Top marks for creativity! Absolutely ingenious. But I do worry for your Firebox as the front and back panels will be exposed to much more heat than with regular use. I'm sure you know all that and we're okay with it👍😎 the food sure looked good and you both keep good company!
Thank you! 🙏 You are right about being careful with heat on the front and back panels; we try to ensure it is never left alone (ie. always a kettle or food on top to take the heat) and keep it as a slower-burning fire for cooking purposes. As soon at the baking is done, it gets turned back upright so we can crank up the BTUs. Like any piece of equipment, it is important to know its limits. But we can assure you that dear #39 is still doing great and has no hinge, folding or panel issues. 👍 Whoever made these stoves, they are pretty darn tough!😜
Oooh yes! Think this is our favourite video too date. Not just the warmer vibes with the lack of snow, but wow that pizza looked scrummy! We had homemade pizza tonight, chilli, kale, sweetcorn and cheese. Making us hungry right before bed! Also, could watch you guys make fire all day, therapy 🍕❤👍☕ the folding style almost makes it a Calzoni (spelling, like a pizza pastry) stay safe and well, Ceri and Kat 🤗
Homemade pizza is the best!!! Mmm - yours sounds pretty scrumptious! Calzone-style makes it a little neater in the woods:) ‘Hope you are both doing well & having a great weekend! Cheers!! 🤗
Fantastic videos you two are producing, which I am enjoying the outdoor culinary creativity very much. With fast food restaurants, microwave meals, packaged ready to make meals and even backpacking freeze dried meals...people have forgotten how to slow down. Slowing down, taking your time, finding joy in the preparation and execution of cooking in the woods is very peaceful, therapeutic and rewarding.
🙏 Thank you for your kind words. We would agree wholeheartedly about slowing down , preparing good food and appreciating the process, especially when in the great outdoors. All the best!
Those pizzas look very very appetizing🤣🤣🤣. I really like that use of the Firebox .... Mine does not have those rods to make legs. I'll try it using the Tarp pegs.
Thanks bro! Keep in mind ! You want to protect your side panels , so small fires and always keep a pot full of water on top to take the heat . (Or cooking) ¡cuídete hombre!👍
Nice video, my friend! The cooking is delicious as well, making pizza outdorrs is realy the process that requires a lot of patience! Seems like it is pretty warm finally,? Take care and good luck!
Thank you for another great video. New subscriber and backpedaling through videos. Given that some of your meals are rather elaborate, do you "practice" at home before filming in the field? Thanks again-keep up the great work!
Hi Andrew, we actually don’t. We generally make what we tend to make at home. I’ve always cooked and I enjoy it. The kitchen is pretty much the only place in the house where I can fool around with a knife and not get too many questions 😊. Nancy always enjoyed baking. I focus more on cooking methods than actually following a recipe. I never really make the same exact meal twice. I kind of go with the flow. Nancy on the other hand as to follow a certain recipe, since it has to do with baking and desserts. Thanks a lot and take care!
@@KettleCamping Wow. Your talent comes through in the dishes you make. I also know the more ingredients there are to a dish, the more prep work and packing and more storage you need to account for. I do all the outside cooking (grill with meats and vegetables), but my wife does all the inside cooking. I know sometimes when my wife is in the middle of making something, I hear her say, “Oh no! I forgot to pick up …. when we were at the store last”, so I can only imagine the prep work that goes into the food detail when you are out on an adventure-no local stores to fall back on. Great videos guy!. I’m enjoying the places you take us and the cooking experience along the way!
Ahaha , I know what you mean! This sounds like our minestrone video that ended up being a “Vegan minestrone “ because I forgot the pancetta and cheese. 😊 Take care and thanks again for the nice comments!!
Howdy! Came over from Carl's Adventures. Awesome job on the pizza!👍😎 I can't say that I have ever seen a Firebox used that way. Pretty ingenious really. I may have to give it a try. I'm a huge fan of SAK's. What model are you using? I EDC the Vic Outrider when out in the woods. Subbed (cuz of the SAK 😉👍) and will check out the rest of your videos.
Hi! Pleased to make your cquaintance thanks to Carl, and especially as a fellow Victorinox fan. We do love our SAKs!! Don’t think there are many of our videos where one isn’t used in some way (the “where’s waldo?”feature😜). They pair perfectly with a firebox. Outrider is a very nice EDC. The one is this video is a modified Hercules with scales from the Sentinel (for the clip). Thanks again for joining us! Cheers!
