Love the channel, Charlie. As others have mentioned, there are grungier parts of Pittsburgh, especially areas outside the city proper like Braddock and McKeesport where they simply don't have the money to take down all the vacant houses and everything. In case anyone is interested, the the red brick buildings around 11:45 are Bedford Dwellings, which I believe is the oldest public housing project in America. Franklin Roosevelt made an appearance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony back in the late '30s.

These videos are a good way to see non touristy America. It crazy how different the regions are. The houses differ so much. Back in the day you would have to wait to maybe get a glimpse in a magazine or something. The Information Age working at its finest. Thanks for the vid!
@lilimont2
@lilimont2 6 лет назад
PlinkoBlinko not.really because this person could be only showing you.one area that looks ran down or a bad area and what they feel is a hood that really ain't a hood just because you see homes that are old........it's best to visit for yourself and not take these videos literally and think you see something that you really dont... just because the title say pittsburgh hoods....this was a bad was to show pittsburgh and I'm sure he did the same for other videos cause he only showed one hood in.this video and he didn't even drive in it he drove by it....he just showed you a lot of old homes ....there are bad areas and tans down homes everywhere....if your going to act like your showing some real hood .....let them be real hood and go in them to real show it and define hood .....cause a hood is a dangerous place not just a area that a lot of ppl just hang out
@OdO_Gee
@OdO_Gee 6 лет назад
True. I understand what you're saying in relation to the title but for me I'm interested in just seeing the city's areas that are not on the beaten path. It's more about riding through a city I never been before. I don't really care if he goes to a hood or not I just don't want to see a bunch of tourist attractions.🙂 He could make videos of himself driving through the back streets of Paris and I would still watch. I like to explore. Much respect though.

@@OdO_Gee same, ive just recently got on this kick of watching videos of people goimg to different places throughlut the world and i found some real shit and some awesome channels. You can find a video of someome driving thru parts of just about any city in the world and also some world travlers that actually go real places that arent just tourist shit and its awesome. The sad part is just the majority of ppl dont care about that kinda stuff, especially here in America. Here in the US we care about dumb fucking shit straight up.

The first 4 minutes + are of 10th Ward, Lawrenceville. My family settled here in the late 1800's. The area is gentrifying now. Small row house go from $200,000 to $500,000 and condos from $300,000. If hood means neighborhood, this is a hood. 6 generations of my family has lived here. For the most of the 1900's, the area was ethnic Irish, Solvennes, and English. It started to become african american in the mid-90' (but never over 35%), and now is home to anyone that can afford it. There is a little bit of everything there, and for the most part everyone gets along.

@MrHorse-by3mp
@MrHorse-by3mp 6 лет назад
Yeah, the Hill District is by no means great but they've definitely cleared a lot of the really decayed pre-WWII housing in recent years. On the one hand the old buildings sort of gave the place personality, but at the same time it was a neighborhood in terminal decline since the '60s well past saving in any meaningful way. Hopefully they'll at least preserve the couple of Orthodox churches, synagogues, and landmarks of the Hill's history as a black neighborood. There are also some interesting houses around the "Sugar Hill" area above Herron Avenue where Pittsburgh's black middle class lived in the era of housing segregation.

I do ! The steps were a way of extending and connecting streets where actually creating drivable streets would be impossible... Imagine extremely angled or vertical streets... South 18th. Street from Carson Street in Southside to Brownsville Road in Mt.Oliver is an awe inspiring road and one that commands one's full attention while driving it... And there are two of those staircases on it... I also lived in Brentwood, a suburb of Pittsburgh, and there were two such "staircase" streets because of the steepness of the hills there...

