*** I had it requested several time to show how I carved my coffee spoon. I figured this would be a great opportunity to do 2 videos in ! by testing out my new Pathfinder Knife Shop (CAMP COMPANION formerly L/S Carver) to do this job. I will show the process of making the scoop but also show the knife up close and give my impressions of it.

I like to carve two at once bowl to bowl. This leaves a handle at each end until you are ready to separate. You waste less wood. Good job. Good video.

Great Instruction--clear and well-organized. Possibly I have watched more spoon carving videos that you did to study for this one...but yours is as effective as most. I am in my 70's and it is only in the last couple of years that I have tried carving. One of my best projects was a coffee scoop carved from a dried butternut blank. Thanks for sharing.

Yep. I think he was looking right at it, but to do that without looking... Eeesh. I learned the hard way, as a general rule, if the sheath is on your belt or neck, keep your free hand AWAY from the sheath. There is no need for it to be there. If you are unsheathing a knife that’s not attached to you, grip at the bottom of the sheath and watch what you are doing. Of course with that strap on this sheath (beautiful sheath) you might end up cutting the strap if you didn’t hold it out of the way. Again, if you watch what you’re doing, it’s doable. Obviously.

I went back to watch that moment to self analyze. It probably looks more dangerous than it was. Although it wasn't visible on the video, I was watching my fingers as I did this. The way the sheath is made you have to pull the retaining strap back to remove the blade. When the blade comes out my hand is more than an inch behind the sheath and blade when the knife comes out. It is hard to tell the depth perception on the video. If you don't hold that strap back, the blade will contact and slice that upon removal. I genuinely appreciate your concern and the comment as I can sure make mistakes like anyone else. I think in this case it looked worse than it actually was. I appreciate your time to comment and interest to watch! Take care.

@@JohnSmith-gs4lw I agree. I have learned a few "hard lessons" along the way myself :) You are right in the design of this sheath, in that you have to hold that strap back to prevent damaging it with the blade but that is a good thing because it forces your hand to be an inch or more behind the plane the blade comes out on. Thanks for tuning in John.

Awesome video! Great job on that spoon bro. I made a nice set out of mesquite i carved wet because how hard mesquite is.. it turned out nice i think. I love neck knives but i usually put a connector on em so if it does get caught on something the connector will pop before the cord can strangle you..
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 4 года назад
That is always a good idea to have a break free mechanism I think on a lanyard. Although the chances are slim, it's always better safe than sorry. I bet the Mesquite turned out nice indeed! It is a beautiful wood. Unfortunately it isn't one I have had the opportunity to work with but maybe someday :) Thank you for your kind words brother! Take care.

Great video Matt. I just finished carving the first spoon that I am happy with. I used a peice of dried plum wood. What are your thoughts on using sycamore? I have access to a good supply of it but I'm not to sure how it would hold up.

This is great! Carving is something I haven't done before, but I'm really attracted it. I love beautiful wood. I have wood utensils that I love to use. I'm really looking forward to getting that spoon knife, the PKS Carver and getting started. This will be a great past time when I go camping and have spare time at night or whenever. I would much rather bring a couple tools and practice the craft of making something useful than reading a book. Don't get me wrong, I love books, because I love to learn. But I think carving will keep me more connected to nature while I'm out there in it. I love your little short handled coffee knife Matt! I definitely want to make myself one like that. I need to learn more about the different trees/wood in my local environment. There is Eucalyptus, various types of sumac. Are there any woods that would be toxic when coming into contact with food?

Hey friend 🙂 great job at carving. That knife is a little on the thick side for me for carving. Have you ever looked at Helvie or Drake knives for finishing? Very thin, small blades. They are super cheap also. I have a little helvie I paid 30 bucks for. It’s cuts look like glass and it’s really great for this scooping cuts around the bowl and handle. 🙂

i really dont like the mora spoon knives. they put a micro bevel on them. Or the used to anyway. The best thing you can do is take the bevel off. so it comes out to what is called a zero grind. no micro bevels. I really like the pathfinder knife. I enjoy alot of daves products.

What type of lanyard do you have on this knife?
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 4 года назад
It was just a small strip of leather. Probably more decorative than functional however, there are certain times where it gives you just a little more control over the knife.
