In anticipation for Inside Out 2, Pete Docter recently stated in an interview that Pixar directors need to focus on clear mass appeal with more sequels and spin-offs instead of "autobiographical" stories, calling out movies such as Turning Red and Elemental...despite the fact that Lightyear, a Toy Story spinoff, vastly underperformed and was met with negative reception, while Elemental not only had critical acclaim, but ended up making a profit for the company. It's clear Disney and Pixar has NO IDEA what they're doing and they're no longer dancing around what they really mean when they imply that they're alienating general audiences.

Feel like if the First Inside Out and Coco came out today they would also get panned by corporations for feeling too autobiographical Inside Out literally existed because of Pete Doctor’s own Daughter and her emotions making the movie somewhat technically count as a autobiographical film

I think EVERY movie gets panned these days, there are YTs with original thoughts who might say they liked the movie but it didn’t live up to what they had hoped and wanted and people who say I don’t like the movie but for these specific reasons, other people are like hate get click, hate get views, hate get money and just hate on things only to feel that they will get an audience, (I really enjoy the Aladdin remake but not for the Genie, but I watched a couple just talk about how awful it is and it turned out they had never even seen it) wider general media sees this and thinks that they can give things negative reviews and people can click on their sites and articles. Like everything it started out with a small group of people watching things to give critical reviews and now a ton of YTs without creativity or intellect copy the model (not talking about this channel, I like this channel, the opinions are very insightful)

Isn't it insane how literally everyone in Hollywood is desperate to rebound in success while simultaneously avoiding ways to accomplish that because they are just that out of touch? Like, that breaking point of no return is fast approaching and they probably should wake up or get out. And you especially have to wonder how the people at Pixar feel right now, cause I'm confident most of them don't approve of this directions themselves, especially with people like Domee Shi being a key member of the creative trust.

I think people are jumping the gun and complaining too quickly 1) Alot of the sequels are fantastic so I wouldn't be worried 2) You can still make a creative movie that isn't inspired by the creator's personal experiences. I am an aspiring animator who grew up watching cartoons. Do I have to make a film about that. It might be cool but I could make an Indiana Jones style movie about treasure hunting 3) They can still inject some personal experiences into the movies 4) They are still going to make original stuff 5) Isn't it better to judge the movies on their own merit 6) That was always the tricky thing balancing art with commerce. The point is to make money at the end of the day.

I would also like to say: In late 2022 - 2023 people were hating on Pixar just because of lightyear not being the best and the last wish being so good made people say that Pixar has fallen off while dreamworks was on top plus the fact the Mario movie did so well for illumination people were making fun of Pixar’s box office issues and calling it woke despite elemental doing better than ruby Gillman and migration. This also lead to turning red getting hate just to fit the anti-Disney movement.

During that time I felt like I was taking crazy pills because everyone was commenting on the Elemental trailer "this looks like hideous!", "This animation is garbage", "Pixar should be EMBARRASSED to be putting out a movie that looks like this". And I say this as a working professional animator, the movie looked technically great. The world was big and complicated and vibrant, the creativity that went into the character animation and movement of the different elements was interesting and dynamic and inventive, it was rendered gorgeously. I kept seeing this same vitriolic response to the trailers as if Pixar had made Food Fight 2 and I just didn't get it. It was a good looking movie.

In Disney and Pixar's defense: other studios like DreamWorks Sony Animation and illumination even their own ORIGINAL movies aren't doing well either movies like Ruby Gilman and Migration either flopped or really underperformed and they are still relying on sequels or adaptations like Kung Fu Panda 4 and Garfield movie and Despicable Me 4 and Beyond the Spider-Verse also it's kind of ironic how Elemental still became the highest grossing ORIGINAL animated film from any studio since Coco in 2017.

Part of the problem may also be the animation style. Pixar’s been using the same style for years, which can be not only boring but also uncanny. I don’t really enjoy looking at Pixar human models. I do understand Pixar’s dilemma. They are a company built on nostalgia. People constantly compare their newer films to the films of old, expecting perfection and overdramatizing them if they’re not exactly how they want them to be. There’s more pressure on everyone to live up to their “glory days” even though their newer works ARE very good, definite classics for the future. Luca is one of my favorite Pixar films to date. But this? This is soul-crushing. The guy who strove for creativity and passion is now basically saying don’t do that. While some sequels sound good (Moana 2, Inside 2 was great), ONLY doing sequels and spin-offs is not what the general public is looking. Mr. Pete Doctor, get on the Internet. Watch videos like this, hear what the GENERAL public has to say instead of what your focus groups say. Sure there will be people who will be trolls, but there are people who just want good, ORIGINAL movies.

