Don't want to nit pick, but priming a cannon using a powder flask is an important safety breech when firing cannon. One spark or a bit of static electricity will turn it into a grenade in your hand...Those powder quills she mentioned are a much safer alternative. It's one of those things that aren't likely to happen, but no sense in tempting fate. You can't be too safe when firing black powder weapons. Overall, a really cool demo, enjoyed seeing all the weapons firing, esp. the blunderbuss and the cannon!
@cheap4x434
@cheap4x434 2 года назад
Also when she mentioned that in combat they might not wet swab the cannon is false it was a very important step to prevent the powder for the next shot igniting while you were loading the next ball
@mandowarrior123
@mandowarrior123 2 года назад
@@cheap4x434 that did happen a fair amount. What she stumbled over is they would skip the dry swab and the worming- if the cannon is hot enough it will evaporate the damp cloth water, but it will be enough to put our the embers. Sometimes all were skipped, water poured over the cannon to keep it cool... until it cracks open of course. Its just like british tankers sitting with a powder charge on their lap ready for the next shot- you aren't supposed to, but its a lot faster. When being second means you have a good chance of dying, even it blowing your hand off isn't so concerning. You have to clean the caked up bore after a few shots anyway though, depending on your windage and design of the firing mechanism. Also, you might start with several crew per cannon... If you think that's dangerous, try a furnace on a ship to get your cannon ball red hot- A 'hot shot' if you will. They weren't so popular- fire on a ship, hot balls that if dropped start a fire that can't be put out, they would mostly go off when the ball hit the powder, and, well, burned the prize.

Reminds me of the time I was crew on a local "character" ship and a local black powder club was aboard. The pieces they had were just a bit bigger and much louder. Nothing like the local USCG cutter firing salutes with her 5" guns but loud. They did a number of broadsides which was pretty cool and fast fire drills too. I remember the powder charges being wrapped in foil. Less chance of sparks in the barrel from smoldering powder bags. Lots of fun. The passengers were safely on the other side of the ship but I was on the firing side at my station just at the break of the poop so had a near perfect view. Fond memories.

They would've absolutely used nails in a blunderbuss. Originally they used polished stones. The way to prevent damage is to envelope the nails in a cloth wadding. Same way modern shotguns use plastic sabots and shot cups to increase accuracy and velocity while reducing wear.
@toddmetzger
@toddmetzger 2 года назад

@alanslater4206
@alanslater4206 2 года назад
@@toddmetzger It's a popular myth that nails, chains, etc etc were used frequently in Blunderbuss style weapons. This is because of the flaired muzzle and the idea it was like that so any old rubbish could be loaded into it. The real reason the muzzle of a blunderbuss was falired was to make it easier to load on a moiving coach as the guard or on horse back - think pouring salt into a 3/4 inch unsteady opening then think doing the same with a 3 inch funnel.
@cp1cupcake

@@alanslater4206 I think a lot of the "myth" comes from what happens when you run out of the stuff you are supposed to be shooting. Yes .... I was nervous from afar on how they were waving the weapons around and pointing aimlessly. Not good safety practice with weapons.
@toddmetzger
@toddmetzger 2 года назад
Exactly....flintlocks can go off half-cocked. There's a metal ridge and tab that is supposed to prevent this, but it can wear down the more the weapon is used. I was always told the flint hit the striker plate, not the pan. If your flint is hitting the pan, well you need to adjust your flint. The sparks will travel down the striker plate into the pan, igniting the primer powder, going through the hole setting off the main charge. Many riflemen carried a primer flask, with a finer powder than was used with the main charge. The finer powder was easier to ignite with the sparks. You could also keep the powder in the flask from getting as damp, as say your prepared paper charges. Those would get more wet every time you grabbed a new one.
