I miss the corn bread box in the background ... great video, like all of them. I had to laugh at the long toss section-not for your synopsis but reminded me of a story from a friend. A neighborhood friend of mine claims to be why his younger brother was successful in baseball (the younger brother went on to pitch 8 years with the AAA Yankees). They grew up in Iowa-keep in mind "back then:" they didn't have all the knowledge/techonolody we have today nor did they have weighted balls. That younger brother was told to "go catch fly balls and throw 'em back in." He basically grew up doing long toss.

I think long toss is crucial for implementing athletic mechanics... which will create great movement patterns for the pitcher

I dont necessarily disagree, but i also don't really think there's evidence that pitchers who long toss are better than those that don't - I think your opinion is common, but mostly just an anecdote. Again, I mostly agree but recognize that I don't think its much beyond just my own personal opinion also

@@DanBlewett there is, however, evidence that for a given age and throwing distance, at a certain point in “long toss” that: 1. mechanics significantly change away from what is considered sound from a pitching perspective. 2. Induces significantly higher elbow torques. So...perhaps long toss, at some distance, actually de-trains pitching specific mechanics and increases risk of injury across time. I think time is better spent, for youth players (10-18) increasing gross strength and working to increase velo through the lower half.

I'm actually developing a short toss plan...loaded with super agressive wrist flips, and firing the ball at your partner from 25 feet away.... may also incorporate some form of "pepper" into it to see live at bats!!

thx 4 this tips!! i think i need to be more muscular to improve my velo, it's getting hard to gain velo working on my mechanics, and people with mechanics worse than mine throw only a bit slower. and i think it will help with my command. I HOPE SO. lol thx 4 ur videos Dan! u r awesome! i am scared to throw too far on long toss and hurt my arms.

thanks for watching - just work hard and be consistent in your training and throwing. People get hurt a lot faster/more often when they try to rush it the process.

I long toss with youth players 10-12 yo. We build up to 90 to 110 ft maybe a little further for about 10 throws.

@@DanBlewett well I stated that wrong after reading what i said...in my case I promise it did...It probably more correlates in the way of gaining weight and strength. In most cases long toss adds velo but it some cases it doesn’t. After reading what I said I can’t promise it to add velo but from my experiences and seeing my teammates experiences it most of the time does.

I'm very interested in how muscle affects pitching velocity. It seems hard to believe adding muscle wouldn't make someone better, but if it did it would absolutely make sense for even Chris Sale to add muscle. It reminds me of boxing. Muscles will slow you down in boxing, but I think the benefit comes from having a larger mass. So I think maybe you have to optimize the amount of muscle that will give you more mass to generate power, but not too much that slows your arm from having to move a larger weight. I'm just guessing, there should be some scientific literature on this but it makes no sense. And of course you're right about diminishing returns after a certain point, but I still wish the baseball world made it more clear about what is ideal.

weird coincidence - I filmed a video about this, though not as much from a scientific standpoint, more of my experience and what young pitchers should think about re: muscle mass and size

The question I keep asking myself is: Is long toss beneficial to stimulate the arm in a different way? I equate this to going to the gym and doing the same exercises over & over. It doesn't make sense to me. What does make sense is doing different exercises on the same muscle group for growth & development. Instead of consistently throwing, for example, 60-120 feet, long toss, done properly, will aid in stretching out the arm and give a different stimulus to the arm. Thanks Dan

Good points! I do agree that throwing uphill is a different stimulus to downhill.
