Pizza and Pioneers: Uncovering the Ghost Town of Rowley’s Charm One Slice at a Time

The last Saturday night of every month (except December) is Pizza Night in the ghost town of Rowley, Alberta. Volunteers throw open the doors of Sam's Saloon and the community centre across the street and serve up hundreds of pizzas.
All the money raised from Pizza Night goes into supporting and maintaining the community. Rowley is not your typical ghost town. It's still inhabited by a handful of residents, some of the buildings are actually remnants of movies which were shot in the community, and then there are legitimate buildings from Rowley's pioneer days. It's part community, part theme park, part ghost town, and 100% fun.
In addition to the pizza festivities, we engage in a journey to Springwater School, one of the few stone schoolhouses on the Canadian prairies. We also embark on a quest to find the last resting place of Sam Leung, the legendary Sam of Sam's Saloon. It is said his spirit still haunts the building which housed his cafe and butcher shop from the 1940s through until 1968.
As always, thanks for coming along for the ride!

It sure is. I hope it doesn't get too big for its own good. I guess that's why they need to cap the number of pizzas they make, otherwise they could be there all night.

Well done Dan. It was our first trip to Rowley that was started with a conversation with Dale and Janice last Christmas. We were happy that you and Emily also came along, with my brother and sister-in-law, Sean and Jody also joining the group, We had fun and enjoyed our time together. We'll have to do it again.

I wish we could have made it out earlier. At least we made the best of the time we had.

Thnx again for sharing your travels. I used to buy grain for the Alberta wheat pool and it was such a nail into every town’s coffins when the elevators closed and the rail lines closed. Sad and a loss. I’m so glad to see Rowley still trying to stay alive. Great job everyone. The big blue house on the corner and the roof on the school look like great humanitarian projects. Once history is gone you’ll never get it back

You are so right. I had a summer job for the Wheat Pool back in 1993 or '94 in Enchant. Wish I had taken photos of our elevator and old fertilizer plant but film was expensive and the thoughts of them disappearing one day seemed so far-fetched.

Thanks! You need to make a trip out some time for a pizza night, especially if you end up buying a Boler.

Gosh it’s been at least eight years since I’ve sat in Sam’s Saloon enjoying a pizza and a wobbly pop. I guess I should do it again sometime.

Good video, interesting school. I remember our house in Bellingham, Wa. when i was a kid, it had a coal chute and an old coal burning furnace in the basement. It was kinda "creepy" down there. We're "enjoying" our 109f days here in Oregon. 🥵 Happy camping!!

The first time I visited the school I was too creeped out to go downstairs. Having a light and some "backup" people made my second visit easier.

Been there! Sam's. Is there still the 'angry signs' on one of the locals houses? That say in essence piss-off! Rowley is cool.

There are a few that have erected Private Property signs and one that says "Smile, you are on camera". With the number of people who visit the town, I'm not surprised they need signs to keep people from wandering into their yards.

Good one, mate. Never gone for pizza night, but I've visited a few times on a weekend when it's been really quiet. Need to get back there with my latest drone on a weekend, for some neat drone footage. :) It's a shame that the school has been removed from the protected heritage list. I need to get there for drone footage while it's still standing. Shame we're not keeping that one on the protected list :(

Yeah, the old school is hanging in there, but without support it will go downhill fast. Maybe we'll cross paths out there one day.

Wondering if there's a place that says that they were cremated?

That's a good question. I need to get digging into some records.
