Despite your advice people will still ask for a Halo Sword. And it appears the Portal Gun is the new Hidden Blade. Awesome build. Simplicity turned into a really good look. It actually finishes in the realm of beyond good enough. Great job BFX team.

I have made several foam swords for stage shows and for training weapons, and this is an awesome looking sword! Not for kids, but good for stage or film for sure.

Wow, I must admit that this prop is awsome. Plus, as You mentioned, you can do any swords using this technique. Add some costumes and here's everything you need to make for ex. a medieval-style movie. Cheers, Zack!

Safety tip: if this prop sees heavy use, be sure to check the blade foam between takes. If it peels away, the aluminum strip will become exposed and could cause a bit of pain.

When using craft foam it's often a good idea to seal it with a few layers of modpodge and water, other wise the foam will tend to absorb a lot of the paint.

just a little tip, round the edges that are within the blade. stops the foam from tearing

thank you for using those foam mats in the gun build last month; it inspired me to use it for a cosplay prop I had been struggling with, and it turned out fantastically! Thank you, indymogul, for consistently giving us inspiration.

Nice one! We are already filming a short movie that will include sword fights... but we're using real ones (like the ones in "Braveheart"). All of the actors belong to a fencing club, so there will be no problem. I hope...

What I thought of the video Zack Finfrock was that it was not my captian america shield i wanted. Still incredible well done, good balance of humor and actual building. More funny is my only critique

Two things: 1) This build is quite awesome, but Zack you should have mentioned dulling down the tip of the metal so it doesn't poke through the foam and hurt someone. 2) Please make a Portal Gun. We are ALL aware that yes, there was one in a Your FX a long time ago, but that just did not look authentic and was a bit clumsy. If you could make one to accurate scale that maybe lights up, we'd love that! A level 10 build is no problem because you are awesome at walking us through the steps! =)

this sword looks freaking awesome!

kind of as a follow-up to this build, you could show how to make a pirate-ship set. like a greenscreen and a wood "floor." then have a steering-wheel, some rope thing, and a ledge of the boat. all of which can be moved about to make different shots. i think i did a really bad job of explaining that, but you get what i mean.

at first i was like that looks like crap but the more i watched this video i say that this is a very cretive prop. keep up the good work zach

Bunnings or any major Warehouse store, it generally comes in 3' by 3' size and Charcoal is a good base colour. at about $30 for 4 sheets. Hope this helps

niceee i actually just did this build for a skyrim in real life vid we're doing and if i could just make one suggestion... This build was great, but in stead of using foam and a metal rod i used a side of a wooden door frame. it's already in the sword shape and size and since its wood its super easy to cut and spray paint. Other than that it was a really nice DIY thanks!

@lastdollarfilms I'm talking about one that looks like the actual joker gun like in the comics or in the movie. The ones they sell online, the barrel opens up and the flag pops out. in the joker's gun, the flag pops out of the barrel, plus it looks like an actual revolver.

Someday I might use this method for elucidator and dark repulser (if u know what anime show it's from [sword art online])

I painted up a Nurf sword for a halloween prop once. I used electrical tape arond the hilt and painted it brown to give it a leather look.

wood would also work instead of aluminum. i just got a bunch of yard sticks for $1 at the hardware store. they are thicker so the sword isn't going to look as good but for those who just need really cheap props it works...

That "cap-piece" is called a pommel. Overall the thing doesn't look to bad, it has kind of a LARP thing going but for close-ups, just get a real cutlass somewhere, you won't get one for 30$ but I bet there are some cheap decorative swords to be found online. As a matter of fact, you may get one for about 60 - 70€ so if you shop around, you'll get a cheap one that looks good enough.

Since you did war movie month you should do a Halo month! One of them should be a Spartan Laser (coolest weapon). I know you like Halo I've seen the Reach arm band.

@Imthewbestintheworld I already do, the blades you buy are not sharpened, there for sparing, you can also buy foam ones for 10 bucks that look realistic

so the pirate gun was beast but personally i would really like the build of captain malcolm reynolds gun from the hit show firefly...please

Nice job. I'm curious how durable it is... if you're just using glue, then it seems like after a couple of good whacks the metal would push apart the seam on the "edge" side. Still, an awesome prop. I got to get me a dremel.

Has there been a tutorial for transformation scenes yet? Could be either a monster styled transformation or a Super Sentai Style transformation...

@GrayStudios Actually the foam is all that needs to be cut to the right shape. The core does not really matter.

@LegoHaloSPARTAN722 The Indy Mogul channel. Actually, if you want a direct link to the episode I was mentioning, go to 4:50 on the video. The guy who made it was actually working on a "Portal" web-series, which was loosely based off the game. It's the closest you can get on a low budget. If you were spending more than $200, had some electronics skills and the time to do it, maybe you can do a replica Portal gun like Volpin, who constructed a screen-accurate replica of it.

You guys should make a costume that looks liek the gatherers from Amnesia: the Dark Descent. Those are so freaking scary, I mean, They had their hands cut off and replaced with swords, they used to be human, but due to them being give poisoned wine, their bodies are grotesque and deformed, but they're still humanoid. I think the scariest part is their faces. Ugh, they're so creepy i can't even describe it.

Theoretically, you could apply the same concept and make a katana right?

personally i would have had more real metal on the exterior because it still looks kinda foamish. i know the seller of the effect is the sound and quick cuts, but still, why not sandwich a foam blade between two pieces of metal so it's still blunt but looks even better?

@KyleTheAssassin1 He teachs the skills to make what you want. The amount of detail you add is up to you. If he made everything a level 6 build or better the kids that keep this show going with veiws would not be able to make the builds.
