Pitbulls as K9s in the US Military - Kenny Licklider Episode 118

PItbulls are one of the most controversial breed of dog. They polarize people: some LOVE them - some HATE them! I thought it would be a great idea to talk to someone who would seem somewhat neutral and get some more info on the breed.
Kenny Licklider has trained so many dogs to the highest level including those for the US Military. So, the question is: "Can pitbulls be used for military k9 work?" The surprising answer is in this video.
PitBulls can be really amazing dogs and when you hear the stories from Ken, you will agree. It takes a special person to own them, train them and live with them, but when you find that match, you will be astounded!

I have had eight Pit Bull and pit mix dogs in my 42 years. I have three currently and an Aussie. I have used them as bird dogs and they are great! Every one of them has more hunt in them than I could ever use. They learn quickly and love to work! They also love being handled: picked up, cramped spaces, awkward situations are no problem. Other breeds have to be trained to handle this far more. The pit’s just don’t have the same personal space requirements that other dogs like my Aussie have. My pit’s always sleep in a big pile and have to be close to me. The Aussie sleeps by herself and doesn’t like to be crowded by anyone including my kids. The pits are vastly superior family dogs. I love my Aussie and she is very smart but not an ideal pet for most people. I have a job for her so she’s good but it would be a shame to keep her as just a house pet. Pits on the other hand are good even if you don’t have anything for them to do but hang out with you.

The idea of pitbulls being working dogs is severely understated. Every one I've owned, worked with and seen, is through and through a working dog. I say this constantly. They are tons of work and by work I mean you have to work them if you want slightest chance of a peaceful life and a balanced happy doggo. Note not talking bullies and other large "form" of pitbull, I dont know anything about those, I'm talking Apbt's.

LOVE the practice of identifying the alpha in a litter and then removing that dog to allow another to move into the alpha role! This is an example of how creative thinking can override conventional thought. We have believed for so long that the dominance or submissiveness of the dog is contingent on the inherent character of the dog…in other words, you are what you are born with, but this is a true example of how nurture can supersede nature through a wise manipulation of the conditions in which a puppy is raised. As a coach, writer, and apprentice dog trainer with my obedience club, I often observed the correlation between what we teach our dogs and what our dogs teach us. The wise trainer will get it…you may not consider yourself an “alpha” trainer at this point, but when you step into a role that pushes you to become better…when you encounter a dog that challenges your skills…this is your opportunity to become the alpha. Cool idea! Thanks, Robert and Kenny, for sharing your wonderful thoughts.

@@ericbest9562 thinking you might be talking about these ill bred pieces of garbage that are actually "bully breeds" and you're right they're not ABPT's and people who don't know any better and uneducated about the breed wish to refer to them as Pit Bulls. You can even tell the difference between an American Staffordshire terrior if you know Pit Bulls well enough. I haven't had anything but APBT's since 96 and my hubby has had them since 88-89. His very first was a Carver X Going light blood and my first one was a Sorrell X Plumbers Alligator cross. Mine was ADBA registered as well. My girl who passed a couple of years ago was double registered. Don't have the certificate because you have to send it back in but still have how she was bred. Had a pure Hall's dog we picked up from the man himself and granted our boys are almost 11 they're Bolio x Jeep bloodline and their Dad solid Bolio. Otherwise our dogs if they were still alive were grandsons to Hall's Carlos and Frisco and although we didn't breed them the friend who did got their Dad straight from Bobby and his female came straight from Garners yard as well. I can't remember if it was a hundred years ago for sure but the Amstaffs were the accepted breed in England and the APBT from Ireland. Could the two breeds have been crossed way back then and maybe looked different I'm sure that's a really good possibility. Look up Black Satan owned by Captain Jack Barret from the early 1900s. He looks just like many well bred ABPT'S of today.

Prey drive, outstanding, food driven, outstanding and tenacity is second to none. I currently have a bull mastiff that uses his nose for EVERYTHING. His tracking ability is fantastic. He’s absolutely driven when it comes to food and toys (prey drive) is beyond what I expected from this breed. I thought the brachycephalic would be a hindrance for tracking or search, I was wrong!

Great video! Fascinating topic with two passionate individuals. Pitbull is the abbreviated term for the American Pitbull Terrier, a breed recognized by the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA) and the United Kennel Club (UKC). These dogs have pedigrees that can be traced back to ancestors imported from the British Isles. The Pitbull breed has a rich history with well-established bloodlines, and breeders have conducted significant genetic selection to maintain its traits. It is worth noting that the dogs found in shelters are not purebred APBTs but rather "Bull-type" of dogs.

