@@daniilspiridonov That's some good arguments. Picotron just released do, and good software is still good software even if close sourced I don't boycott based on that but I do support open source software.

from the 'workspace' folder, upper left corner, click-hold and go down to 'about', you'll see all of the directories in use there, and can use Eclipse or whatever from that point

i'd be more grateful as well if the resolution was 4 times higher and not in 4:3. you do need a lot of screen real estate when coding and the fact that the font used in the coding editor is _that_ big is not helping a whole lot EDIT: now that i look at it, i dont think its even 4:3..

Ever heard of pico8? The resolution is purposefully small to make pixel games. It's not a gimmick, it's baked into the design.

@@najwan3672 The resolution of the os is 256 by 280, but games are customizable to resolutions up to 512 by 480. See docs.pixelvision8.com/rendering/thescreen

Yes you can export music as .wav files. When you do they appear at the file location C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\PixelVision8\Workspace\ then in the folder with your project name go to the file wavs\songs\

you should be able to click the option to flag it as a false positive. Windows complained about it too, but Bullguard (what I'm currently using as AV) didn't care.

it should be. the 'overwriting files' is a common warning most installers give. it doesn't touch anything sensitive as far as I could tell when I installed it.

Nah, there have been a few programming style games for consoles, but generally I've avoided covering them. Just beyond the cusp of this channel, plus I'm not really setup for capturing footage etc

I did my first Dreams dive yesterday and oh it's great to work with, for someone who's not a programmer. ¡Looks like a toy for casual creation but behind it there's such a great software! The logic pieces still are a bit scary, but there's already a lot of community guides and tutorials, apart from Media Molecule's

UE Blueprints is easy to learn onlh a little more complicatex than dreams to get started. Iteration time is still slower but it still pretty easy to get started for people with zero coding knowledge.

@@CamberGreber with blueprint you need to know what a variable is and what it's for. With dreams you don't. It's a lot user friendly than blueprint and bolt.

As someone who's used Game Maker (from version 5.3 to version 8, but Studio and Studio 2 also apply here): Visual programming is perfectly useable when it compiles to actual code. This is the case with the 'drag and drop' visual code system in modern Game Maker, so you can make a game purely out of drag-and-drop and expect it to be decently quick. "Blueprints" in UE4 and Unity's equivalent are the same way, as well as the shader-building tools in most modern engines. However, writing script directly is ALWAYS faster once you get the hang of it, both in terms of writing the code, and in terms of how fast that code will run. GML is a perfectly decent scripting language to learn on, especially for 2D work, which is something Game Maker does perfectly fine. Don't use GMS for 3D, though, therein lies misery and pain.

Well, the editor/os itself is a game too, it's made in the same way you would make any other Lua game with the console.

the main feature as far as I can tell is just everything being integrated and self-contained. And the ability to select different limitations, on either sound, GPU, or rom size.

I think that it (performance wise) literally just got implemented for 0.9.8 for when it comes out: github.com/PixelVision8/Bounties/issues/3#issuecomment-633733148 Of course, you can use the Linux build right now, but it's pretty slow. I've never used Linux before so I don't fully know how it works :P

i think the intention was "for a limited time" question is if the .zip version enforces this. i have no doubt the installed one does. i also don't like the "sign-up to use/download this" model... the one thing about this particular 'limited time' is us humans don't really have any control over it. enough of our leaders screwed-up when there was a real chance to control the spread. so, who knows how long this will go on.

Schwipsy I think the free download is on the website for a limited time. After that he will probably take it down and then bring out new tools, so this version gets outdated.

@@DFX2KX i somewhat would expect the "planned obsolescence" model. at least a tool like this can't become fully obsolete with anything short of DRM. [or a devastating security exploit] something i'm curious about is how it says you can pick the CPU of the virtual machine. so does that mean the game program is actually machine code for the chosen processor? i'll admit that is pretty cool. i like the idea of more 'low-level' VMs, might make one myself...someday... these fantasy consoles are pretty neat, but i don't see myself investing time beyond playing games made for them. currently, at least...

@@ETXAlienRobot201 actually the chips are nothing more than custom presets of limited system specs. Pixel Vision 8 always runs the same, but the chips determine (they can even be edited directly) how free or how limited program ram is, colors per sprite, maximum songs, etc.

You could always try Gameboy assembly.

@@SkankinMoshPit nes and snes aren't elegant systems, I hate program for them, but I did Genesis too. Make your system is not a trivial task it's why I asked if anyone knew a project like this.

No, it just mimics the limitations of actual hardware without requiring assembly language programming to get the nicer FX out of them. Think of it not as emulator but simulator...it's not bytecode accurate, but limitations accurate.

Hmmm, not sure how to answer that. It's free and your license remains free after the free period expires. It wont remain free forever though. So... yes/no, depending on how you phrase your question

@@masterneme im guessing that you can download it for free, for now. If you have downloaded it while it was free, you can keep using the pro tools. But you cannot update or download new versions of the program for free.

It's an self-contained, idegrated-development-enviroment for retro-style games, which takes the form of a virtual game console, and an OS to write the assets. You can choose to limit the power of the 'console' in various ways to challenge yourself, such as smaller carts, less graphical power, more limited sound, ect.

To an extent, yes. You can limit total game size (cart size), GPU power (sprite/tilemap count) and sound limitations. I THINK cart size affects ram size as well. It's not quite as brutally limiting as traditional hardware, but you don't have to learn Assembly. Someone might start here and then go to actual hardware later.

There is an export option to output an exe file. My main complaint is it doesn't output to web

The algo can't tell shitty content from neutral discussion or even mentioning the topics, so it seems to default to demonetizing every video that even fits the filter remotely
