Yeah...Unfortunately alot of pixelart enthusiasts mistake bashing for critique, closing many newbies creativity in a little box instead of encouraging them to explore their own style. Glad to see this channel is different.
You're right! I was trying to go for a translucent look. But he is also right! I do tend to AA a lot on my bigger works because I have an irresistible urge to blend 😂 you can check out my other stuff at Instagram.com/kristencatpixels 💕
@Luke Griffiths Not really, he probably saw the AA and ran with it as a chance to teach something. If he were more not reviewing probably would have noticed.
I'd like to send what I tried with super mario sprites but it's been 3 years since you uploaded this video lol. You explain stuff like eli5 which is super useful for people like me who didn't have art background or experience.
The first one is not anti-aliasing, it is simply that the blouse is transparent, and you can realize that because only the blouse has that effect, which by the way is very well achieved. It gives texture without the use of exaggerated shadows and that is difficult in pixelart
@5:40 Absolutely GOLD game dev advice. Perhaps one of the most overlooked aspects of game dev for by indie developers, is how/when and how/when not to draw attention to certain visual aspects of a scene. A++ advice Pete.
Man, you're awesome! I've been watching a lot of pixelart tutorials and your channel is the best one I've seen! I have a "little" thing to ask: could you make a tutorial about character animation? I never found one really good and complete as I'm sure you would do.

A good tip that I learnt from an artist about lineart is that if your hand can theoretically wrap over, under or around an edge, make the line thicker aka black outline.
8:05 HE IS RUINING IT 8:09 OOOOH magic :D Isnt it amazing how your brain just "clicks" to re-interpret something on a split second? Suddenly it becomes more real.
I started watching pixel art videos just 2 days ago and I just realised how many awesome people this community has. I'm subbed to you and I hope you keep doing these kind of videos.
Clipping the timeline to the right side introduces a whole new dimension to me! thanks for this one! can't believe it even took me 5 mins to realise this.
I just started pixel and I follow your pixel art tutorial basics. As a practice I created a bench. And the bench before you modify it was the same thing I did and It does not look right. Its hard for first timer to draw something where it has depth. Sure it is easy to imagine but drawing it is so damn hard. Im glad you did this critique. Thanks
I really like this style os video where you give your opinion. Maybe when you talk about changing colors and contrast it would be nice if you actually changed the colors so we can see how much this would improve the art. Good job!
thank you so much for this video, I love how you teach by example, very easy to understand and improve with good job with the thumbnail it was an eye catcher because of the how much you improved it even though it was something really simple like a bench
Great video Pete! I actually linked your Channel on my newest Video, as I feel you are an amazing artist in the community! Thanks for your hard work and the tips you share!
1:30 thats not anti-aliasing tho, thats a transparent top she's wearing. You can see the pixels of her skin below is just 1 pixel (no AA), and the transparent top just outside the skin is also just 1 pixel, no AA.
bro, you're a legend. I am about to start my first pixel art endeavour. I too will be developing a game. I definitely will submit some work for critique. Your videos are super helpful. Thanks for all you do! mad love
Lots of helpful tips! I'm working on an overworld map and trying to figure out how to get the mountains looking right - I would love to see you elaborate more on your mountain drawing techniques and maybe go into different sizes and different styles like you did with the trees.
I don’t think newer artist know it’s all about trying to make your object appear 3D forget trying to make the object look like what you think the shape is it’s about making that shape appear to have form and pop in 3D it’s pretty hard.
Hi, there. I like this tutorial very much. Can I repost it to Bilibili(a Website like RU-vid in China)? I really want more people to watch this video tutorial !
Nice video! I could not submit anything in time, but maybe there will be another one of those? Might give the contest a shot as well, even tho i'm not that great of an artist. keep up the quality videos, love watching them.
For the first piece, it mostly lack of contrast. Contrast will not remove the smoothness of the piece, it will make each element pop out better visually. Contrast still exist in pastel colors, as contrary to what some elitists would claim... Side note: About the "outline everything" problem alot of beginners have, it often come from how much pixel communities bash anyone "not respecting limitations" even on good pieces of pixelart. Beginners needs freedom to explore their style and find their own, you can't realise what a specific limited style gives you if you don't even know why you're limiting yourself. That's how we end up with low contrast, low color count, usually too small to explore interesting shapes, and frustration. Heck, some guys draw better than me and don't even know what an analogous color sheme is, stuck in boring "same hue shades" because they were taught to limit themselves to this point of *not even trying* to mix hues. A red's a red and can't possibly use purples or oranges shades in their mind, closed by other people constant reminder of that if you're not limiting yourself you're "cheating". Yes I'm a salty artist who's exausted by how people view pixelart. Pieces being rejected because "too complex" or using "too many colors" (not as 50 shades per color but having a background and different objects using other color palettes) are ust a sign of jealousy. On a mockup piece, you don't count the overall colors to define limitations, you count colors per objects because the mockup isn't a single sprite, it's a collection of sprites. People need to understand how things works before bashing newbies and closing doors to their creativity. That's really harmful to aspiring artist's minds...
I'm pretty sure the first one isn't anti-aliased, it's meant to be a fine mesh top which you can see-through, hence why it's only present on the top area and why it's a purple colour.
can anyone help me with this issue. I fell im pretty good at pixel art however I can never seem to come up with my own ideas.... Even if I know exactly what I want to make I never know how to do it in terms of style, scale, theme, or anything like that. I can replicate a style perfectly and know how to use colours correctly however I can never pick a style in the first place or pick a colour palette(I literally can not pick colours to save my life). I feel like I have the skill to be amazing without any knowledge of making my own pixel art. PLEASE HELP, ANYONE.
Are u gonna accept more submissions? I recently got into pixelart as I’m planning on a game and would love to get some feedback. Great videos and explaining as always!:) Btw i wishlisted Dwerve, looks real cool