Hey Pixar? Lightyear was your biggest flop. Not Turning Red, Luca or Elemental. You can’t blame Turning Red and Luca for not doing well at the box office because you literally released both of them on your streaming service. By the time you put them in theatres, everyone had seen them so why would we spend money to go see it again in theatres? OF COURSE no one was going to go spend more money after that. And yet Lightyear crashed and burned by audiences. Was THAT not enough of a wake up call that we don’t want any more sequels and want original content? Especially with how many people watched Luca and Turning Red on Disney Plus AND the massive comeback Elemental had? And how dare you tell your last three directors that their stories and art aren’t mass appealable? I don’t even want to support Pixar anymore after this utterly tone deaf and disgusting anti art statement.

Turning Red was the high point of Pixar and exactly the direction animated family movies need to go in. It had a message and a topic that families need o hear, think about and deal with. All the other films plaid it too safe or jus flat out go things wrong. Onward couldn't help Covid bu they could have done more to make he fantasy world feel like a fantasy world and no "our modern world but with non-humans" Soul was a fun story with a fun ending but i came out a the wrong time. Whie people saw i as too woke and Black people saw it as too offensive . Whole I disagree, hat was the reaction I saw from multiple youtubers. Lucca did queerbaiting which lost audience from both the LGB community and he homophobic community. Good news he boys are strait , there are no gays in it and it is a better Little Mermaid remake then the little mermaid remake. side note, we do not hate black mermaids. Buz Lightyear was in he shadow of "has no Tim Alen" and cancel culture and more woke BS but he real reason it and Toy Story 4 failed was a complete lack of Mira Nova Toy Story 4 and 5 come down o a simple fact. Wood and Buz's story is over, half he voice cast is dead. Itt is time to let it go and move on. get some one new. Make a new focus. Elemental plaid it too safe. predictable story and no enough characters. It might be a new idea but the plot has been done before. and Elio looked bad from the trailer. though the idea sounds good. if Pixar wans o do sequels hey need let characters age up and deal with teen issues and young adult issues. life doesn't just end a 21. kids need to learn about mature subjects. learn how to deal with them.

There are several major problems within Disney on why their movies are flopping. One, budgets, the budgets are too high. $200,000,000 for Elemental. Really?! It cost 150 million for Spider-verse and Puss in Boots. You can't make a movies cost a quarter of $1 billion then expect it to make $1 billion just because you're a big company. Two, marketing, the marketing for every movie from Disney has been garbage. No interviews, no hot ones, barely any trailers, no promotions with Disney RU-vidrs, and the list goes on. Marketing is vital for any movie and if it's bad, then the movie will get no money. Three, victim blaming, they are blaming the audience for their failures and not themselves. No, it's not anyone's fault but yours that your movie bombed, Disney! if you blame the audience, then they're not going to watch anything you make because they know you're going to get mad at them and not yourself for why your movie failed. Fourth, target audience, let's be real, Disney shouldn't be marketing to kids or any side of the political party. They NEED to target the parents. Parents are the ones who decide what their kids watch. Parents are the ones who will spend their money on their kids so they are the ones who Disney needs to market to. If parents don't want their kids watching Disney, then they are lost as a company.
@edwarddu6919
@edwarddu6919 3 месяца назад
You say that as if parents in our modern world won't just cancel or boycott these movies as both sides of the aisle say if the movies don't support their political opinions. Creativity dies when you bend to the whims of mass appeal. I personally argue that marketing to parents won't work for the creation of truely creative movies and instead, directors should tell the stories they want.

You can't say one bad word about the movie without being called a racist. Even if you make a criticism that has nothing to do with Halle!!! Scuttlebutt was absolutely garbage for example. Awkwafina was nauseating as Scuttle. But you can't say that without someone bringing it back to Halle and saying you just don't like the movie because you can't handle a black Disney princess. 6:57 It’s funny because Pixar will often have a movie about a masculine experience, and I’ll have zero trouble enjoying the film as a woman. I don’t even notice nor care. Most movies speak to the masculine experience and yet few women complain. It’s only when you make a more female-focused movie that people get mad.