Most of what’s left of the Hill District, part of what’s left of Uptown (around 5th Ave), part of West Oakland (by the Hill) and even what’s left of South Oakland Bottoms (Central Pittsburgh). Northside: Northview Heights Estates, what’s left of Allegheny Dwellings (aka Belleau Drive), Spring Hill’s Three Rivers Manor (aka 2100 Rhine Street), Allegheny Commoms East Apts, most of Marshall-Shadeland inc. Woods Run, most parts of Perry Hilltop like Wilson Ave & Charles Street Valley, part of California-Kirkbride around Brighton Pl & Morrison St, what’s left of Manchester and “Hoodtown” (Central Northside). South: Beltzhoover, Knoxville, what’s left of Arlington Heights, most of Mt. Oliver (borough), most of Allentown, part of Arlington, parts of Carrick, southeast Mt. Washington (by Beltzoover/Allentown) and formerly St. Clair Village. West: the “Greenway Apts” in Crafton Heights, most of Sheraden and Elliott, what’s left of Fairywood (formerly had Broadhead Manor & Westgate Village), most parts of McKees Rocks (borough) and Stowe Township near McKees Rocks. Mon Valley: most of Hazelwood-Glen Hazel, most of Homestead, part of Munhall, Mon View Heights & Mifflin Estates in West Mifflin, southern half of Swissvale, Rankin, most of Braddock/North Braddock, East Pittsburgh, parts of North Versailles, most of Duquesne, most of McKeesport and most of Clairton. Places in the Eastern Suburbs like parts of Penn Hills, Wilmerding, most of Turtle Creek, Brinton Manor in Braddock Hills, part of Pitcairn and even parts of Monroeville are getting worse due to ppl moving there.

FeelingGroovy I live in nearby Youngstown. Pittsburgh is old and it is really hard to tell if you are in a hood or a suburban type environment, with in the lower crest as they call it, but the ghetto parts of Pittsburgh make Cleveland’s seem alright. The home wood neighborhood and north Braddock are horrible. As well as parts of the north and south side, it is the hilliest city in America. You do not want to get stuck in a snowstorm in the wrong neighborhood trying to drive up a road.

If anyone goes to Pittsburgh and wants to take in the "postcard" view of the downtown area... You can go up to the Mt. Washington area and walk onto some of the observation platforms that are there. Also, riding the incline located across from the Station Square is a must and offers some excellent views ! You have to admire the engineering and ingenuity that went into designing and building it because it was, and still is, a way to get to and from work all of these past and current decades... The Belgian granite cobblestone roads were not only meant to be durable, but to provide traction for the horse drawn streetcars... And any salvaged cobblestones are highly prized !

Dale McNamee ..I’m in south Texas, we usually get ice once a year and he interstate will shut down. I think it’s the parking on a hill with ice in front of your house they worries me but if they take care of the roads that sure makes it easier. But to locals it’s probably nothing to them
@dalemcnamee2427

norlens noel, Pittsburgh gets freezing rain and it can paralyze the city, whether you live in a hilly street or not... In the "old days" ( I'm 64 ), the city and surrounding area used coal cinders and salt to battle the ice... And we homeowners did the same... But, people mostly avoided going anywhere until the temperatures got above freezing...

interesting, Charlie, that in the beginning your clip shows the manicured lawns, the American flags, and the pretty porches of suburbia. Then, your trip takes us past the PPG Arena, perhaps indicating the cross-town requirements to get to the more depressed areas - isolated and neglected and swept away as city parts that the visitor center does not want you to see. Was this your intent? Pretty savvy if so, Charlie.

A majority of Eastern Allegheny County is *gone* - from downtown to the county line. Sure there are a few exceptions such as Squirrel Hill and Shadyside, but those are very much exceptions as opposed to a majority of the other areas. Also consider the proven stats that make up the City of Pittsburgh. The worst drinking water in the entire country. Drink it at your own peril, as it will effect your health. The rivers are a toxic sewer. By far the worst part about the City of Pittsburgh would be the public school system. Pittsburgh Public School System... So bad that even the teachers that work there would never send their children there. They either send them to private schools or to suburban schools. The test scores clearly state it all; many hundreds of points lower than any other bordering suburban school. A system so bad that even a majority of people that do graduate from the Pittsburgh Public Schools... Still need 2+ semesters of remedial education just to make it to the level of a 101 class at a community college. In other words - a majority of graduates from the Pittsburgh Public School System - are about at a junior high school level of education in the real world - if that. 2nd best part about Pittsburgh... I clearly give credit to all of the public servants and first responders that work there. But one also as to note - that the system is just plain broke. Even wonder why Amazon will NEVER locate much of anything to the region