@hmtmth8481
@hmtmth8481 11 месяцев назад
@@WDLC1911 The word "Pitbull" has a relatively straightforward etymology, consisting of two parts: "pit" and "bull." "Pit" refers to an arena or a pit specifically used for animal fights, particularly dog fights, where these contests were once organized. "Bull" simply means "bull," and in the context of the word "Pitbull," it alludes to bull baiting, a blood sport that originated in England during the medieval period, gaining popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries. This cruel practice involved setting dogs, often bulldogs or similar breeds, upon a tethered bull, typically a large and powerful one. The objective of bull baiting was for the dogs to attack the bull, latching onto its nose, horns, or neck and not letting go, while the bull tried to defend itself by tossing and goring the dogs with its horns or trampling them. Dogs used for bull baiting were selectively chosen for their strength, tenacity, courage, powerful jaws, high pain tolerance, aggressiveness, and determination. These traits enabled them to engage effectively in this brutal and inhumane blood sport.
@hmtmth8481
@hmtmth8481 11 месяцев назад
@@GrCHBoomerang Did I ever state that the "American Pitbull Terrier "was created for "Bull Baiting"? I only provided the historical context behind the term "Pitbull." This term describes a function, the job that men of that era assigned to these dogs: to seize the bull and immobilize it by its snout, ear, or other facial parts. This historical context is behind the term "Bull." Then, the term "Pit" refers to a designated area or arena where animals are placed against each other for entertainment or gambling purposes. The word "American" refers to the United States, where Bull-and-Terrier-type dogs from the British Isles (most notably those from the Black Country, Staffordshire County, England) were drastically selected, refined for combat, possessing "Gameness." From this rigorous selection, truly American lineages emerged. The word "Terrier" refers to small terriers (chest < 35 cm/14in) hunting foxes and badgers in their burrows. The selected dogs were those unafraid of darkness, temperature variations, tight spaces, with a keen sense of smell, having the tenacity to face fox and badger attacks, capable of staying underground for several days, able to finish/kill their prey underground if it refused to come out. Therefore, the term "Terrier" refers to this family of working dogs and their resilient and courageous temperament. In the early 1800s, bulldogs and terriers were crossed, laying the foundation for popular dog breeds today: the Amstaff, APBT, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and the English Bull Terrier. Following the prohibition of Bull-Baiting, fights continued but only between medium-sized dogs resulting from the bulldog-terrier cross, which were easy to hide and matches were easily held in small hidden places. To summarize, "American" for the United States and a distinct American selection from Irish-English stock, "Pit" for the combat arena, the act of placing one animal against another to watch them fight, "Bull" referring to Bull-Baiting and bull-and-bear fighting dogs, and "Terrier" referring to dogs hunting underground displaying unwavering determination to accomplish their task despite challenges.

Well, this bully line has been bred to be aggressive so they have that wiring in them. Then, they are trained to be aggressive so double whammy. They are dangerous because of this and the way they fight other dogs and maul humans compared to other breeds. Of course, there are outliers, especially the ones picked to as baits due to their more mellow personalities.

This was so refreshing to hear probably the best discussion about dogs & respecting other dog trainers instead of all this rivalry. I have always said the most dangerous abuse is someones hands so it's not the tools or methods it's how these tools are used. I've never used tools or crates but that doesn't mean I'm against either. Different methods work for different dogs in different circumstances. Sadly whenever anyone simply says I do or don't use this or that way, all too often such comments get attacked by others including some dog trainers 😕 Dog owners, trainers, professional & non professional should all watch this adult healthy conversation to learn exactly what everyone should be doing in the dog world...respecting eachother, listening to eachother, learning from eachother & enjoying sharing eachothers experiences & opinions. What a great place it would be if more people were like this instead of the my way or no way & tearing people down simply for using a different method that works for them. You two are amazing role models for the dog community worldwide. This was the best & loveliest discussion I've watched. Thank you from the UK. You are both amazing.❤

The thing I love about dogs and man, we have an unspoken contract. You provide food, shelter, care for the dog. The dog does various services, tasks. The interesting thing, the dog comes up on the food chain to your level. Unless you are a heartless PoS that abandons them at the first issue or Chinese person who beats them to death with a stick prior to eating them. Also, heads up if you have an old dog, @ age 10 standard years, a dog has a 50% chance of developing cancer/ tumors. Avoid sugar/excess carbs as it will directly feed cancer/tumors. Keto can help shrink cancer/ tumors.

