0-Coast system is another alternative. The sponsor, distrokid... Spotify owns them, so it feels like Spotify charging the musicians and then charging the listeners... musicians need a lot of listens just to break even... but I don't have a problem with them being the sponsor - the YT compensation system needs to be fixed too. Until then, get whatever reasonable sponsors you can, and distrokid is a reasonable sponsor for a music gear video.

Lovely sounding synth. BB style delays can sound a bit like something in a can, as you say. That is what I tend to use them for: not for a delay in the normal sense, but with short delay time to create Karplus-Strong kind resonance, for timbral adjustment, and sometimes even to create a repeating noise pattern using a filtered sound and high feedback. For actual delay effects, I use an external effect pedal.

Well… everything Pittsburgh Modular did before this came from Pittsburgh. This was designed in Pittsburgh, but is made in China. I’ve held a similar sparkle for the company up to this point because I live in PA too and I thought it was special to have something designed and built in my home state. But now that Cre8audio has taken over production and distribution things have been outsourced. On one hand it’s probably the only thing that kept the company afloat while many others are going out of business. On the other hand they’ve moved from the special place in my heart they once occupied. With that said, the Taiga looks and sounds amazing and I’ll likely buy one… just not with the same reverence and zeal I would’ve had it been made in Pittsburgh.

Thanks for subscribing! Not a Behringer hater, I think they have some good products. I like the original stuff they make, Neutron, DM12 and so on. But they are also a company that does a lot of bad stuff like copying the Mother 32, DFAM, Keystep… Not to mention attacking the press and cultivating a almost sect like following online. I’d say that I am simply critical of Behringer. They are a very controversial company that are just out for profit by taking other companies ideas and at the same time pretend they are Robin Hood.

But I'm guessing you'll say the one big thing you don't like is the knob colors?🤪 No, I have no idea what you'll dislike... maybe not having a 2nd VCA/env for paraphonic mode? How would you compare it to the Behringer 2600 ?
@sub-jec-tiv
@sub-jec-tiv Год назад
I own a blue 2600 and several of Pittsburgh’s excellent recent Eurorack modules. They are quite different in what they sound like and what they’re meant to do. The Taiga, being a Buchla-inspired design, is more designed for experimental sounds… you can definitely do normal synth sounds and the Pittsburgh filter can do acid nicely, but the design of this synth, with the “west-coast” Buchla-style wavefolding and Low-pass gate option really points it more in the direction of wild sonic exploration. Also Taiga has a really flexible filter (having bandpass is really nice!) Taiga sounds pretty fat, as well. 2600 is a more “classic subtractive synth” sound and a bigger tool-kit. Besides the 3 oscillators with sync, you get a VCA (2 if you count the Ring Mod), filter, 2 envelopes (super snappy), envelope follower (can use as a simple envelope too), a preamp, ring mod, noise gen, sample & hold, a 2-input switch, and a really super useful voltage processor with a lot of options for inverting / adding voltages or adding slew/portamento. TL;DR: Taiga sounds huge and fat and would be great for experimental sound design and that more Buchla-inspired vibe. 2600 is a super-classic more east-coast (Moogy) sound. While they both include a ton of different tools, the size of the 2600 allows for more modules and broader functionality. 2600 is like a full eurorack setup in one instrument. Hope that is helpful! I love my 2600, and love my Pittsburgh modules… but i don’t make experimental music. If i were into wilder weirder sounds i’d love the Taiga probably.

