You don't need to be a pastry chef to pipe. In fact, learning the skills of piping will help you with many of the baking projects in your kitchen. In this episode of "Bake It Up a Notch," Erin McDowell will show you how to handle a pastry bag, fill and refill the bag, choose (and clean) a pastry tip and create a number of different designs (flowers, shells, ropes, script and more!) to take your baking game to the next level. Tell us what you'll do with your new skills from this #bakingtutorial in the comments. Happy baking!

Wow, Erin! I wish you had been around 45 years ago. Now my arthritis doesn't allow me to use my hands that way, nor does my back allow the standing. Learning to decorate cakes, pies, pastries, etc. was always something I wanted to do, but I was working when classes were offered. I would have tried it with what you just showed us and gone from there. Alas, we can't stop getting older. I enjoyed this video so much. Anything you want to teach, I want to see. Thanks for your inspiration.

What about different consistency with frosting? That looks like a buttercream. I make a stiff frosting from coconut cream & dark chocolate chips, but the longer it's in the bag with my hot hand on it, the runner it gets. What can I do to stop that fro. Happening? Same thing happens with a whipped cream frosting.

I love how it comes out looking, and there are so many creative possibilities with it, but it looks like such a wasteful process. It looks like so much of the cream gets stuck to the plastic, and to the tip, and having to use all those utensils just to fill it. I was hoping you'd also demonstrate a cloth piping back. I presume they get re-used rather than disposed of, but how in hell do you keep them clean, and minimise waste from them? I recently made a batch of profiteroles, and rather than fool around with a piping bag, I just settled for an ice-cream scoop, and the results were just as good.

Sweet Lady. You have wonderful teaching techniques and videos. I save them to rewatch often ... But i am 77 yrs old and cooking and serving and waitressing (college😅) all my life. I love dogs too...in fact i surprised my scottie who was swiping chocolate off my kitchen counter by standing on top of my other scottie😜🐸 I WISH YOU DID NOT KEEP YOUR LOVELY PUP ON YOUR COOKING COUNTER FOR A VIDEO. Where i live dogs walk outside 4x a day ...and everyone brings dogs into stores: supermkts, pharmacies, Starbucks, etc. and it IS AGAINST THE LAW. I dealt with my dogs LEGALLY, tho once i shoved a very collapsible collie-mix into my down jacket to enter and purchase a pack of aspirin. True story😄 Your example as an extremely competent chef is wonderful. Your setting an example of a pup ON THE SAME COOKING COUNTER (YES EVEN IN YOUR OWN PRIVATE KITCHEN HAS MY HAIR STANDING ON END... For a long time!) Be well. Be lovely. Cook on. And Be an example of Best Behavior. Thank you.

Erin, you make me feel as though I am sitting down with a good ol' best friend! You're so fun, warm, and endearing! I am desperately TRYING to teach myself piping techniques and boy, is my teacher stupid. The worst part is that I am and always have been a "master it in a minute or forget it!" Seriously...I have ALWAYS been that way. So, on most things, I would learn just enough to do a good job (art classes, voice, clarinet, drums, piano, beauty school, just to name a few!), but never really master anything. Unfortunately, you either practice and LEARN this, or your work looks like a 3-year-old took over! Last night I gave this a whirl and my practice frosting was so hard to get through the tip! The recipe was Crisco, sifted powdered sugar, and a bit of water. The consistency of yours looked SO much easier to work with. Can you help me? ANY suggestions are certainly welcomed...from anyone! Erin, you are the sweetest little cupcake...God bless...Oh, wait! I forgot...I LOVE your precious pup...he's so adorable. (sorry, I forget his name). I have a husband & wife cat pair and when I got all my stuff out, they were really interested in what the heck was breakin' up the routine around here! Especially Hazel, the lady of the house! She's a carbs girl...anything sweet or salty, she's right there. Sorry so long...thanks for reading.

This weekend I made a Minecraft birthday cake and it was my first time doing frosting piping and here my issue: 1) as a newbie’s it took me more time than someone who knows how to do it resulting that the frost in bag was melting by the heat of my hand 2) when I did my research, i realized that their a various type of buttercream frost. I initially use the American one but this was way too sugary…a tea spoon can knock a kid down. I did a second batch of Italian meringue buttercream frost which was more acceptable. 3. I was surprised that a good amount of pressure is required for piping. It looks so easy on youtube. I will definitely buy a bigger bag as my little one was very difficult to manipulate.
