In this Pixinsight Tutorial, I will be showing you my favorite noise reduction technique that I learned from astrophotographer, Jon Rista.
*MISTAKE CORRECTION- In the video, I give you the incorrect settings for MMT. You can see the correcting settings in this video: • Pixinsight Workflow Tu...
Getting started with Pixinsight can be daunting at first, but one of the most important techniques to learn early on is how to denoise your images properly.
This technique will help you reduce the noise in your images before you apply a permanent stretch. Noise reduction in the linear state is important because stretching a noisy image will only make that noise worse and harder to remove later on.
You can find an more in-depth article about these techniques on Jon Rista's website here:

Hi Solito, thanks for you effort doing this video but... beside the inversion of MMT settings, I think you show basically no effects overall. I'd suggest to redo this video, so that beginners can actually see the method applied and the results it produces, which can be better than those shown here. Second trial will be better!

You're right. I talked about this with someone else in one of the other comments. It was a combination of not enough zoom to see a difference, RU-vid video compression, and I also did the MMT noise reduction backwards like an idiot. In my Sombrero Galaxy processing tutorial video, I showed the correct way to do it. Clear Skies man!

I'd like to thank you for this video I just started using PI and I tried processing an image from last year and this video really helped me get rid of the noise Mike

Glad it helped! I do want to note that I had some of the settings for MMT reversed. There's a link in the description that leads to a section of my Sombrero Galaxy processing video that shows the best settings for MMT.

Actually blinking backwards and forwards I saw no difference 😩 What should I have seen?

Newb here - what step am I missing that all this work actually stretches and impacts the image? I've gone through 2x now step by step but my export to tif is original image, so I'm missing a key step in actually stretching the image... Oh the pains of being new to PI. :) - Thanks!

TGV leaves blotch that MMT is used to correct. I've stopped using TGV and instead use a few different runs with MMT with varied settings and masks, and have been getting good results.
@ZoliroAstro
@ZoliroAstro 2 года назад
I think I agree for the most part. TGV does a better job on OSC images than MMT when you need to remove chromatic noise, especially when you use the masks like I describe. On monochrome images with filters, I've been using only MMT, and saving TGV for after I've combined the master lights and stretched them. That's the thing I'm learning more and more though...there is no perfect workflow for all images. Every image is different, especially when you use different cameras and scopes, and some methods work on some images, and sometimes they don't.

Hi Aran. Is that what you did with the money you made selling me the AVX? Really looking forward to the workflow video Daniel.

I'm kinda dreading making it lol. When I start processing an image, I get into super focus mode, so I'm gonna have to make myself think through how I'm going to explain everything and make a watchable video. 😅

wesleyson21 Oh hi! How are you doing with the Avx? I got an edge with the money i got from the avx and 8 sct, then sold my 294mc to get the 294mm

@@astrocarpets3896 It's working pretty well but I'm having problems with guiding in Dec especially after a meridian flip. I think it's because my PA is off by about 19 arc min which isn't great. I just need to figure out the PA tool in EKOS to get a better alignment.

MISTAKE CORRECTION! In the video I show you the wrong settings for MMT. I reversed the thresholds settings for some reason. Must have been a brain fart lol! You can see the correct settings for MMT here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yTHUb-WbQDA.html

Topaz De Noise does a fantastic job at removing noise! It works FAR better than this HUGE complicated process.....

Hello, at 15:12, you claim that the "color noise is pretty much gone". But I can plainly see it is *still* there ?!? To my eye it is *barely* less than the original, I can plainly see colored blotches etc... I'm not trying to prove you wrong or to find fault in a gratuitous manner. I really think my monitor is set correctly... how can this be ?
@ZoliroAstro
@ZoliroAstro 3 года назад
Two things on this...First, I had a comment on another one of my tutorial videos where the commenter said that they had a hard time seeing the difference in some of the noise adjustments I made. He said he thinks it might be because I wasn't zoomed in close enough to see the difference in noise, especially after the video is compressed by RU-vid after I upload. That makes sense, because when I watch certain parts of my tutorial videos on RU-vid vs the original file on my computer, I can tell that it's harder to see the difference on the actual RU-vid video. The second thing is that I did the threshold layers backwards in this tutorial. I've used this denoising technique many times, on many different images, and for some stupid reason I did the threshold layers backwards like an idiot in this tutorial lol. In this video at 13:32, I put a card link that says "MISTAKE CORRECTION FOR MMT" which links to another one of my tutorial videos in which I show the correct way to set the layer thresholds. I also added a section detailing my mistake in the video description with the link as well. Unfortunately, the grey card link in this video blends in really well with Pixinsight's grey upper menu bar and is easily missed. You used to be able to add text to a video after uploading using RU-vid's Editor, but for some stupid reason, RU-vid decided to remove that feature from the Editor. I think being able to add text to the video after the fact would have made it so much easier for me to be able to tell people I made a mistake. Anyways, I'm really sorry about that. FWIW, the chrominance noise reduction in TGV and MMT denoise is very subtle anyways. In my other video in which I show the proper settings, I still have a hard time seeing the difference on the RU-vid video, so I think the other comment was right. I really need to either zoom in more in Pixinsight, or zoom in on the preview window in editing so everyone cane see the difference better.
