On my vacation to Japan, I watched Toy Story 2 in Japanese on the plane. When buzz did the thing, there was Earth in the background instead of the American flag. Edit: Did you guys notice the characters speaking lip synced perfectly with his voice?
Yes I'm French and I've always seen it with a Globe, I had no idea it was an American flag in the original version I had it on DVD, I wonder if it would change back to the American flag if I changed the audio to English?
@Mousketeer Pura why would it be lazy or strange, I don't understand your comment. Watching it with the audio in English would mean watching it in its original version so it would make sense that the images would also be from the original version.
@@byzaurum6677 I hate these, as in Star Wars "Count Dooku" became "Count Dookan" cause ku sounds like ass Gotta be worried about kids...........................................................?
“The UK version of Zootopia had a corgi” I’ve seen this being stated all over the internet, and it’s completely false. We had the moose just like America.
When that was said I was scanning my brain for any recollection of a corgi in a suit because how could I have possibly missed that? Easy: it didn’t happen. 😂
"How would they know about american patriotism if they don't live in america?" Yeah, it's not like it's depicted everywhere in american pop culture and is one of the most stereotypical american traits.... no idea.
Probably more important is that the speech is supposed to be rousing, inspirational, and righteous, something the American flag and anthem might not be recognized for in certain areas of the world.
the world isn't american, in fact in most places america isn't important at all. get used to the idea that people don't have to know about your culture, that's what everyone has to get used to
"An audience who probably prefers their own country's animation anyway". You have no idea how much obsessed Japan is with Disney. If it makes sense for Disney to be overly dedicated to an audience, it is Japan haha.
From what I understand, a lot of early anime and some common anime art styles were heavily inspired by certain Disney films, so it would make sense that Disney is popular there.
Oddly enough western fans of Japanese animation, hate it when they change something to be "more relatable" to us. We like the original jokes and such, learning why it's funny in Japan is fun, and helps us learn more about the people and culture that made the animation we love so much.
I think its important to understand the target demographic for both pieces of media: Where Anime is almost always made with Japanese teens in mind, Disney movies are not. Disney movies are directed towards young kids who haven't grown enough to explore new cultures, so in an effort to make them feel included, it makes sense that they change details in their films based on location. In contrast, Anime and Manga are heavily based on Japan and Japanese themes. Its a massive part of the culture that we don't quite have here in the west which is also probably why so many people like it (myself included).
"that's some dedication for a country that probably prefers their own animation anyway." Are you absolutely insane? Disney is HUGE here. The market is utterly, astoundingly gigantic in Japan.
I was born in '94 and pretty much grew up with the internet, but my bedside lamp was a globe. I still have it, even though the borders on it are outdated now.
I found that cultural difference amusing because of course I had a globe, plenty of kids I knew growing up had globes. I’m not from the USA so it’s a pretty foreign concept to me and probably plenty of others that having a national flag in your room is more common than a globe. Not a judgement, just a cultural difference
I guess it’s more of that undefinable “American Patriotism”. Like someone else mentioned, globes were rather popular with 90s kids when it took AOL upwards 20 min to load up the internet, I promise you after waiting that long, no one is wasting time looking up maps. But I am an American, so I can comment that as a young nation, we take pride in our flag and what it represents. Also capitalism is practically the real main religion so you would be surprised at what and where we have our flag flying...
Probably because Andy was an American child in an era where the Internet wasn't very popular, and it was very culturally normal for kids to have American Flags in their bedrooms, while they'd have a globe for reference points in School? Or are many of you on here so culturally inept, that you don't know anything about America prior to the Internet?
@@halcionkoenig243 I was born in the early 80's and can't recall a single person I know having an American flag in their house, much less their room. I knew some military families with service plaques that had flag insignias ON them, but no actual flags. Very common to see flags flying in the front yard or on the porch, though. It wouldn't necessarily be considered weird, but I'm not sure if something can be designated as "very culturally normal" if there aren't many examples of anyone that actually did that. I'm not sure what the arrival of the internet has to do with it, either. I think you'd be way more likely to see that during the Bush administration (after 9-11) than before the internet. Now globes? Yeah, I had one, my brother had one, most of my friends had one, globes were WAY more common. Are you sure that YOU know anything about the country before the internet? ;)
This is the most USA video I've seen this week: "How can you understand USA patriotism if you don't live here?" "kind of a big cat?" "Soccer, or that other name, football, as it's called in some other countries" "How can you prefer soccer over hockey? Isn't that just chase a ball?" "That's some dedication for an audience who probably prefers their own country's animation anyway" And don't make me start with he talking about green peppers as it was spicy food lol
One of the many things i love about Japan is that people of all ages love cute stuff, cute kids and cute characters over there. Here in the west i think the only cute thing that adults can enjoy without being seen as a weirdo are animal videos on youtube.
