You flew her like a fighter. She's supposed to bimble about and not do loops. It's like watching a 747 get treated like a eurofighter. Just ain't right. However, I liked your video. And I have just received plans for a 1/2 scale cub. See you guys in about two years then.
Nice flying Cub but you better put brace rods on the horizontal stabilizers top and bottom like full scale J3 Cubs have. I have owned 5 full scale J3 Cubs including a rare "Rawe" version metal spar clipped wing Cub. The Rawe Cub had 90hp and was fully certified unlike the wood spar Reed clipped Cubs. I am also an experienced r/c modeler so please heed this warning. If you lose one of those stabs someone could get hurt, not to mention you will lose a nice model plane.
I have a 1/4 scale J-3. Engine is a two cyl boxer-4 stroke. Gotta keep it as real as I can. I HATE 2 strokes with an undying passion, especially for scale.
That thing is going to make a HUGE hole in the ground when the engine blows up and it augers in. Hope they get a video of that as an indication of what happens when you treat an engine like this. Oh, and I’ve flown a few Cubs, including a clip-wing. None of them ever performed like this...
If you build any bigger you may as well build a full size one. What is the max weight? Must be getting close to requiring an aviation authority registration.
what kind and size of engine does it have. honestly, large enough to carry an average size person. reminds me of the diminutive all aluminum Cri-cri double engine miniature aircraft that accommodates a pilot that is small enough to be stored in a car garage with its less than12 ft wingspan and yet flies and maneuvers faster than a real Piper Cub.
The landing was more or less to scale, but the take-off left a lot to be desired. Reduce the throttle setting on take-offs and fly it like a real airplane.
Why some guys insist on constantly blipping the throttle, I don't know, even on a motorcycle its no good. Seems to be running rich as well. For me, I would prefer to see a less powerful engine and more scale like performance. It is flying around on high idle most of the time except when he is doing uncharacteristic aerobatics for the type.
+iwantou Clipped wing Cubs are used for aerobatics, look it up. This Cub was flown in a very scale-like, aerobatic manner consistent with Clipped Wing Cubs, by a very skilled flyer I might add. Regarding the powerful engine, it is better to have more power than necessary, and fly at reduced throttle. Running an engine slightly rich is not an issue, but I do think the engine sounded just right, most probably a four stroke. Extra power can get you out of trouble, marginal power will get you into trouble sooner or later. Anyways, the engine did not seem to be overly powerful for the model. Engine provided enough power for the best axial rolls I've seen a Cub perform, of course the pilot needed to apply correct amounts of elevator and rudder at precisely the right time.Nothing wrong with blipping throttle, it will not damage the engine, may cause extra wear on throttle servo, but no big deal, that is the personal style of the pilot. I rode motorcycles for many years and blipping the throttle hurt nothing. This pilot is very highly skilled, no question about it.
I have personally flown a full size clipped wing cub, you have no idea what you are talking about, they can not do harriers and knife edge or sustained inverted. or axial rolls. Models are over powered by nature, but my preference as I stated would be for slightly less than what was exhibited there. rich is always better than lean its true. The only reason for race cars o blip the throttle is to clear out the cylinders before a high rev start. It again is not indicative of how aircraft use their throttle. neither scale or sensible. If you are flying an unlimited plane like my 46% Ultimate bipe, having a large engine is par for the course. But even then I opted for a 3W red head 150cc vs. a 200cc which a lot of guys were slapping in them. I was of course preferring Aresti pattern aerobatics to 3D. but still i would torque roll and tow a 3 meter sailplane vertical to 2000 feet.
+iwantou I just completed a WM 30% J3 cub that the manufacturer specified a DLE 50cc for. I installed a DLE30cc to achieve a closer to scale power ratio. Maidened last weekend and the 30cc is still too much. I also ignored the recommended servo installations for rudder and elevator at the tail section and went with a pull-pull setup where the servos sit in the cabin at the CG point. The plane flies as a J3 should with this lighter setup. Landings are done at walking speed. Loads of fun to fly it like the full scale craft.
7 minutes and 15 seconds into the video I seen a passenger jet in the back ground is this not in violation with the faa ... I thought there was a five mile distance to be complied with so I guess its either a clear day or were not in Kansas anymore. sweet plane but whats up with the on/off throttle business oh well its your bird fly it the way you want.
All the lame complaints about the superb throttle management !! With no forward movement the prop wash is all you have to create airflow over the control surfaces. No idea of the physics, and definitely no hubris or social skills.