Nice synth indeed, many qualities. However, the preamp is not such an exceptional thing: the ARP 2600 and its various clones have had a preamp since 1971 (plus a voltage processor, an envelope follower and a ring modulator, while also sporting 3 VCO useable as LFOs and a separate, dedicated LFO). In a way, except for the new and indeed very interesting design, this is basically a 2600 clone where the bottom line of “modules” (comprising the voltage processor, envelope follower and ring modulator) has been replaced by three wave folders, and the spring reverb swapped for an analog delay. If the price does not exceed 800-1000€, it may be an interesting choice vs a Behringer 2600 or a Korg/ARP 2600. But I do not see anything really revolutionary here.
@BoBeats
@BoBeats Год назад
Having used the 2600 a fair bit I do see your point. However in practice they feel and sound quite different. I also wouldn't categorize the 2600 as your typical "semi-modular" that I had in mind, it feels like its in its own category almost. Big and bulky and beautiful. But like you say: few things in modular is truly unique, it all depends on how willing you are to patch stuff
@goingmodular
@goingmodular Год назад
I see your point, and in a way I do share it: both in terms of construction and user interface, the 2600 is a world of its own. The positive thing that this synth here can bring, probably (and assuming the price is good), is to make many of these complex functions of the 2600 much more accessible. And this, in itself, is already a very good thing, for the 2600 is indeed definitely a difficult machine. Great survey of this new gear by the way, as usual. Thank you for your work for the community.
@soysos.tuffsound
@soysos.tuffsound Год назад
About the 2600, I had one for about 30 years and sold it for a pretty hefty sum about a year ago. The Taiga is much of the feature set of the 2600 sure, but it's so much more and it's a new instrument designed from the ground up. Plus it sounds amazing. 3 full featured oscillators with warping and waves shaping is just the beginning.
@goingmodular
@goingmodular Год назад
@@soysos.tuffsound I cannot speak for a sound comparison, obviously, having never heard the Taiga in person. Many of the sounds I hear in this video, at least, are nothing that a 2600 could not do too, so I am not sure how much of a distinct character each machine has compared to the other (except when it comes to the wave folders, which do have a very typical signature, always). Where this Taiga synth seem to shine however is in the accessibility it may provide to those of the most esoteric functions of an older synth like the 2600. That, alone, is already something of value, especially for beginners, since (as I said in my initial comment), the 2600 IS a difficult machine to master (I keep seeing 2600 clones pop up on eBay all the time with the mention "Almost new, used only once and put back in its box after that" !). But then, @BoBeats also cites some frustration linked to the many "hidden commands" that you have to activate by pressing several keys as the same time, "à la" Moog Mother 32, which is different kind of annoyance... Do not get me wrong, this looks like a fine machine, and one that I would certainly recommend if its price is in the 1000 € range. What I wanted to relativise was the "novel" character of most of its features: to me, this looks rather like a clever association and reconfiguration of otherwise very classical functions of the modular world.

I think the delay is ment for sound desing. Fast delay times can have cool effects on the general sound. But it wouldn´t hurt to give the delay a wider range.

I think these things are too complicated. You can create the same sounds with regular synths. Unless it's just chaos. Which it mostly is in moduler videos. Chaos. However. Some nice sounds here. The sounds is ok.

Can you name a few "regular" synths that uses west coast paradigm in it? As there are almost none and that kind of synthesis except other things lend itself to simple very natural sounds that you won't get from regular substractive synth. I would actually love to own west coast inspired regular synth with presets and midi, but it does not exist. btw semimodulars are just about as complex as lot of regular synths that have good mod matrix, its just if you happen to have one of those and are not too deep into synthesis you probably ignore it and not create more convoluted sounds with it, you can ignore the patchbay on the taiga same way and you will get very simple and straightworward synth capable of quite big sound palette.

>The new king? Ehm... It's becoming too overhyped for my taste. They bought so much sponsored reviews from RU-vid bloggers and triggered their promo company which synchronously published videos. It gives me a feeling that someone trying to sell me the thing which is actually not that unique. It's good that it has 3 oscs (and not 2) and it has a nice patchbay with sturdy metallic plate-mounted sockets, but if you don't count the wavefolders on the oscs it's not very different from other semi-modular monophonics. Btw, are these wavefolders analog or digital? So, I think, it's not a king, it's just another monophonic with artificial hype around it. For example, Behringer Neutron also has many interesting features like smooth VCO and LFO waveform crossfading, integrated BBD and overdrive, various modular tools like attenuverters, S&H and slew rate limiter as a bonus, but yes, Neutron only has 2 VCOs, not 3, and its patchbay sockets are probably not so cool to work with (they are PCB mounted and feel rough when you inserting the jack), maybe Neutron filter is not the best (it gives clipping on high resonance which can be unsuitable for some scenarios). But it's almost free, it costs nothing.

Yepp. There is a question mark in the title. For me it could be a go to recommendation if someone wants a semi modular. In terms of number of videos. There was 5 videos. To a combined audience of several hundred thousand people. It is not many, and not overhyped at all. Frankly if you watch the videos they arn’t very hype. All of them pretty technical walkthroughs. And if you think I am not being fair in my review feel free to say so. I tried highlighting the things I enjoyed and how they work as well as the major thing I didnt like at all.

@@BoBeats No no, don't get me wrong! I think that your video (as well as other videos about Taiga) is pretty honest and gives a nice demo with technical details. I actually like it! I just want to say that when they (Pittsburgh Modular) release these similar videos so synchronously it gives an impression of attack :) But I don't know, maybe it IS the most efficient way to announce the product.

Thank you for clarifying and know that I deeply respect if a viewer think I am not providing good and balanced information. As for launching a product I think its just a thing to get used to. Its how marketing nowdays work and unfortunately for me as a RU-vidr theres big risk in waiting say 3-4 weeks to after a launch to release my video, since my income is based on videos performing well in terms of views. Since I am not generally paid to make the video. I can totally see that it can look weird. Reason people launch videos at the same time is that its a news embargo. So you get a time/date after which you can talk about a product. And because of above reason most want to release early.
