Fascinating new modular system from Pittsburgh with a decidedly West Coast bent. Too soon for a review, but here's half an hour of playing with the rather remarkable sequencer, the timbre of the oscillators and other bits and pieces. I added some reverb via the Chroma Console but otherwise it's all the VL2.

Especially love the sequencer on this. I hope they would consider selling it separately.

Is this really that much different than the Taiga? It sounds the same. What do you think since you've played with both of them.🤔🎶🎛💥

Previous VRL1 owner here, and brief owner of a Taiga. The default sound may be similar, since it uses a similar wavefolder and dynamics circuit. But the VRL is much deeper in terms of wave shaping, modulation, and also sequencing. There are features here, like the interconnected dual function generators that are unlike anything on the Taiga. And it's a complete instrument, with a controller and effects. My experience with the VRL1 convinced me it's a unique and extraordinary instrument, kind of a modern Buchla music easel. If you want to experiment with new sounds and complex patching on a stand-alone instrument, the VRL rules. Don't know yet if I can afford/justify buying the new one, but I do think it's awesome and unique. For what it's worth. Cheers. :)

It's perhaps more different than it appears. The approach is different - there's no bloody filter, which immediately makes me wonder what the heck i'm going to spend my time doing. It has a Maths built in rather than envelopes. Only one of the oscillators is like the Taiga, the other one is weirder. It has hard sync, ring mod and crushing plus a weird chance-based mini sequencer. And that's only the top half. The bottom half is an interesting 16-step sequencer with two channels and a mod channel with all sorts of digital shenanigans behind the scenes for sequence generation and manipulation. The Taiga Keys is a regular synth - this is not that :D

@@MoltenMusicTech No filter!? Hmmm, along with all the other unique features you mentioned this Voltage Lab seems VERY different! I can't wait to watch the video where you explain more about it now that you've shared a bit of just how unique it actually is. Thanks ~💡

I live my West Pest, but no filter on this is strange...

@@al.cavalu The dynamics controllers are technically filters combined with VCAs. So you can use them like you would a filter. They will affect both loudness and harmonics.
