Currently upgrading my Atraxa deck and so many of these cards have showed up in my research! Love the deck tech and love your videos!

Just built these guys' deck the other day after getting them at prerelease. Super sweet and fun to play and I'm definitely going to get some inspiritaion for brewing with them from this video! :D

Great video Jumbo! Holy crud! These cards were spoiled just a few days ago and you already made this?! I gotta say Toothy is the cutest name I've ever seen on a Mtg card! After seeing all the valuable needed reprints spoiled the past two days and some of these new fun commanders, I'm very excited for this set! This feels like a Commander set like Dominaria! I hope Wizards keeps the valuable reprints coming! I might actually buy a box of this!

This is certainly a nice +1/+1 counter Simic deck - getting a Winding Constrictor as your commander is a strong ability for sure. Up until the end I thought "hm, this looks fun, but is it really better than other commanders for this theme?" ... then you suggested Darksteel Reactor and I was sold. There is something special about a little kid with his imaginary pet monster bringing a nuclear bomb to the party because he thinks it's hillarious.

I have an ezuri claw of progress deck already, I'm sticking these 2 in there as an alternate commander option :P as part of the 99, as long as you have 1, you'll get the second one. That's pretty good :P now I can't believe you forgot Jumbo Commander, (or maybe I missed it) but by far, the best win con in this deck is Sage of Hours. My playgroup got so annoyed at how easily and consistently I got the sage at 3 counters. So good :)

Nice Video Jumbo! Hope we get to see a deck tech on Virtus the Veiled and Gorm the Great next. Have been tinkering with it, but I'm not quite satisfied. Would love to see your perspective on them.

I'd like to bring up Helm of the Host for Toothy, every turn you get another Toothy that builds up it's own counters, then when one pops all the other Toothys get bigger! also, the Contagion weapons, Clasp is cheaper, but Engine would put 4 of any type of counter on Permanents you control with Pir out. That's a lot of counters!

Given the presence of Doubling Season, Pir, as well as the proliferate spells/abilities: would there be any value in including As Foretold into the deck?

Training Grounds, Gilder Bairn, Cryptolith Rite, Toothy, Laboratory Maniac and a flicker or sac outlet. GG guys

I think clone effects like spitting image are an auto include too. You clone Toothy once he gets massive, let the original die from the legend rule, then the new copy gets all the 1/1 counters off of you drawing all those cards similar to how the flicker effects would work. Plus you can recast spitting image over and over by discarding a land card and repaying the cost, which is stupid easy if you keep drawing cards. And if you have Pir or one of those cards out that give it extra counters each time it enters the battlefield, it just gets bigger and bigger each time. Maybe even altared ego, which lets you pump mana into it to get more 1/1 counters and then gets all the 1/1 counters from the original Toothy copy. God, I'm gonna love building this deck!

Hey guys, an important distinction here that Jumbo didn't make with regards to Planeswalkers & _Doubling Season_ effects ( no offence Jumbo, LYLT) - _Doubling Season_ and similar cards specify that if a counter would be added to a permanent you control as an *effect* of a spell or ability you control, instead you add double that amount. Activating a Planeswalker ability has a *cost* of +X or -X, which isn't an effect. The amount you add or subtract from a Planeswalker's loyalty as a result of paying these costs would be entirely unaffected by static effects from _Doubling Season_ and the like. However, proliferating abilities, and a couple of Planeswalker abilities such as _Gideon, Champion of Justice_ would double the number of counters put onto the permanent, and _Doubling Season_ does in fact double the number of counters with which the Planeswalker would enter the battlefield.

Something to clarify that wasn't mentioned in the video is that effects like pir and doubling season do not impact the amount of counters that are added when a pw ability is activated. It only impacts the amount they enter with and effects that manipulate the counters like proliferate

