In Dead Man's Chest, Liar's Dice is the game played by the crew of the Flying Dutchman. Played by the lost souls serving on Davy Jones' crew, it is a game of deception and that the bet includes all the dice, not just one's own. While on the Dutchman, Will Turner learns how the game is played before challenging Davy Jones at a game of Liar's Dice, the purpose of which was to find out where Jones hides the key to the Dead Man's Chest.

I love the subtle details of this scene. 1. Davy Jones using black dice. 2. That little snort Davy Jones does when talking about women. 3. How Davy Jones stutters on the word "married." 4. It's been mentioned, but Davy Jones stating Will's fate is to be married to the ship is excellent foreshadowing. 5. Davy Jones knocking his pipe on his claw to simulate clapping. 6. How Will's father's expression changes from happiness to worry upon Will asking for another game. 7. How Davy Jones sounds human, almost afraid, when saying, "How do you know of the key?"
@lipeesch

Yeah, about the change of his voice…I think that was Davy’s real voice, the same thing happened again when he visited Calypso in the Black Pearl the next movie. @@Zergul_Zai It’s not a physical thing. You can’t open a person up and point to a “soul/consciousness” part, not in the brain either. Some say it’s a collective effort of the whole body, but I think that’s still not taking into account non-physical factors. There’s so much going on in the Universe at all times, and we often mistake material reality for the only thing that is. I believe that the soul is this immaterial thing that influences the body and pushes it to live; collapse neural functions in the brain, pump blood and oxygen, etc. It is the very essence of life. Emotions, will, identity, all are mere parts of it. That’s not even touching on it’s connection to other souls. Maybe each soul makes up one ginormous consciousness. The collective consciousness. I don’t know for sure, I can only see the influences of the soul, not the soul itself. But faith is the assurance of things unseen and I don’t believe the soul is of physical material.

I think my favorite part is when Davy Jones says "well done, Master Turner", and knocks the ashes from his pipe like a polite golf-clap. As theatrical as Jones is, it's fascinating to see him lose so gracefully. He doesn't even try to cheat or go back on his wager. It really shows how confident Davy Jones is about his position as the ferryman of the dead- sure, he lost one of his crew, but someone will fill in the gap eventually. From a writer’s/narrative perspective, it makes sense. The assumption is that the majority of the audience hasn’t played the game and don’t know the rules, which is true. So watching the first game would be rather confusing, but the movie trods along anyways, expecting you to have understood the stakes. You understood the outcome based off dialogue, but that’s all that’s understood. And then you’re putting the audience through a second round of a game they don’t understand and expect them to either have already understood or hope they will the second time. That’s fundamentally frustrating. It’d definitely had lead to unanimous “It was a dumb scene” remarks, and you don’t want that as a movie maker. [EDIT] that feeling is avoided now because we can just look up the game’s meaning after the fact. But it’s not avoided during first viewing unless you already know the game. So, cutting back on the potential confusion was the move to make.

*Rules* 1: Each player has 5 dice 2: Each round begins by the players shaking their dice inside opaque cups and putting them head down on the table 3: Each player look at their dice without showing them to the rest (you can do this at any point in the game) 4: The first player has to try and guess how many dices of a certain type are in total *including the dice from the other players* 5: The next player has to either augment the "amount" of dice from the previous bid, or augment the "number of" the dice bidded on. -For example if the first player calls for Three 4´s. The next player can say either *Four 4´s* or *Three 5´s* -You don´t have to necessarily augment the values by only one. You could very well call for Seven 4´s on your turn and that´s fine. 6: If at any point the next player doubts there are as many dice of the amount called from the previous player he can call the previous player a Liar. 7: Once someone has been called a Liar all cups go up and you count the dice to see if they match OR EXCEED the bid from the player who was called a Liar. -If the dice on the table match or exceed that last bid the player who called Liar loses -If there arent enough dice to match the bid then the player who made the last bid loses. 8: Next round. Player who won begins this time ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Optional Rules: (because there weren´t enough already) 1: 1´s are wild meaning they count for any value to all players. 2: You can half the amount of dice bidded on by turning them into 1´s -Meaning if the last player called for *Nine 6´s* you can then call for *Five 1´s* (halving the amount) -The next player if he wants to turn the 1´s into any other number has to double them. (So from Five 1´s you´d have to go to *Ten 2´s* for example) 3: Each time a player loses a round the lose a dice 4: You can sometimes call for an open hand round. Meaning each player shows their dice to the rest but can´t see their own That one wil fuck you up 5: You can "Call" the last players bid. So basically you can agree to whatever the last player before you said and if he was right you win. If he was wrong you lose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can bet money, shots, sips, your soul, your car, your house, your children´s college fund, your hopes and dreams or just play for fun but honestly who does that

