Great to see you back pitchside, hopefully "bump" into you one day as I've recently started covering EPL and EFL Championship. I don't think many appreciate the "step-up" from just shooting football to sending in live action shots, its a lot to juggle as Im finding out. Your videos and tutorials have helped me no end - Thanks and keep it up, we need you 🙂

Good example of how intensive it is during a game taking pictures. Its flat out essentially for 90+ minutes. Be interesting to have your blood pressure and heart rate monitored during a game, I suspect it would be interesting. 🥵

Hi Mark! Did you ever try using your "old" EF 400mm with your R3? I own the old EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM, and am thinking about pairing it with a R3, since my R6 has rolling shutter.

I didn’t no BUT do know plenty of guys that are using that set up and everything is fine👍🏻 I still use my old EF 70-200 on the R3 and it’s great

Hi there. Best place to find a good would be eBay I would say. You could also try fixation in London, they might have one or know where one might be👍🏻

Hi Dave. The agency that we represent applies for the games and our season accreditation. It’s a case of securing a position with an agency, usually commission based (earn a % of what you sell) and go from there. All agencies will ask to see your portfolio and website too. Hope that helps👍🏻

Hi. I quite often joined a colleague for the big games which I suppose appeal to clients more. I think it is just a case of supply and demand really on the whole the more action you catch, the more sales will be made I guess👍🏻

Do you manually adjust exposure? How could you do it so fast?

That’s right yes. I shoot in auto iso which allows me to adjust the exposure on the top scroll wheel whilst pressing the set button👍🏻

It really does depend on the game Tony. I’ve had a lot of 0-0 games with very little return - £1-5 on a handful of uses. A big story might return £50-100 on a real good day with multiple uses. It’s for the love of it on commission really and of course building a strong portfolio👍🏻

Good spot. I opted for the 1DX on the 70-200 simply for the faster shutter rate. Fortunately, I now have a second 1DX so that will be going on the 400 for the next game and the 5D4 will be by my feet on the wide angle. Thanks for watching👍🏻

Love This video!! I’m currently looking for a telephoto lens and can’t afford a 400mm 2.8. I already have a 70-200 2.8, do you think a 180-600mm 5-6.3 would do a good job for football photography?

Hi Frances. I would say if you can, save up for an old mk1 non IS version 400. You really need the depth that the 400 2.8 achieves for sport. You might also find that when at 5-600mm you’ll be at f6.3 and that will dictate high ISO’s resulting in noisy grainy images!

@@MarkKerton thank you for answer! I use Nikon Z6, and what if I look at a 400mm f/4? It’s far cheaper than the 2.8 lens and still quite light right? Or is there a big difference? I live in south Spain and usually shooting football in sunny days luckily

Thanks, appreciate that. Usually send between 30 to 50 images pitch side and then obviously run a second edit where I might send another 60 later on in the evening.👍🏻

Was excited to see you back on the pitch, Mark! I don't remember you saying before, but what's your process for culling photos and getting them from the camera to the laptop in real-time while you're on the sidelines? Seems like a lot to juggle! Are you just quickly card-swapping and happen to cut that out of the video? The images look great, by the way! I'm especially impressed by the color grading. Very nice!

Thanks for watching, really appreciate your support. I rate the images I want to work on, using the star rating system on the cam body. These rated images will then appear at the top of my photo mechanic set. The unrated images will gather up at the base of the set in Photo mechanic. When downloading, it’s a simple process of one in one out and I always have a spare card ready to go back in the camera so I don’t miss any action. I will be making a video on my pitch side workflow soon, watch this space👍🏻

Hi Mark. Another great video. Im thinking of having a go at sports photography at my local non-league club. Had to give up low level aviation photography due to breaking my leg in the Mach Loop. I'm a Nikon shooter but I have a D500 (crop sensor) and a D810 (full frame). I don't have a 400mm f/2.8 but I do have a 300mm f/2.8. Is it worth putting that on my D500 for the 1.5x reach and have the 70-200mm f/2.8 on my D810? Many thanks for any help. Please keep all the vids coming, especially the sports and aviation.

Great video yet again and brilliant insight in what it takes to take great images at a football match. I work with a chairman of a football club and he keeps asking me do the photos for them but playing on Saturdays it clashes with my motorsport work. I really must take a week off from it and do some work for him.