In spanish, Dory's song "just keep swimming" is "nadaremos", which means the same, but also sounds like "we will do nothing". It gives her such a philosophical twist that I loved as a child.
"That's some dedication for an audience who probably prefers their own country's animation anyway." Ho ho boy, you're way off the mark here! Disney and Pixar are MASSIVE in Japan. Whenever I ask my students if they prefer Disney or Ghibli, I'd say 70% of the time, they prefer Disney. Disney-themed stationary is also MUCH more popular than Ghibli too.
Disney is massive in Japan, but that doesn’t make it bigger than its own animations, most of my Japanese friends love Disney, but admit they prefer One Piece, Evangelion, ghibli etc.
Irony is that the anime "style" (it's completely inaccurate to call it that, but for brevity's sake) that we enjoy today wouldn't be what it is without Disney's cartoons and movies. It was a huge influence on japanese animators in the mid-40s and 50s.
If I had to guess I think the main reason Minty Zaki was changed is that the reference wouldn't click with Japanese people. First of all because name order is different. He is Miyazaki Hayao in Japan, with surname coming first. Second of all because the name Miyazaki is represented by kanji which are pronounced differently in different contexts. 宮崎 is read as Miyazaki, but just 崎 is Misaki. Third of all, Hayao Miyazaki is the only famous person with the last name Miyazaki famous in the west, there are many people named Miyazaki and in fact there is a Miyazaki prefecture in Japan. All in all, it's like if a Japanese movie had a character named Mike Cole and thought westerners would perceive it as a reference to Michael Eisner. It would go over absolutely everyone's heads.
There seems to be more sensitivity about references to other IP, characters, or people in Japan. For example, the first episode of "Osomatsu-san" was removed from streaming services and not released for home video - because it parodied/referenced a bunch of other anime and/or manga. Also when "Gundam" is spoken about in Lucky Star, it's censored... It's a little weird, but it's a comedy so it's kind of fitting to be quirky.
I’m japanese and I’m pretty sure it’s mainly the third reason. I don’t think many people would understand that it’s a reference to that specific person, if a reference at all, since it’s just a common name and because there are lots of other names that are similar to it. Also, I don’t think that most japanese people would even notice that it isn’t a typical English name. Most people don’t know common foreign names, so they would probably think that zaki is just another name and they put minty in front of it to make it cute.
@Ariel Isabela it is called puck or something like that. dont believe the other guy i have seen so many people going crazy over some unimportant thing like calling the hockey puck as it was supposed to be.
What do you mean why Andy had a globe in his freaking room, when i was a kid my parent had one and i wanted one for my room decoration. Those things are just effing cool even from a kid's perspective. And they are fun to play with too :P
I watched Zootopia in the UK - or rather, Zootropolis as it's called here. We did not have a corgi, we had the moose. Weird that you mentioned the fake corgi but not the name change...?
Kyatis the name change is because we already have a band with the name Zootopia so it would have been copyrighted! And I thought the same thing. Don’t remember any corgis.
It's on Reddit actually - corgi was eventually cut, so it was just a rumor. It actually seems like the Zootopia doesn't have dogs, at all, as they are human-bred. There's also no forest cats present, only big cats.
I mean have you ever seen an english dubbed Miyazaki movie? Disney does the localization and its usually phenomenal. You always lose something when you translate but they get really high caliber talent
dubbing companies are just that. dubbing companies. they get in trouble with the anime's directors because they cange it too much. there's a video on why they don't lip sync the anime people to english here on youtube somewhere.
@@Maxime_K-G i saw that movie as a kid. The part with Buzz' speech is unchanged and i understood it no problem. Probably because i was a kid and not a retard
7:39 "You have to wonder why Andy had a globe in his room. Is that really a thing most kids just have?" If American kids don't, then I guess we might have gotten one step closer as for the reason to Americans poor world geography knowledge. Give your kid a globe, Americans!
Definitely had a small globe in my childhood bedroom and my mom had a large one. Not weird lol. Someone’s parents clearly didn’t try to teach him about countries and cities. We had world map placemats too 😂
For what it's worth, the video is wrong about why they changed it. It's not because other countries wouldn't understand American patriotism, but because it's a reference to a famous speech from the movie Patton. If you haven't seen that movie before (which likely most non-Americans haven't), the scene loses some of its meaning.
@@mormonyakuza3412 Ahh, thank you! I assumed it was G.I. Joe or the generic american flag waving in the background speech. I haven't seen Patton and didn't realize that's a very specific reference. Which... now that I think about it, it might have been one of my grandfather's favorites, so thank you twice over. I miss him.
@@groovyhoovy9793 I agree, I believe even the fact that others blame it souly on all America as a whole are being just as ignorant as the people they are pinning the blame on.
I'm not saying seven year old kids from the other side of the world wouldn't understand it. But a globe would feel more relatable to them than the flag and anthem from some foreign country.