Its a game of "poker face". Put your dice down, peak, and call. Lets say I put down the dices, I take a peak, and say "three twos". In reality there only two twos. My opponent will declare if I am a liar. If he says "liar!" He or she wins.
@Governor2310
@Governor2310 5 лет назад
It's basically you saying how many dies you think are in the cups on the table, including your opponents. The aim is for someone to be called a liar, if they lie and you call them a liar you win. If they don't lie and you call them a liar they win.
@LordKnightcon
@LordKnightcon 4 года назад
Additionally, the values called can only ever go up. On each call you can increase the number of dice or the value of dice or both by however much you want, so long as something is larger than the last call. So if someone starts with "three twos", the smallest you can say is either "four twos" or "three threes." Or you can go to "three fours" or "five sixes" and so on. The higher both values get the riskier the bet. And finally a one is wild and counts as whatever the current stake is. So if you call four fives when you have three fives and a one showing, there are four fives. If someone calls four sixes that one is now a six.
@Eric4bz
@Eric4bz 4 года назад
For the record Knightcon, the value of the dice CAN go down. You can go from calling three fives to calling four twos. The number of the dice cannot go down though. So if someone bids 'three twos' then your smallest bid is 'three threes'. It's more viable that there's a small amount of dice with a specific value, vs a large amount of dice. You can see how in the second game that Bill bets "Three twos" to start, then Davey bids "Four Fours," for Bill to go to "Six Threes". An example of the quantity of dice going up, but the value of the dice can go down.

I think this scene adds a lot and it's a shame it was cut. If they wanted to cut runtime, they should've shortened the cannibal island gauntlet by a few minutes. This scene is narratively incredible. First, Will offering a smaller wager (though still a big one) first is a great way of ramping up the stakes and tension. Then during the first game, Jones and Will both get amazing character moments; we see just how bitter Jones is, but he's not evil for the sake of it. He is snarky and his words ooze cunning, but he's not bad-mannered in conversation. Will on the other hand is shown as hopeful and unwavering in the face of a man (squid?) who has given in to despair. The again, Bootstrap Bill joining in on the second game only serves to make his sacrifice worth more. He had JUST got his freedom through Will's cunning and luck, yet when Will is prepared to throw himself in the fire, Bill doesn't even hesitate to jump in and damn himself once again to save his son. An already impactful moment turned downright tragically heroic by the added context. Finally, winning the first bet showed us that Jones will honor a wager, even if it hurts him. He clearly doesn't like letting go of Bootstrap, but was perfectly willing to. This ups the stakes for the second game, where we now know he won't simply back down from a wager, so the bet on the key is even more tense because we know he won't just say "Nah fam I'm good" if Will wins.

This scene is fantastic. Movies nowadays don't seem to be capable of this anymore.

This scene is so much better than the trimmed version in the movie. It's a shame it didn't make it. Also that sound Davy Jones made at Bootstrap Bill when returning for the second game gives me life

At first, I was like: "Really... betting your father's freedom... that's both cruel and borderline villain", but seeing how he manages to pull a unlikely win and double the stakes, that was really tense and attention-pulling. We even get to see Davy Jones baffled by the unexpected challenge and what was at stake for him. Amazing scene, they should have included this one in instead.

He didn't bet *on* his fathers freedom, he bet *for* his fathers freedom. He bet *on* his own 100 years service. If he lost, he owes the Dutchman 100 years of his own service (his father also remains at service, however nothing extra happens to him). If he wins, he wins freedom for his father. His bet wasn't really at the expense of his father but at the expense of himself. By the second game, his father is technically a free man no matter what happens, however he ends up joining in and betting his own eternity of service, basically nullifying the first game completely.

This is better then the original. The original was to short and to tell the truth I never understood the concept of the game. This moment gives a lot more to the relationship between will and his father, the rules of the game shown more, and how scary Davy Jones is by playing mind games with Will and still being cool headed even when losing

3:20 I am so sorry if I can't help myself in laughing at this scene. 😂😂😂 Like I'm aware that with a face like that and position he is in, Davy Jones truly is a man to be feared on. But the way he was able to scare Bootstrap Bill Turner away with a snort, imitating a Pig (Oooohhh Scary), I just couldn't😂😂😂

The actor who plays Davy Jones does a really good job. Just the way he changes his tone is phenomenal.

The scene is less emotional, but the ""fate" dialogue is a fkn 10, Davy Johnes looks more of a cold-blodied badass and game makes more sence.

God damn it dude. Why can’t all movies be this good?! Edit: Well I suppose if they were, this wouldn’t be good would it?

There needs to be a collector's edition of the movie with this scene added back in. It's excellent stuff.

This movie is still one of the most visually amazing even years later and I will always love the nautical designs they went with for Davy Jones and his crew.

A good comeback to "You can't best the Devil twice." would've been something along the lines of, "You're not the Devil, Jones. You're just one of his slaves."

I wish they would’ve kept this scene. The foreshadowing in this scene would’ve made such a huge impact on the ending. The parallelism in the dialogue is unreal! Good writing at its finest.

I love the animated expressions on the two crewmates behind Will, Quittance and Oglivey. It's like their faces fall when Will whips out the drawing of the key and they look at him instead of Jones.

Ah, I remember how I introduced my friends to this game last summer. They all knew it because of this scene, but only I knew the rules, as I loved the movie so much I decided to learn the game on my own. So one day I brought the box at the bathhouse where we hang out and decided to start playing. One of the best and worst ideas I ever had. So many friendships on the verge of breaking, but so much fun at the same time! They loved it so much that a girl in our group bought her own set and started playing it with her husband. I honestly can't wait to see them again and start all over

if only they kept this scene. it adds a sense of dark humor to jones instead of a fully serious and heartless philosopher. still a good character though

There's so many tiny details in Jones' body language that aren't drawn attention to but add so much to his character. the way his tentacle fingers curl around the cup, the snort of smoke out of his 'side vent' mouth, all of it makes him look so alien yet somehow feels so weirdly human.
