Having delt with a mother that had this same mental disorder, I can tell you. All she wants is someone thats going to help continue to ENABLE her. We finally told my mother "We're cleaning this JUNK up, And Throwing it all away" She isn't reselling any of this garbage. And thats where she is finding it, IN THE GARBAGE... She clearly has a mental illness that needs addressed
I'll bet you she wears the same clothing for days at a time. And you are correct, You'd be lucky to find a path from a coach that she sleeps on and the path to the bathroom and maybe to the kitchen.
A neighbor around the corner from me has this same problem in her basement and in her two-car garage. It's gotten so bad she has to park her car in the driveway. The HOA and the township can't do anything unless there's a rodent infestation or hazardous waste accumulation. Then they can bring the law down on her and force her to clean the place up.
Good idea but we called them for someone in much worse physical condition and bad hoarding and they did NOTHING after she said she didn't want help....closed the case ....never told us or anything!!!
She isnt selling anything and never will. Mentally ill and no matter how much clean up is done she will do it again and again. She won't live a lot longer in her bad health condition or be in a nursing facility soon. Where is her family thru all this??😢
I lived next door to a picker, who sold his estate sale finds. At least he had a high privacy fence and no one had to look at his treasures 24/7. The way the woman interacted with the reporter, there is no way she’s actively selling any of that stuff. It looks like she was lucky to get dress, feed herself and not drive her truck into something.
Retired ff, and thought the same thing about the smell! The job involves an entire collection of aromas that are each distinct (distinked?) and can permeate uniforms, skin, hair, sinuses for an entire 24 hour shift, providing ample time to make you want to puke. Houses like this have a particular, unmistakeable smell, and seeing one brings the memory of that stench to life. It's thick, greasy, stagnant, and seems to cover every item in the house like invisible mud. If it had a color it would be a blend of very old scabs, oily brown/gray hair, gnarly toenails, and the wierd slime that rotten lettuce turns into. Did you know that humans can not forget a smell? They may not know where they smelled it before, but they will know they've smelled it before. I really wish this was not true.
Brother, As a former Zoning Inspector for a twp here in Ohio with currently about 1300 homes. I can back you up 100% on your experiences. I personally worked on 4 of these such cases that where labeled "Extreme" And they all had very similar problems. Three of the four of them where older females that flew the 🏳️🌈 flag. All liberal Democrat voters (See the multiple stickers on the multiple dead cars PARKED IN THE YARD. All three had multiple small animals (Dogs,Cats, Rabbits, Chickens) Most just running wild and breeding uncomfortably. And if you did the quick math, Take what you see outside the home. Multiple that by 12, And then multiple that number by 8 (The hight of the ceilings) that will get you pretty close to the amount of GARBAGE, TRASH, and JUNK that was inside of the home. We had one lady appox. 75 yr old that had a 2400 sq ft home that she literally couldn't get into any longer, And was sleeping in a U-Haul Rental Van that she was paying the monthly rate on to sleep in it in here DRIVEWAY. When Law Enforcement officers went to do a Welfare Check on her, She drew a firearm on them, And was subsequently shot. She survived the shooting. And thankfully was given a mental evaluation and was found to have a mental disorder. So the charges where dropped when she was committed to a State Mental Facility. However, No kids, No family that wanted to deal with the deplorable home that was condemned days after the shooting. We found multiple dead dogs and cats in a freezer in the basement (Yes still frozen) with Names, Birth and Death dates written on a card attached to each bag. The 4th was a older male in his late 70's that was convinced that he would be in the TV show "American Pickers" if he could gather and purchase enough old junk at auctions and from junk in ppls garbage. He also turned violent and had to be removed via Law Enforcement officers when he threatened zoning and Health Department officials with a firearm. The fact is, These individuals need to be placed in Institutions that we NO LONGER HAVE. Instead, Big Pharma just says "Put them on this "Head Med" And they'll be fine to live in a civilized society. WRONG....
This person Definitely has a problem , This happened in my neighborhood outside of Cleveland . The Owner was fined then Jailed and somehow lost ownership of the property .They the Township really tried to work with them ,Then the County got involved thank God .
I had Norwegian wharf rats in my 250 year old colonial home when I lived in upstate New York . Those danged things are aggressive and big. I had three cats and a Labrador retriever and all four animals terrified of them. And they chew through everything, literally.
