I've been thinking about it for five minutes, haha. It is the single most accurate comedy sketch I've ever seen. The cringe-inducing "sexy" talk, the guilt trip, the former ladies man and badass who now couldn't tie his own shoes without her help...I can't even really say it's "funny," but, my god, is it real. Like I said above, only thing it's missing is a 15yo boy in a Floyd shirt going "Don't you see what she's doing?? You're all really gonna fall for this again?", his siblings telling him to stop, the dad getting mad at him for upsetting her further...oh my god. I feel traumatized by this sketch haha.

My mum was exactly like this when I was younger, but she worked really hard on her mental health and communication skills and actually changed over time. I was amazed! She had a really difficult upbringing and a ton of baggage from her own parents... our whole family is so much closer now, and we've had some awesome healing conversations. She's such an impressive, humble person and I respect her so much.
@Jack-cd2zu
@Jack-cd2zu 4 года назад
Interesting to see a different story. How did she manage to do it? Why did she decide to change in the first place?
@shockofthenew
@shockofthenew 4 года назад
@@Jack-cd2zu Well it's a long story, oh boy.. but maybe this will help someone else who’s struggling so here goes… So my mum had a super traumatic upbringing with controlling, critical, unloving parents who all-but cut her out of their lives at 18, naturally leaving her with a lot of mental health issues. I didn't learn about this until I was an adult, but it certainly explains a lot! At heart she's a wonderful person and was very caring to me growing up, but she would get triggered at the slightest thing. She was prone to severe anxiety attacks that overwhelmed anyone else's feelings, and would constantly assume that other people didn't like or respect her - even her family - picking up on any tiny hint of 'tone' in how we spoke or acted and becoming hurt and defensive. It was like dealing with two different people depending on whether or not she was in 'triggered mode', and because she was always passive-aggressive and martyr-like rather than just plain aggressive, that made me feel guilty and want to protect her, even if I was upset and frustrated myself. Because her reasoning in these times was so bizarre and her reactions could be so extreme, I sometimes wondered if she was purposefully acting like that to manipulate us (although I know now that wasn’t true). I came to resent her in some ways, but she was so good to me the rest of the time that we remained close. Why things changed: 1. My mum is a genuinely good person who doesn't want to hurt others. It was hard for her to see outside her disordered thinking at first, but when she understood the problem she really wanted to change. 2. My parents have a really, really great relationship with a lot of love and understanding. My dad was always very patient with my mum because he knew how much she'd struggled (she had much more severe issues when they were first together). But once my brother and I arrived, I think he saw that some stuff he'd learned to 'put up with' was affecting us, and especially as kids we didn’t have the resources to cope with it. How things changed: Firstly my dad knew my mum deeply and trusted she didn't intend to hurt anyone. He understood the root of her behaviour was insecurity, so he would consistently reassure her she was loved and respected. My parents committed to always 'talk things out' no matter how long it took, until everyone felt satisfied with the conclusion. Sometimes when my mum was acting irrationally my dad would talk to my brother and I separately and explain she was struggling but it wasn't our fault. I give him huge credit for managing to balance a difficult issue like that while making it clear how much he respected her. Having said that he had issues of his own, and she afforded him the same patience and respect in return. As I got older we started having ‘family meetings’ once a week where anyone was allowed to air out something that was bothering them and we all had to talk it through. The kids were treated as an equal part of this conversation and we were allowed to respectfully bring up issues with our parents. Sometimes that was uncomfortable, but it was ultimately what saved us. Slowly we started to talk through my mum’s ’issues’ in that kind of non-threatening environment. She would get upset at first because we were “ganging up on her” but we kept it really calm and reminded her we were bringing this up because we loved her and wanted a better relationship. Over time she came to accept she had a problem, and once she was outside of a situation she could look back and admit she over-reacted. We came up with lots of methods to help divert triggering situations - we had an agreement to stop a conversation if things were getting too intense and take a 5 minute breather. We got better at catching things before they blew up. We took time to break conversations down logically and give everyone a fair chance to speak. We practiced listening skills. And we always came back to the statement “we love each other and we’re not trying to hurt each other” when things were going wrong. It definitely wasn't always smooth sailing... I'm condensing 20-30 years of progress into a couple of paragraphs here. But the key factors were: love, compassion, honesty and communication.

Funny, that's my mom's go to line, but she says it when there's actually something wrong and doesn't want us to worry or fuss over her. I've joked that we're going to put the phrase on her tombstone in quotes.

Who else thought this was gonna be the reoccurring sketch where it’s really Walmart pizza and Bertuccis doesn’t actually exist?

I'm so happy it wasn't. There are some reoccurring sketches that work. That is not one of them.

They would have had Cecily in that sketch.

I don't believe that they can effectively pull that off without Adam Driver.

I thought it was gonna be the Olive Garden skit with the director (Beck) giving them weird instructions.

One of SNL's best sketches writen. Really funny, and true on some levels.

@@djmotise Yes, sadly it is.True and funny for some people. Maybe not all mom's, I'm not like that at all, but mine is sometimes. More so when we were younger, and all us kids were at home.