I started with what I knew from past experience. But I just couldn't stop the lunging. I ran out of tools. I had to try the prong. Thankfully there are trainers out there that have the balls to take the heat from these whiny, baseless, opinionated "trainers" and put the information that's needed out there. It's messed up when people can hide behind a keyboard. Once I had reported to FB that someone said "if you believe in prongs so much, you should put one on you autistic son" I said. "Thank for the advice but fortunately my son can't be pit down for biting someone" FB refused to do anything. 6.11. 24 will be 2yrs since #journeythepoundpuppy was sprung. Then i train by giving or withholding affection. Good work equals scratches and belly rubs. Well bred and trained Pitties are one of the best all round breeds to work with, they are smart, fast super athletic and eager to learn, people think the lock jaw is a problem if the dogs are used by the police or military but they very rarely lock on and they can be trained to not do it. I have owned Rotties, a Belgium sheppard and a Cane Corso and they have all been awesome dogs but the best all round dog I have ever owned is my current companion who is a Pitbull, this dog's genes are perfect his natural physique is amazing and he learnt faster than any other breed I have trained, he is perfect around people and kids and can switch from casual and loving to all business in a flash, one thing I have learned about the breed is they are very emotional with people and they need to be around people but when you take that away from them they can become aggressive its the only negative trait they have and I think its the reason we hear stories of them just turning all of a sudden.

I have had 5 GSD'S which all were rescues and all excellent dogs. Sad to say at 56 yrs old l have my first puppy. She kept me busy. But now, 2 yrs later l have another fabulous dog! My pitbull was the best dog breed i ever had despite furniture and carpet getting destroyed when he was teething when he was young, he was the best being i could ask for no doubt. He listened, followed me everywhere, protected me from adrenaline cops one time, and he always was loving to me, ive had a bunch of different types of animals and etc, pitbulls seemed to be the best, even when your at your lowest and have a one its like they know, their really a human intimate dog outta all of the breeds, pitbull would rather spend time with you then with any other, they rather give their life for you to not be hurt, they want to do whatever you want to do whatever it is, they truly our humans best friend if you teach as a kid like kid is homeschooled like i did, you may have a good one like i did who i could walk with out a leash aroumd anything anywhere without provocation coming from my pit, i miss mine, wish i made more videos for i barley have any, i have more pics in triple digits tho. Miss him, fyi i bought mine for 50bucks and he was 4weeks old when i had bought him, feed him with bottle for a week an half to after that like a baby it was really cute.😢 oh Champ i miss

I did not know they were used like this. I have an APBT/Catahoula mix we adopted from our local shelter. He was unsocialized, had been abused, and needed a break. He started out in the shelter as a pup and ended up there again as a damaged adult. He needed a break. It was a tough road for him and I have a bite scar from him, but he became an excellent dog. He's a 75lb fur missile and fearless guardian of our home. I truly believe this dog would have to be killed to get past him. He will not let anyone get between him and his family. He good with other dogs when we are out, but anything that enters the back yard dies. He runs toward potential threats. He has also chased off coyotes, raccoons, and a bobcat. He is also really scent driven. If I got him as a puppy, I would have liked to train him as a SAR dog. He absolutely loves to track and find and has a high work drive. I've always thought Cooper was an awesome dog with a lot of wasted potential, but I never knew they could become a MWD.

So he got trained as a military dog. He was just totally AWESOME, two enlistment, two marriages, four cross country moves, saved so many family members; his judgment was always better than mein. He worked, he hunted(squirrel), and played hard. I have had many since, More adventures than I could tell in a week. My big prejudice: is with Pit-mix, Or kenneled/boxed dogs. Pits require people time, lots of people time. By the by, For me, there is no other breed, American Pit Bull Terrier, forever !!!

He is all bluff and no bite towards people but he alerts and guards against hawks, coyotes, bobcats etc. his arch nemesis is the owl lol. He even ran off a bear once. Won’t bother livestock, protects chickens like you wouldnt believe. He’s the most focused driven dog I’ve ever had. Best rat hunter ever. He’s not a dog anyone can handle, but he’s obedient to a fault with the people he trusts. Hands down best dog I’ve ever had. They’re not all fantastic tho, it’s a genetic lottery with mixes and the owner also plays a large part as well. Bully mixes are not all for everyone. Would I get another? 100%

Have known a lot of amazing ones, and always thought a lot of them have the potential to do a lot more than most people might think. But they just end up in the wrong hands SO often. And I don't even mean just the outright abusive hands, but just overall dog-ignorant, irresponsible, 'my baby would never do that!' types that have no business having ANY dog, let alone one as powerful and driven as a lot of pit bulls can be under those big blocky adorable faces.