@@KettleCamping ya the Outrider doesn't have the pliers that the Hercules does. I was going to buy a Hercules but upgrade to the Super Champ??? I think that's what its called. I found it for on sale at a very stupid price. I tried to use as a edc, but it's too big for a pocket carry in my opinion. Hey, if you get a chance, check out COOKnOUT. He lives on an island way up north in between Finland & Sweden. His cooking style is very much like yours.
How cool was that wit da firesticks! noice yob KC! Thanks. ...'n the missus just loves snippin' stuffs from the garden... ..and we never did get to measuring/making our own sauce(then on to dough) for perfect home made pizza. erm ~ my bad. cool beans x2. What's just a few ash when some brush their teeth with, and many prolly grabbed the beer with the ciggie butt in it? (-:
Closest I've come to such brainiack attack is cutting the legs on a Weber Smokey Joe so can be used on ground and lifted to set in a vintage type milk pail with top removed. (perfect height for Joe/ash in the can)
Glad you enjoyed it! Fresh-cut greens are pretty tasty straight from the garden. No problem with ashes at all actually... shook the fire a little before placing the pizza under and didn’t have a speck. The Firebox combustion is usually excellent because the airflow is so good. But regardless, as you say, some folks brush their teeth with it and probably have taken a swig or two with it in their beverage.😁
@@KettleCamping Btw, I got an update on some back ordered items(just two Trangias) at Firebox, and I replied with this video link to pass on to Steve. I'm surprised he didn't stop on by for Howdy yet. Four legs 'n wide open/side re-fueling+ is cool. lol, maybe he doesn't want to add another page to the instruction booklet? ~ How are them hinges holding up? Might be a tad hotter there vs vertical?
@@brianbartulis9709 Thank you very much, Brian! The hinges are doing great but we are definitely careful not to fully crank up the fire when in oven-mode because we don’t want to push the limits too much. Fireboxes can handle a lot though! Thanks, again!! 🙏
Love this vid! The first I've seen anyone use the firebox in this manner. I was expecting it to be more ashy than it was! Did you let the fire go for a bit so that the coals would form and keep smaller ash from falling down?
‘Glad you enjoyed it, Thomas! We had no problem with ashes at all - just shook the fire a little before we put the pizza under. The combustion of the Firebox is usually excellent, too. How are you doing? Fully healed? Have you had a chance to get out yourself yet?
@@KettleCamping yup fully recovered! I haven't had a chance to go fully out. I've been real busy with work and finishing up the degree that my work requires. Im planning a trip into the mountains beginning of next month to visit family.
Very original idea with cooking below the stove! Never seen that done before. I have cooked on top of this setup as a grill when I forgot to bring a grill plate with me. Doesn't some of the ash from the fire fall down on top of the pizza? That would be my only concern with this method. Though, maybe not big of an issue for you this time?
Glad you enjoyed it! We didn’t have any trouble with ash falling through. The combustion of the Firebox is really good. Thanks for watching 🙏 & Cheers!
Just a little shake of the fire before putting the pizza under and no problem. The size of the holes in the side Firebox aren’t very big and given that combustion is good, there is never all that much ash anyway. Thanks for watching!
Bravo,,,!!!!! Totally Creative,,,!!!! Quick question,,, what’s your Favorite, the best or a light Kettle,, that Y’all use or Recommend,,???? You should send that video to Steve,,@ Firebox. Joshua
Thanks so much, Joshua! Not that you could tell given how black they are (lol), our two kettles are an anodized aluminum GSI Halulite and a titanium Fire Maple - both are about 1 litre. Our criteria for an ideal backpacking kettle are the following: lightweight, largest possible opening at top, smallest / shortest spout (for easier packing) and a handle that has an indent or webbing so that it can be hung easily without slipping.
Using the Firebox on its side, is that something you came up with yourself, or is it made like that? Have you noticed the SAK saw getting dull after using it to make fire like this. I would worry the teeth of the saw could heat up quickly and get annealed when its covered with tree sap.
Yes, something we came up with. Just make sure it’s a small fire and keep a pot of water on top to take the heat and protect the side panels. I’ve been using the SAk on a regular basis for years and no issues. I just maintain it once in a while with small files. As for the blade, I sharpen and strop/ hone on a regular basis to keep a good edge. Good enough to cut through tomato skin with ease. (My test) thanks for commenting.! TC
I ran across this young girls Chanel, Where she made a pizza on the firebox stove. She used the 5” fire box stove in the regular stand up mode, using a combination of small grill plate covered with foil placed on top and then covered with the ash pan to put hot coals on for top heat. She used two fire sticks below to put the adjustable fire grate on, which is where she placed the pizza on from the wind damper side and then close the wind damper.