JohnMetal91 mine was from before the fall of the USSR, so there were some changes that happened in my lifetime that didn’t show in the globe. We got a newer one when I started studying geography, but can anybody can actually remember all the former Soviet Bloc countries separately anyway?
"How can you understand American patriotism if you don't live in America?" Oh, America. We know you better than you think we do. and we're laughing at you behind your back.
@@SiwanBouss That makes sense, I was just trying to make a joke. 😂 Football is the name of sports in other places and we took the name and changed the sport, while calling "real football" soccer.
"Weird change for a country that probably prefers its own animation" Not really. Disney is more popular than anime, even in japan. Never underestimate Disney or the surprising disdain that many japanese have for otakus
@@glegos2281 Well they like Old 2D disney and disney princesses like frozen and Disney mega-monopoly who literally went unchallenged for a good part of the 20th century since most of the animation houses got wrecked by world war II or where stuck in some totalitarian communist hell hole with no freedom to produce cartoon . Disney also has more money than a small country just for Entertainment. . and stopped making the kinda Disney cartoon the japanese like in the 90s . They definitely love disney princesses , Princesses , and Character like elena and feminine warrior princesses in flowery gowns are a staple of a lot of japanese animations . Anime look was built on top of disney big eyed cuteness of disney princesses . New disney ? I am not so sure they care that , Toy story 4 Definately got it asss beaten by One Piece Movies sale in japan .And I don't particular think they care about Disney live actions or Pixar-disney. . If they stop making those 2D cartoon and princesses the japanese love they'll lose their market share in japan
"Soccer or football, where chasing a ball around is more exciting than hockey for some reason?" And what do you do with the hockey pucks in hockey exactly?
"The part where chasing a ball around Is more exciting than hockey for some reason" yeah m8 chasing a flat can on ice with sticks is definitely more exciting
Oh but it is they have fist fights. Takes more skill to play hockey. Have to skate, use a stick, chase a puck, and be ready for a fight. Soccer is just men playing with each others balls
hilarious how u made this whole video abt how great it is to be understanding of other cultures and then failed to do your own research and missed the mark so many times......
Her original dark skin probably was too like the Ganguro fashion trend which is a rebellious trend by nature. For those who don't know of the trend the change could be perceived as racist. I could see the narrator wanting to avoid implying they did it for racist reasons because no one was aware of ganguro fashion. (And connecting cultural associations with pale skin that have nothing to do with white people.) Of course thats just what I thought when I seen it wasn't mentioned.
Hockey in some counries like Italy is ignored.... i didn't know about its existence till i was 10y old more or less... while football is huge. Like families are split in 2 during a derby
‘Missed jokes’ That’s why I basically watch everything in English even though it’s not my first language. There are so many jokes revolving the English language that are literally impossible to translate them to Spanish.
You've literally never heard the word ratatouille before, have you? :P Edit: Also, the purpose of having a single international version isn't anything to do with it being more or less work for the translation team - translating individual phrases is trivial. The reason for it is rendering time. Each different version needs to be rendered separately, which is a huge investment of time (and money).
“How can you understand American patriotism if you don’t live in America?” Not American but I can understand it easily. How can you not understand something so simple? It's just a pride for your country and being proud of who you are. Even if you're not American, you can easily understand them by their stereotype. And yes, we're talking about the overblown ego, self-centered and self-righteous attitude, as if you're the center of the world.
Yeah, that's why you and millions of people spend too much time and pay too much attention to so many things Americans. If America and Americans are not the center and the number one then how the hell millions of people around the world still using American's inventions and still pay too much attention to almost everything relating to America and Americans? Maybe you people should stop using their inventions and paying less attention to everything relating to America and Americans.
Just so people know most of the time if they say "English version" they actually mean the American version (this might include Canada but I'm not sure)

Localizing for understandability is fine, but I don't really agree with changing things for "cultural sensibilities". It prevents people from broadening their perspectives. And really, people from other countries won't understand american patriotism? It's like *the* point of satire about americans. I'm not a native english speaker, but I'm perfectly fluent and prefer to watch films in their original language. That includes watching english-speaking films in english, french films in french, and so on. So to me, who understands the english puns, knowing about the changes feels demeaning. I want to experience works as they were intended.
I really only agree on the last part. I, too, do not have English as my mother tongue. And I'm quite sure no one is "perfectly fluent", only fluent. Correct me if I'm wrong on that part, but I really rather not correct my belief on that. I agree on the "watching films in their original language" part, because it gives me chances to see how fluent I've become. I agree on the "cultural sensibility" part, because it seems interesting, and it makes Disney and Pixar seem dedicated to their audience. I respect your opinion, so I hope you'll be alright with me spreading mine.
Additionally, there are two "Disney" studios involved here. Walt's original animation studio (founded in 1923) made _Zootopia_ and _Wreck-It Ralph_ , but the _Planes_ movies were made by a different studio called Disneytoon Studios (now defunct).
