This era of baseball with more contact hitters is SO MUCH more exciting than today's version.

One reason for more contact then was that there were far less guys who threw 93-94 mph which is average fastball today.

8/31/1979 until 31:59.....then Game 2 from 9/1/1979. Interesting that the Pirates wore the same uniform combo in both games of that double header. Game 1 was the famous game where Kent Tekulve played left field. According to Tekulve that game was not televised, and the footage was captured "...by a local SF TV crew".
@jamesdye8473
@jamesdye8473 4 года назад
The Tekulve catch was televised as I remember seeing it live on KDKA 2. Tanner brought Grant Jackson in to face Darrel Evans and he hit it right to Tekulve in left field. The telecast came on when the first game of the doubleheader was in the 8th inning if I recall. Good times

Gee, I remember the literal battles between the Pirates and Phillies in the 70's and early 80's. The biggest shame of the 70's was the Pirates not getting their due, for they had, in my opinion, every bit the success as the Big Red Machine.

What a treat, to watch baseball when it was in my opinion BASEBALL! I don't watch, in my opinion the slop product today they created, to me that's not baseball. Just my opinion, the game I grew up watching,playing, loving is gone! No stradigy, no hit and run,no base stealing, today it's launch angles, home runs, strikeouts, bat flips, shifts, analylitics, phoney stats, juiced balls, small ballparks, liberal charitable official scoring, it's un watchable, atrocious! Keep up the good work posting these games, they are treasure's of when baseball was AMERICA'S GAME, the national pastime

Funny that today's starting pitchers can't pitch a complete game to save their lives, let alone get through 6 measly innings, and then many have to get Tommy John Surgery... but from the 1970's all the way back to the beginning of the sport in the 1870's pitchers routinely had 20 or 30 complete games in a season. Heck, Satchell Paige has been credited with pitching complete double-header games in one day. Look at baseball-reference.com stats of all the old pitchers, even the worst of them, many had easily HUNDREDS of complete games. Look at guys who won over 200 games and see how many complete games they pitched - Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins, Gaylord Perry, Robin Roberts, Juan Marichal, Tom Seaver, Warren Spahn, Steve Carlton, Walter Johnson, Carl Hubbel, Catfish Hunter, Bob Feller, Nolan Ryan, Dizzy Dean, etc - Even the worst pitchers stil had 15 or more complete games in a season every year. Even the great Babe Ruth had 107 complete games as a pitcher, before he even became an everyday outfielder. Babe Ruth had 35 complete games as a starting pitcher in 1917 alone! and then played many more years as an outfielder, and never needed any arm surgeries! Something is truly out of whack with modern baseball's physical conditioning.

@@albrownfromtheothersideoft3115 I agree. Pitchers should be expected to throw complete games, on less than 110 pitches. Also, if I were an umpire, I would warn both teams: "Batters are NOT getting time-out, just so they can step out of the box and fidget. STAY IN THE BOX, or I'll CALL A STRIKE." Above all, teams should go back to wearing knickers, with those colored stirrups.

@SuperLandho
@SuperLandho 3 месяца назад
Milo Hamilton did Pirate Baseball from 1976-1979. Milo did the Cubs broadcasts from 1980 to 1984. He was supposed to be the #1 announcer for the Cubs once Jack Brickhouse retired after the '81 season. However, the Cubs ownership paper company decided to bring in Harry Caray under Hamilton's nose in 1982 which really peeved Hamilton to no end because of their prior negative experiences from over 20 years before. In 1985 Hamilton then did the Astro's play calling from then on in...

Dave Parker had the most massive crotch sweat of any athlete in history, with the exception of Leon Lett perhaps. Every game the Cobra had a sweat patch from the crotch to half-way down one or both legs. And you KNOW whoever cleaned those uniforms was dying every time from the funky smell.