Hoarders dont resell anything thats what they always say to explain it away ! It looks like she can hardly walk but she can load peoples garbage into her truck !!
A lady around the corner from here (50s?) has a garage and basement full of junk. The death of her parents is probably what triggered it. She's quiet and reclusive. I'd bet she's never been with a guy in her life.
@@amybynum8962 they all say that. Surely you’ve watched the show Hoarders. As soon as the crew starts throwing stuff on the truck the hoarders go bat 💩 crazy. And it’s not even over useable stuff. It’s over broken crap or filth.
As a former Zoning Inspector, I can tell you THEY DO... However here is what happens. We send the homeowner multiple letters (All certified mail) Or have a Civil Law Enforcement Officers deliver them to them. Then there's a waiting period that is usually 90 days to get the homeowner to address the issue (which often gets ignored) Then we call the County Prosecutor and get them to send at least 3 letters. Add in another 90-120 days. Then if things still are being ignored. The Prosecutor can file charges against them (and they often do). That usually makes the offenders show up to court. Then the crying and whinning starts to the Judge about "I need help to clean it up, And I don't have the $$$ to hire help or to get trash containers" So then the judge will typically give them from 3-6 months to get it cleaned up. And they tell them "You can not add any more to this,Do you understand??" And then NOTHING IS DONE in that amount of time, Except adding MORE JUNK TO THE EYE SOAR. So then the Prosecutor has to start issuing more letters and file more charges and get the homeowner back infront of the Judge AGAIN. Thats usually a good year or more later. And here comes the EXCUSES AGAING... This goes on, and on, and on... As a former Zoning Inspector I had 4 problem propertys in my community that I said "I'll take the job on and get them cleaned up, And then when I'm done, I'll give the job to the next guy who wants the extra $$$. It took me almost 5 yrs to deal with these 4 individuals (all at the same time) And the Twp had already had them to court at least once if not twice. These Judge's are going soft of HARDCORE CRIME today, What do you think they're doing with this nonsense??? I can tell you, Just kicking the can down the road and NOT holding these individuals responsible. Because I can also tell you about one we currently have that said "F-You, Its my yard ill fill it with as much garbage and trash and junk that I want. And im not cleaning anything up" We've had him in court over 15 times since 2018. And the daily fine is $750.00 and we have liens filed against all of his properties. He just gives us the finger as we continue to document the growing mountain of junk. And the courts say there's not much else we can do about it. He's almost 70 now, And his health is poor. Sooner or later we will own the property do to the lien amounts when he dies. But until then, Mount Crapmore Continues to grow...

It's good for tv, but it doesn't provide after care or follow-up with the hoarders. After the show is taped, they go back to doing the same things all over again.
I’m a Hoarder, and I became one because I was always lonely and rejected. My games, books, movies offer me comfort. They became like family to me, very sentimental. The only way I was able to stop myself from Hoarding even more is watching this show. I could EASILY become like this if I wasn’t self aware enough.

This happened next door to me. The owner moved out in 2015 and left everything a mess. Then the squatters/thieves/dealers took over; one was her son and because of that, law enforcement couldn’t do anything about trespassing. Plus the owner had to report him for trespassing and she wouldn’t. They stole from neighbors and vandalized our places. In 2018, the city condemned the property. After years of back and forth and the dealing and stealing continuing, we got a new mayor and city manager, and they took action against all condemned properties, bad owners, and squatters. The city gave the owner notice that the property needed to be cleaned up and the home brought to code or face demolition. The owner went to court to fight it. I appeared, too, with documentation and police reports, fought and won. The city demolished the home and cleared the land of all the junk and placed a lien against the property. My life and my neighbors’ lives are now peaceful.

Imagine being able to have a house this nice (any of us shopping for a house now will understand this) and destroying it this way. Just disgusting and sad.
It's mental health disorder, people who horde don't mean to do it. Unfortunately, what often causes this is a traumatic loss. They find themselves unable to part with things and have an excuse for why they 'need' it, like to sell etc but hoarding like this is due to mental illness.

