumping out of my seat in excitement for Montreal to select him then we end up selecting Mesar.. Now look Lambert is almost a PPG in the AHL at 19 and looking like a star in the making.

Very interesting conversation. Talking about Mesar, I remember the first time I saw him at the Habs camp 2 years ago. I was very much impressed by what I saw. I still hope that, playing with talented players, he will blossom into the player i would like him to be. This guy could be excellent is he manages yo adapt to the north american ice and style of play. Regarding Mailloux, lets remember that he didn't look at all out if place in his first NHL game, even scored an assist. Not worried about this guy at all. I think Mailloux will, on the long run, turn out to be the Hab's best d-man. He has the best balance between offence and defense, he's got one heck of a shot, and he is gritty. Roy will be a good all around player, who knows his limits and plays very well within these limits. I see him having an impact at the same level as Likonen. Same thing as Owen Beck btw.

Great podcast as always guys! Given you both have said you look at the comments can you please comment on the following in your next podcast. My question relates to Yevgeni Volokhin whom Marc Antoine mentioned briefly. Many "experts" have been saying Ivan Demidov is the best winger in the draft despite him playing in the MHL. Volokhin, who turned 19 in April, put up extremely impressive numbers this past season in the MHL so why isn't he in your top 10? Why do you rate Kapanen as being the higher prospect? Yes he had a great playoff and did well in the IIHF but do you actually think he has a higher ceiling? Many thanks and best regards from Scotland.

Good lists guys, I agree with most of it, I tend to exclude players that aren't here like Fowler etc.. We have 7 roster spots opening after 24-25, and as spots open I see, Hutson, Mailloux, Beck, Heineman, Roy, joining the team this season. Guys I wonder about are Kidney, Davidson, Andersen, Trudeau, I'm curious to see if they earn a call-up. Thanks, good show.

On the question of LTIR. A team in the beginning of the season has to fit all their contracts into the cap including LTIR. Once that is done, LTIR is calculated at that point. So Montreal would start the season with 10.5 million of LTIR space because of Price's contract. You can't simply aquire LTIR space and then have that extra space as cap room. Its why when Las Vegas picked up Weber's contract, they realized that they couldn't do much with it and immediately traded it to Arizona who could use it to get to the cap floor since they could use Weber's contract to get to the cap floor since it counts as one of your contracts. LTIR is not a magic bullet. What Las Vegas has to do is some serious cap shenanigans this off season since they won't be able to resign players like Marchesault or Martinez. For Montreal's part, Price's contract is basically dead money that they can't use. They can't really sign free agents until that is cleared in two years. Any money they do free up, they should be using it to sign their young core to new contracts since they will be demanding a higher contract. Its why Kent Hughes when he does a trade, he takes contracts that are expiring since if he took a multi year contract, then that cap hit will roll over into the next season and Hughes would have to factor that contract into the cap including Price's LTIR. So don't expect any splashy FA signings this year. Maybe next year Kent Hughes will go all in. But we have Price's LTIR for 2 years. Josh Anderson and Brendan Gallagher contracts for another 3 years. So we have 22.5 million tied up on 3 players that we are waiting on. And if you look it at that, that is a HUGE chunk of the cap space that is hamstringing Kent Hughes from doing anything dramatic. He has to wait and not destroy any flexibility in the future.
@racicop13
@racicop13 4 месяца назад
Well I agree 100% with you that we kind of have to wait it on regarding those 3 contracts. Maybe we could trade Anderson next season with some retention if he has some bounce back season but that is really the best case scenario. I might be wrong but I think teams can go 10% over the cap in the summer but then you need to use off-season LTIR and then you don’t accrue cap space during the season which complicates a few things with rookie bonuses but I think this is something Montreal might be open to do next summer if needed for the past year of Price’s contract if they think the team is ready to take a step.

A top 5 of Fowler, Mailloux, Reinbacher, Roy and Hutson screams of a lack in offensive prospects, the top center prospect being Beck adds on top of that, hell Roy was a 5th round pick that developed himself into a potential top6 forward, like Harvey-Pinard, he willed his way into the lineup, he wasn’t a major piece in the plans of the Canadiens until recently. Please do not select another defenseman with either first round picks this year (and next), couldn’t care less if the scouts were 75% sure of getting a first pair defensemen by doing it either, because let’s face it being first pair in MTL currently doesn’t mean much league wide. Montreal needs offense very badly, they needed it 5 years ago, 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 30 years ago.
@powers1500
@powers1500 4 месяца назад
Montreal needs to get out of the draft with two solid picks with top6 potentiel. This likely is the last draft they may be in a position to do it since most fans/media expect clear improvements as of next season...but I still don't believe they will make the playoffs !!!