I don't think ppl get angry at well made female experince based movies and if they do they are just sexist but most ppl get mad at cliche strong female characters that have no personality or character developement and are just plain boring and trying to tap into the young girl market. Even if they make money like Captain Marvel there is no doubt they suck ass. Watch Filmento's video about the new Charlie's Angels if u don't get what I mean

It takes a whole level of denialism to look at a spin-off that flopped and an original movie that was well praised and did decently in the box office and conclude that it's best to make more of the spin-off movies that flopped. I don't know if it's been stated already. But it's kinda funny that in 2022, DreamWorks released a sequel of a spinoff of one of their more signature and profitable brands of a character who debuted in that brand's first sequel (Puss in Boots) and became a huge success, critically and commercially with the film still being talked and mentioned around long after its release. But a Spinoff film in that same year of one of Pixar characters from Pixar's 1st and successful brand is barely a blip on the radar. (Lightyear) with little word about them other than how medicore it was. Makes you think, huh?

All the Lightyear slander is making me feel alienated tho just because that’s the only Pixar movie in recent memory that I’ve rewatched multiple times but I do still love the rest of Pixar’s output from this decade so far. Most of the blame rests solely on Disney and I feel so bad for Pete Docter he’s in such an unwinnable position.

What Pixar and other studios like Dreamworks, Sony and Ilumination don't seem to understand is that what the people dislikes is badly written stories. Turning Red and Soul were very good, speaking of themes a lot of people can relate like our relationships with our parents or what do we want to do with our lives. I cannot speak for Luca and Elemental because I haven't watched those but it seems to appeal to a lot of people. Lightyear on the other side, it was not that bad but it was pretty mediocre. The same can be said of Incredibles 2 even tho it's a little older. But is not like sequels are necessarily bad. Monster University and Cars 3 were pretty solid( again a bit older but it works), heck, even Toy story 4 worked even if it was a bit unnecesary in the story. The issue is that they don't let stories thrive in the hands of the creative teams and instead the executive are cuting past the edges, substracting the movies of their precious hearts. An example of this is clearly Wish, which is not pixar but is disney still. Moving into dreamworks Puss in Boots 2 is a sequel of a Spin off!! And the movie was amazing because it innovate not only with its story but also its animation. On the other side, Kung Fu Panda 4 was a mess with barely anything good on it because the writing was bad. Now on their original movies, Ruby Gillman flopped hard and The Bad Guys thrived so again it's not necessarily true that new ideas are bad It also doesn't work that the studios doesn't even respect their artists. Both Dramworks and Pixar have announced massive layoffs to save their precious millions. Prefering to use ai or cheap outsourcing, once again robbing the movies of the creativity that people loved

It's sad how this beloved studios is going down the drain. Even though I tried of them doing sequels instead of original ideas, I'm really praying that Inside Out 2 is the only good thing out of this upcoming line of unessary sequels by the company.

One thing I've noticed is that Pixar have never made a film based on a pre existing IP. Every film they've made has either been an original idea, or a sequel, prequel or spin off to said original idea. They've never adapted a book, comic or video game, and I'm kinda glad they haven't. And also blame Disney for this, Pixar deserve to thrive. And we don't hate minorities, we hate bad writing, and Lightyear was poorly written, but it wasn't the fault of the gay relationship.

Elemental has skyrocketed to being my favorite movie. It really touched my heart. When I heard about it I wouldn't stop talking about going to see it for weeks. I just knew that I at least was going to like it because something about elements is up my alley and I'm a huge sucker for a good romance, especially an "interracial" romance. I absolutely loved it because Ember directly mirrors me. I'm not an immigrant and I'm black, not Asian. But still, discrimination and mistreatment from other people, family having high expectations for you and feeling like you can't be your true self around them, having a a fiery temper because you have a difficult time understanding and expressing your true feelings? Those are the ABCs of me. Wade perfectly mirrors my fiance (who's white) and it was like seeing our relationship on the big screen. I got a little emotional during some parts of it. Anyway I say all that to say that Elemental almost felt like old Pixar again. From the beautiful story with the movie really tugging at your heart strings (typical Pixar), the STUNNING animation and the fact that they weren't afraid to do a love story considering Disney has been trying to stay AWAY from love stories lately (cough cough *Wish* cough cough), it felt like something Pixar would have come up with 10 years ago. I would have loved to have grown up watching something like Elemental. 😍

It genuinely makes me pissed the way they talk about soul, turning red and Luca, like especially Luca for me because I am gay and watching that movie made me feel so seen. Even if I can't relate to soul in the same way doesn't mean it's a bad story that I won't watch just because I'm not the targeted audience because I'm white, the fact that it's still personal makes me want to watch it anyway!(plus, to hear about experiences that I haven't gone through are still important) But things like lightyear? I could not give a damn. It just sucks how so much media have been bought off and now they all just feel like the same boring and bland work..