They also have a good retirement plan.....and tenure, which most Americans do not have. She said multiple times, "I NEED HELP!" Instead of shaming her and putting her down karen, about wanting to sell things, perhaps the neighborhood or HOA, or upper echelon city folk can all pitch in and buy it all from her, with the agreement she won't do it again. "They're not concerned, they don't like the view, its not 'good' for the neighborhood." Sounds like the lady is right! They say they 'can't' help her??? Yeah brute force probably won't work. Smh. It’s not that simple. Have you ever watched the show, “Hoarders?” A hoarder can’t throw anything away and can’t part with things. The reporter should have asked what item did she sell and when. Guarantee there is going to be an excuse as to why she hasn’t sold anything yet. It’s a mental health issue and she needs help.
Right are people thick? This video actually infuriates me because She said I need help I can’t do this on my own and then the reporter is like nobody can help her unless she asks for help … is she really that thick
Just like you said, it's in the city and county code. He can shut that down, fine her, and have city remove ALL of it. It's a crime what she is doing and he knows that but he is allowing it. Even IF the city over steps, it's up to her to hire a lawyer which she won't or can't do. Let her go and try to sue the city for stopping her from turning a residential street into a city dump .
A HOA can put a lien on the property, but so what? She’s not going to sell it tomorrow. Fines? Put someone like that in jail for 6 months? Not going to happen.
@bre6992 There are going to be legal channels that would have to go through to make that happen and it's likely time consuming. Probably why this has dragged on so long already.
@Plutogalaxy Getting a house with this economy, is a luxury now. Imagine people that try so hard just to get a house, then they see a woman like this abusing it. Not to mention the neighbors are getting rats, i'm sure bed bugs and roaches will be next. I would absolutely not want to live near her, not because she might not be a nice person but I mean come on that is just trashy.
They said the aging agency said they cant help until she asks for help? I heard the woman say before the tv cameras that she needs help. Get the guy from Midwest Magic Cleaning, he’ll get it done, and respect the woman while doing it!
They always say they want help. As soon as you try to take one item to the bin they will give a litany of excuses as to why they need it and its usefulness.
First she says she's selling the stuff. Then she says she needs help - but how on earth did she get all of that stuff into her truck herself and then back out into her yard, home, garage, etc.?
I’m sure the inside is full. Call the fire department and have them do an inspection. They would have to be able to get in and rescue her if anything were to happen. Call Adult Protective Services, this woman is very sick and living in unsafe conditions. Probably rat infested! If the mayor lived across the street from her I’m sure they would find a way to get it cleaned up.
YUP could see one out our old windows, and YES it impacted the price. the home next to the local hoarder had house for sale signs up in the windows for TEN YEARS before they finally found someone to buy. and they were asking below market.
I once lived with a lady ( I rented a room) and she became a hoarder. She was traumatized from the sudden loss of her only son. Her coping skills or control of the situation was collecting "things" some random. some specific , like snowmen, Tupperware ,booksand sports bottles. Yes. Grief and loss can trigger this but at the end of the day, in this case, the lady is a danger to herself and to her neighbours. I hope she gets the help she needs and/or have it forcibly removed and billed to her.
My grandmother was a horrible hoarder. Clothes were her problem. Although it never spilled outside into the yard. She had so many clothes she refused to get rid of my grandfather bout a whole seperate house for her to keep the stuff thay couldnt fit in the one they had. It was never unkempt, filthy or nasty. Just way too much stuff. This stemmed from my grandmothers childhood. They were extremely poor and my grandmother and her siblings clothes were made out of potato sacks....🤷🏾♀️
Wow, how frustrating for the neighbors! That would drive me absolutely up the wall! Imagine what the inside of that beautiful home looks like and just think what she could do with the money she wastes on all that rubbish! Another example of mental illness in the world.
The city's fire marshall can help. It's clearly a fire hazard to have entryways and exits blocked. Once that's deemed then someone should be able to take action with the city and with adult protective services. The elderly have to be housed in a safe, clean home. This is not.

The older single family homes like what most people are after are not what corporate/inventors are buying they actually end up losing money on those because of the cost of maintenance, yard care, taxes, insurance it is just not what they are after. @@askew9976That is one good thing TLC does with their "Hoarders" show. They have professionals come in & get rid of the junk, unused, unsafe, & even moldy stuff. They are diplomatic but firm, also often enlisting the involvement of family members (who are quite upset) or a long time friend. I'm sure TLC pays for it to be hauled away, but it needs to be done. A psychologist is also involved & so helpful when the person in need doesn't listen to family or neighbors. If rats have been seen there that is a health issue & the city is responsible. They've also had city officials on the show for that reason & it made a big difference. It was mandatory that they clean up an unsafe environment so it makes no sense this city does not.