Great analysis. I like that you mentioned "flickering Toothy," but I'm not sure you spent enough time on just how powerful this is. I used to play a Simic "flicker deck" with Prime Speaker Zegana as commander with a bunch of blue and green ETB creatures, and the Maro creatures (P/T=cards in hand), which are all (except Psychosis Crawler) blue and or green. Anyway, a "flicker" spell like Ghostly Flicker could flicker Zegana and double my hand size if I had a Maro creature in play. I'd end up holding my entire deck and my creatures were easily 30/30+. I'd play a bunch of counter spells to protect my board once I had a huge hand. The two side-effects of the deck is that you need five or more cards in the 99 that give you no max hand size, and Zegana is seen as a threatening commander due to her potential size and card draw. So at one point I switched Zegana to the 99 and put Kruphix in as commander. This allowed me to rely on him and his indestructibility to give me no-max hand size, but required me to play tutors or "draw cards = to your largest power creature" cards to replace the accessibility of Zegana as commander. It played nearly the same but slightly better flying under the radar until too late for my opponents. Then Toothy and Pir dropped. I've just rebuilt the deck with the two of them as commanders. I no longer need the Maro creatures since Toothy doesn't care what my hand size is, and I need fewer "draw cards = to your largest creature's power" cards. I just need to flicker Toothy, and he draws me a bunch of cards and nearly doubles in size if Pir is in play. Play Conjurer's Closet and Deadeye Navigator of course. The early game is to set up with land ramp and getting the two commanders in play. They are not threatening at this stage, especially if your opponents have not played against the deck before. Once Toothy and Pir are in play, you just sit back and play defense. If a board wipe is played, counter it unless it is going to take out another problem. If Toothy is targeted with single target removal, you flicker him, draw more cards and double his size. You can put just a few win enablers in the deck to make sure you can seal the game. I play Laboratory Maniac, Thassa, Rogue's Passage, Time Warp, and Overwhelming Stampede (which turns Pir commander damage lethal too) cause you'll draw them after Toothy flickers a time or two. I still play a bunch of other ETB creatures, and Panharmonicon to take advantage of the flicker spells. Elvish Rejuvenator is my new favorite land ramper. I'm playing counter spells so Mystic Snake, Draining Whelk, and Torrential Gearhulk are no-brainers. I really love to Ghostly Flicker (or Displace or Illusionist’s Stratagem) Torrential Gearhulk and Toothy, to recast the flicker spell and do it a second time, maybe flickering another ETB creature the second time with Toothy again. I have the potential to Eternal Witness/Time Warp infinite turns combo too. I've also considered adding some Palinchron/Cloud of Faeries/Peregrine Drake infinite mana combos too (Thrasios), but I'm not sure this is needed. I play a few mana boosters like Zendikar Resurgent and Sasaya, Orochi Ascendant (which is super dumb) to lower the one limiting factor (mana). The deck is super fun to play, though not fun to play against (counter spells).

Is it just me, or is it weird that Pir is just a "Human" creature type? Like, not a "Human Rogue" or "Human Warrior"? I dunno, just seems odd.

What about explore? You get a 1/1 on toothy or the exploring creature no matter the outcome. Also how does the partner casting from the command zone work? Do I have to cast both at once? Where does the commander tax get applied if not?

Huh, I never noticed that Pir said counters on permanents, not just creatures. He definitely seems a lot better than I initially thought. I love the deck tech here with counters. I plan on brewing with these two in more of a voltron way with Toothy.

Will and Rowan next?? I was thinking about a superfriends/spells matter deck with a slight imphasis on stealing opponents spells after seeing the newly spoiled "Stolen Strategy" but I'm curious about what your take would be! ☺

btw don't forget the cards like sage of hours or magistate's septor that let you take extra turns

Can you have Toothy, Imaginary Friend by itself separate from Pir in another commander deck? I would like to make him my lieutenant in my Locust God deck.

I think Pir and lots of arcbound creatures with modular could be cool. Durable Handicraft, Lifecrafter's Gift, Rishkar, Peema Renegade, Verdurous Gearhulk, Song of Freyalise, and Darksteel Forge and some other stuff to really make the arcbounds worth it. Free counter moving is fun.

Pir and Toothy basically means you have Calvin and Hobbes in your command zone. Seems like a good enough reason to play them in my book.

If you had two forgotten ancients and an effect that would give you x2 counters or +1 counters could you essentially move them back and forth from one to the other and gain infinite counters? Or am I thinking of this wrong....

Don't forget the proliferate subtheme here - a simple contagion clasp can put an extra counter on ANYTHING, then it gets another from Pir, then it gets another from all the enchantments you have, and this is repeatable for four mana. Four mana for EASILY four +1/+1 counters on toothy, probably more, yeah I'll take that deal any day of the week. Don't forget that proliferate is a Simic theme so you can throw in a thrummingbird, inexorable tide, core prowler, and basically any other proliferates you want except for atraxa. Also, the value of contagion engine is insane in this deck. Pump everything you have by bajillions of counters, then do it again? Yes, please. My thought is, if you have a contagion clasp and a contagion engine on the battlefield, drop a planeswalker then use all that sweet mana that green has let you ramp into to instantly give it, like, thirty counters, then use its ultimate on the turn that it's dropped. Oh, and as if that wasn't enough, proliferate doesn't just target your board. You can play politics. somebody else has a planeswalker? Make an alliance. Somebody you don't like has a single -1/-1 counter on a creature? Kill it with status-based effects. Proliferate, hands down, needs to be in this deck.

Have a chasm skulker, make your toothy leave the battlefield, and double the counter with Pir. Oh yeah !

Are we sure that "Partner" and "Partner with" are the same thing? They have different reminder text. I wont be surprised if the Oracle text specifies that these "Partner with" cards do not allow you to have two commanders but instead specifically reference a teammate-player.

I haven't watched the video yet, but don't you think you should have waited till the rest of Battlebond has been spoiled to make this video? There might be some really good cards in the set that are like windmill slam-auto includes in this deck.

I just binged a lot of your videos and noticed a pretty common theme of not relying too heavily on your general, which is great advice but also sad. For that reason, I would love to watch you build with Squee, The Immortal, and do the opposite! Squee is so unique and is, as far as I'm aware, the only commander that you can consistently rely on, no matter what. I had a lot of fun building a Squee combo deck but I would love to see what you'd come up with, since I feel like I haven't uncovered all of his potential yet. Thank you for the great videos!
