"Pippo" - Celebrating Giuseppe Di Stefano's Centenary 

He was the first tenor who’s voice I fell in love with. I recall to this day a music lesson at school when the class were asked to name their favourite band: Queen, Blondie, etc came the replies. I just said Giuseppe Di Stefano and my classmates looked at me bemused

How marvelous, how gorgeous, how organically handsome... there are many grand voices, only one Pippo... one and only!!!

The most touching and delicate voice but at the same time virile and powerful. What a GREAT singer. Few compare to him in his prime. Never another like him will come our way again! Thanks God for his life and the fact that we are able to have his recordings! Grazie Pippo!!!!

Coloro che seguono attualmente il melodramma , le operette, le canzoni napoletane le canzoni d'autore dovrebbero cercare le finalità di Di Stefano e cosa sia la vera arte del canto.... Meraviglioso l'inserimento di " Serenata Sincera" dove si può ammirare come Pippo Di Stefano si porgeva al suo pubblico con naturalezza, eleganza e fascino..... Unico !!!!

This is a beautiful recognition of a wonderful singer, Vincent. It also rhymes perfectly with my own obsession with Di Stefano - the most generous of tenors, always worth listening to, even in old age when his voice was, well shot, basically, but still gorgeous to hear. At his 70th birthday party (great look in the white tux as well), and even later. One of the best high Cs as well - a world away from the squawks that some tenors produce. Oh Wow, what a great tribute...and what a terrific channel!! I first discovered your work through your Mario Lanza tributes. I had been on a Lanza kick recently, and watching a lot of related RU-vid videos. I caught a couple of yours under "Recommendations", and really loved them! Now I see you also covered one of my other favorite tenors here. As expected, it is absolutely wonderful! Thank you, and keep doing what you do!!! PS-also REALLY enjoyed your own singing on the popular standard, "Beyond the Sea"! :-)

Many thanks for this, Vince. Di Stefano's fantastic interpretative gifts and irresistible personality just shine in this moving tribute. It was great to hear again too that incredible diminuendo he does on the high C on "Salut demeure chaste et pure." Today's lovers of Kaufmann and their ilk should also take note of Di Stefano's spot-on comments on what the *real* art of singing is! That beautifully phrased "Serenata Sincera" (which I'd never heard before) was a great choice to conclude with too, Vince.

I have most his recordings and the others I have downloaded from the internet, I play them often and never get tired of his wonderful voice, I also have a collection of Mario Lanza, I am 80 now and have listened to opera since when we could get La Scala broadcasts on our radiogram before I was a teenager.

@Vincent Di Placido - You have managed to combine two of my favorite things - Giuseppe Di Stefano, the greatest tenor of the 20th century, and Technics - I was the Technics USA Product Manager from 1977 thru 1992. As to Di Stefano - I was privileged to attend the 100th centenary celebration in Trapani Sicily (July 2021). I was invited by his daughter, Floria, and it was one of the highlights of my life. Thank you for posting this tribute.

Breathtaking, Vince! I loved the bit about the diminuendo being a gift of nature rather than the result of study. That will assuredly have the snobs reaching for their smelling salts. Hahahahaha!

Simply the best ever

I had the good fortune of visiting Giuseppe at his vacation house at Diani beach in Kenya, we would sit around his pool which was incorporated into the terrace & talk opera and local politics this was in the late 90's, he sang for me (with a very strong voice!)

So now Vince which one was the best? Or was it one the for each of their renditions that had particular strengths over the others delivery? .

"Pippo" di Stefano ruined early his voice by singing the wrong parts too early. I was together with my teacher Frannceso Carrino, who was also the teacher of Carlo Bergonzi, when Pippo phoned to him in Düsseldorf where Pippo gave a concert. Old Carrino sent him a high C through the phone. I was in this concert in the Rheinhalle in Düsseldorf. Pippo sung nearly everything transposed down. This is nearly 60 years ago. A few years later Pippo sung Rodolfo in Munich. Che gelida mania he sung also transposed down. I saw the notes on the music stands of the musicians via binocular.
