I wish that I had discovered your videos on Pixinsight, months ago and not just in the past 24 hours. Your videos are absolutely wonderful, with excellent information, clarity and delivered with great communication skill and at the right pace. Absolute magic, thank you.

Hi Sascha, I just wanted to let you know that I have watched many GHS, RU-vid videos to try and gain a better understanding of how to use the tool. I found your video very enlightening, easy to understand, and I really learned a lot from it. It wasn’t really clear to me how to use the intensity tool until I saw your video. The nine, five, and three settings work very well. Thanks for the instruction. Keep up the good work!

Phenomenal - thank you so much for this clear explanation. Also, your joke about RC astro releasing "Stretch Xterminator" was hysterical - as a huge fan of his products, I hope your comment was a prediction

Amazing stretch! Thanks for the tutorial! I have never managed a stretch where I didn't think a linear to darken the shadows was essential. ❤

My success with this tool has been limited ever since it came out as a script. I have about a 50% success rate getting something I like. I have watched every tutorial I can find on GHS ever since, but yours is the first that really helped--all in less than 15 minutes! Thank you for the clear tutorial.

Great tutorial as always. I have an audio related feedback for you. It seems that you record your voice with a stereo microphone. For voiceovers, this is kind of distracting, especially on headphones if the voice is not centered and moving around from left to right. My suggestion is to convert the stereo audio channel to mono. Premiere Pro: Right Click on Modify > Audio Channels > Clip Channel Format > Mono In Final Cut: Click on the Audio Clip in Inspector and select the Stereo Dropdown and select Dual Mono iMovie does not have an inbuilt option, but exporting the audio in audacity as mono should do the trick.

I kind of agree. Funny enough once the process was introduced the Script started crashing on my computer, so I was kind of forced to make the change. But I also see no benefit of the process vs. the script.

Nice job Sascha. Just to clear something up though, both the STF and HT are nonlinear stretches not linear (well they can be linear if you only adjust shadows and highlights sliders), harmonic to be exact, although if I recall they also does one or two other things in the background as well. You can emulate HT by just leaving the symmetry point 0, local intensity at 1 and then just using the stretch factor slider.
@viewintospace
@viewintospace Год назад
Yes, from a strictly mathematical point of view you are right.

I've been wrestling with GHS for about a week now, and I'm largely giving up - for me it's just too difficult to achieve consistently good results on dim targets. For nice bright emission nebulae; great - but for dark nebulae or feint dust clouds it's just a headache. For those targets I have much better results just using autostretch and then adjusting curves. But in a more general sense I jus't don't really see how GHS produces qualitatively better results than autostretch + curves. More control; yes - but better quality? I'm not convinced. What do you think?

Great Tutorial. I have a question. I have been using the EZ soft stretch prior to channel combination and when I try to do the combination before stretching so I can run StarXterminator my combination is completely green. I've tried another pass of ABE set to subtraction and it helps a little but everything is still green. SCNR also helps a little but not enough to get a color balanced starless image to run GHS. Wat am I missing?
@viewintospace
@viewintospace Год назад
Try after the channel combination to open the STF process and do an unlinked autostretch (click the chain icon and then the nuclear icon). That might so the trick.

In what cases do you recommend this kind of stretch? Or does it work good for any data?
@viewintospace
@viewintospace Год назад
I recommend this as the default stretch for everything. With the exception of RGB stars, where I recommend first a slight stretch with ArcSinh (to accentuate the star colors), and then finish stretching with GHS.
@willemwitteveen8374
@willemwitteveen8374 Год назад
Nice. Do you stretch the stars the same way or do you use another method?
@viewintospace
@viewintospace Год назад
For stars I use the ArcSinh Stretch combined with GHS - you can see that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uw_88wD2NWM.html

Thank you so much for the video. Do you remove stars (StarXterminator or Starnet2) before GHS?
@viewintospace
@viewintospace Год назад
Yes, by alll means! On one side it give the better results of the star removal when doing it in linear, and on the other side it gives the better results of stretching stars separately, and also with the help on ArcSinh Stretch. Have a look here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uw_88wD2NWM.html

@viewintospace
@viewintospace Год назад
Did you zoom in and set the symmetry point and then zoom out again?
@Oamaruastro
@Oamaruastro Год назад
Thank you for this. So when you do GHS you do it on a combined colour image, rather than on the individual channels? I have been doing it on the channels, then making sure they have relatively similar histograms, then I combine them. It's a bit more work, so if it's not really necessary, it would surely simplify my routine a bit.
@viewintospace
@viewintospace Год назад
Before BXT you had both options - and both have their pros and cons, but at least when you use BXT you have to stretch the combined image as BXT should be applied to a color image before stretching.