This is so true & sad… it has manifested In the physical. Open her heart to receive help Lord 🙏🏼 I have literally one junk drawer with papers & random stuff. Every few months I empty it out I couldn’t imagine living this way. This is unbelievable.
We had a similar issue with a neighbor years ago. Our city will warn them twice, then they dispatch a junk truck, dispose of everything that's not to code, and send the homeowner the bill. Code is simple: If it's obviously broken, unusable, not indicating any type of organization, and visible from the interior of a neighbor's home, the city WILL 100% act.
This is a psychological problem and even when people ask for help, they have trouble letting go. If the authorities REFUSE to deal with the problem, it will be unresolved until the woman dies.
Hoarders don't respond well to "help". It is a mental disorder. If you offered to remove everything and clean the house, unless she's treated for her illness, she'll fill it right back up again.
For decades the school teacher won out over the persistent question of why Johnny can't read. That's a formidable adversary when asking why her yard can't be cleaned. 🤣
None of this would happen if there was an *H.O.A* . This lady can ask for help , she doesn't want it . Even if you try and sold your home , No one will buy a home , where the neighborhood is a mess. This isn't a problem an HOA solves, this is a problem that an HOA would push off on someone else and pretend didn't exist. "Not in OUR nice neighborhood!" There needs to be social support systems for people struggling in situations like this. The poor woman needs help but America has too much individualism baked in to provide the support needed in so many cases.
I do not know why this cannot be ruled to fire hazard. All the garages are blocked and the entrance door to the front is blocked. If the woman has a heart attack or some other problem, the ambulance people cannot get in.
Hoarding is a mental health issue and this poor woman is overwhelmed with the situation. I also feel for the neighbours, in this nice neighbourhood with lovely homes. Hope things will be resolved soon.
Why isn’t Public Health in that town condemning this? Plus get Social Services to work with her to get permission to start cleaning it up. The City Council needs to step up their blight ordinances!! 😮
If you've ever watched the series "Hoarders," you know these folks are typically very stubborn, self-centered, and resistant to change. If this can't be fixed by current laws, then the laws need to be changed. Their local government is failing these poor neighbors. Can't a social worker be called in to help?
if you've ever watched any other reality tv show ever you'd recognize Hoarders as overdramaticized exploitative garbage... do you really have no empathy for these people?
Most if not all of the hoarding is because of a very traumatic event in their lives. It's their way of dealing with things and I agree something needs to be done because I wouldn't want to live next to these people, but to say they are self-centered is not right. Sometimes they have lost children and that's how they deal. It's actually very sad.
How did she get all that stuff on the property by herself? It looks like she can barely walk. The neighbors should call the Hoarders television show to see if she will accept their help.
Honestly, you do not want to live in a subdivision with an HOA. There SHOULD be laws on the books already that could be enforced against this hoarder - at least to clean up the outside disgusting junk yard. She's not going to sell upholstered furniture that's been sitting out in PA weather for who knows how long, it's probably rotting already! Some neighbor - or the City Attorney for pete's sake, who has the power to do it - needs to file a civil law suit for an unsanitary nuisance under state law against this retired teacher and get a judgment to have the property cleaned up, at least on the outside. Enough of this baloney!
hoas are karens paradise.. even ppl who live adjacent properties are harassed by hoa karens and they illegally take or destroy their things.. ya haven't seen horror stories have you. total toxic control freaks... on every speck of your property, paint colours what and were plants can be, what and where you can park on your own property etc etc.
I have an elderly friend who is a hoarder. His excuse is that someone might need whatever it is that he hoards. He even has old car ashtrays , car mats from salvaged cars and any thing else that others throw away. He never throws plastic shopping bags away. He is renting an apartment for senior citizens and is always afraid to let someone into his home, because of the mess.
She was wearing dirty clothes and has mobility issues. It's sad, but not as sad for her obviously as it is for the neighbors who have to see that massive pile of BLEEP sitting outside rotting in the weather and with rats running around daily. What will happen if one of their kids or a pet is attacked by some rats?
I can’t believe the local government doesn’t have laws in place to threaten to kick her out. Hoarders show is always saying, “They’re going to kick you out unless progress is made.” Why can’t that happen here?