Great show, love detailed explainations I can understand, Listen, with a 32 team league & maybe on the rise, this league is for the good teams to stay good (weather, no taxes, trades between only good teams only) why not having the teams not in the playoffs have a #1 Pick, it would accelerate rebuilds for team and get a parity.

Reinbacher, Hutson, Mailloux, Roy, Beck, Engstrom, Kapanen, Fowler, Heineman, Konyushkov. Might not be any impact players outside the top 4. Going to be an interesting year. Mgmt probably making tough decisions and I think it'll be quite the carousel between MTL and LAV as prospects bounce up and down. Wouldn't be surprised to see either Beck or Kap play as many games as Struble did.

They’re sleeping on Mesar. I’m a Kitchener Rangers season ticket holder and he is an elite playmaker. Your dialogue proves to me that you don’t watch these players play. What you probably don’t know is he was moved from 1st line wing to 2nd line Centre. His only issue is that he did not have the linemates who could finish. He makes passes that are jaw dropping and how often can you say that about a player? He surprises his teammates who don’t expect the pass. He could be a valuable powerplay quarterback.
@scottm9010

Hutson at #3 is an excellent way to flush your credibility down the toilet 😂. The same guy who said Mesar’s #’s weren’t spectacular enough is fine with Reinbacher’s abysmal performance in Switzerland.
@viper29ca
@viper29ca 4 месяца назад
I think the only way Reinbacher makes the Habs out of camp, is of they trade Savard over the summer. And of course if you trade Savard over the summer, you loose your insulation for Hutson, if you have Hutson start the season in MTL. If they keep Savard, he will obviously be traded at some point before the trade deadline, being a UFA. Let Hutson flourish playing with Savard, then bring up Reinbacher when Savard gets traded. Won't hurt Reinbacher to have more time in the AHL, and definitely won't hurt Hutson to pair with Savard

Engstrom was pushed down the depth chart by Lian Bischel at the end of the season and playoffs. He was playing third pairing minutes at the end.
@depressean8295
@depressean8295 4 месяца назад
My top ten Habs prospects! 1. Reinbacher (think he's being underrated as a prospect still and will absolutely thrive at the NHL level probably quite quickly too) 2. Hutson (I think a pair of Hutson Reinbacher has top 5 NHL pairing potential, their games compliment eachother so well) 3. Roy (I suspect he'll be a 2nd line player with us next season, probably playing with Dach and Newhook) 4. Fowler 5. Beck 6. Xhekaj 7. Kapanen 8. Engstrom 9. Mesar 10. Konyushkov I don't really have confidence in anyone else being a legitimate NHL player. I do think a player that isn't talked about enough is Jared Davidson. I really love his offensive tools, he isn't tiny, he has the best shot on the rocket imo. His season in Laval wasn't great but I think he would do better in the NHL than the AHL, I don't think the fast and chaotic game of the AHL lends itself well to his skillset, but for those of us who watched the inter team scrimmage last season where he scored a hat trick I believe? I think we all saw the offensive potential he has. He might be a bit of a late bloomer but I think his ceiling is actually very high and he's worth keeping an eye on. His hands, skating and shot are all qualities that I believe could make him a genuinely solid NHLer, but I think he has to get a little lucky in opportunities to get the chance and environment he needs to find that success, and idk if that opportunity will come with the habs sadly. if we do let him go, I think he could be a diamond in the rough for whatever organization picks him up. His numbers, even in the playoffs, with the Seattle Thunderbirds were very impressive and I think he deserves to be talked about more than he is. His back half of last season was better than his early season and I still have hope that he could have a breakout year in the AHL at some point and earn that chance at the next level.

Good comment. I've been raving about Davidson since his first rookie camp. He keeps exceeding expectations as a junior and then in the AHL. He was tagged Trois-Rivières at the beginning of the 2023 season and look what he did, securing a spot on the Rocket roster. We don't know his ceiling yet, and he might end up in the NHL.

Good job guys!
