*Let's take a close look at the Pathfinder Knife Shop's offering of the Kephart style blade. This is an inde pendent review of a knife that I personally purchased and have well tested and found to be a great field knife and what I see as a good value based on it's price point. Just in case you have wanted to take a closer look at the knife and see it in action, here it is.

I've been using the knife for 20 months in both fair weather and winter wilderness/remote camping-----very satisfied with the performance for bushcraft and survival needs. I do have another"survival" knife for all the rough tasks like chopping and batoning that are needed around a campsite-----the Shcrade SCH52F. Also carry a Silky Gomboy 240. With those three I think I'm pretty much covered insofar as campsite/survival wood processing needs. Waiting on the arrival of a new Huls Bruk axe that will be taken along in certain situations.

I would rather the keep the handles how they are and let folks change the bevel if they want. Personally I like the steep bevel cause I have big hands so my thumb would lock on to that part naturally. You can always take wood off but not add it back on , I say keep it and let the owner mod the scales. Great looking knife, the tip is where this kephart design shines IMHO, PKS has a more drop pointed style tip and with a scandi that looks VERY useful to my whittling eyes.😉

I agree! I used to want all my gear to stay new looking but the more I use it and break it in, the more I come to value it as it has proved it's value and functionality in the field. I love how the dirt and sweat is soaking in and darkening the wood on this knife. It has a great patina going. Thank you so much for your time, interest and kind words!

Thank you so much Vance! I have looked at and handled the Condor version several times and it appears to be a fine knife to me. It also had that classic Kephart feel and was very comfortable to me. @blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 6 лет назад
I agree, they really are working hard to provide a good quality knife at a reasonable price. That is a balancing act in a way not to cut quality but to use quality materials and workmanship all while trying to keep prices very fair or at a good value. They definitely offer some good stuff over there. Thank you for taking the time to tune in and for your kind words brother!

I have always liked the overall simplistic design of the Kephart knife... While I admire the curly maple slabs I am a fan of black walnut slabs (guess I can strip the finish and refinish these in black walnut)... and really for less than 90 shekels plus S&H not a bad price either I'll be saving my penny's to buy one
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 6 лет назад
I think black walnut is beautiful as well. I have a Wood Bear Knife that I acquired a while back that has black locust slabs that look and feel amazing as well. I just enjoy wooden handles overall. Natural wood just has a warmth about it that seems timeless. I know there are other more durable materials out there but I still just prefer the look and feel of natural wood. I hope you will enjoy yours as much as I do my friend! Take care.

Nice looking knife! I’ve only had Mora knives on my adult life, but I’m interested in a Kephart style and a Grohmann Canadian style. Possibly both in full flat grind. Looks like Pathfinder pulled a solid one on this! Take care.

I definitely enjoy a good Mora and use them often myself. I do think they did a good job on this one as it is performing really well for me. Classic designs are still around because they work well.. Looks like a great knife that would suit me well. It makes you wonder if the Kephart design knife was custom made for him, or was it simply a good commercial knife that suited his purposes? Thank you for the review, Matt
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 6 лет назад
It is definitely a good all around field knife and capable of doing most any task in the field that a knife of this class should be capable of. The original was designed by Horrace Kephart himself and produced for him by Colclessor Brothers if I remember correctly. While the PKS is inspired by the original, it is very different in many respects as well. However, it is a great design of it's own and I am very much enjoying it. Out of the scorpion, scorpion hd, and the kephart, which would you choose and why? I dont have any of these knives myself. I've gone back and forth for months about them and cant seem to make my mind up. Personally, i think i would like the handle of the kephart with the scorpion hd blade. I hunt and fish alot so that would be the main uses of the knife. Also, how do you feel the pks heat treat of this 1095 compares to ESEE's heat treat. I find the edge retention of some ESEE lacking. Thanks for a great video.

Good blade review, i like it but i also like a lil thicker blade stock.. i know that robs it of alot of slicing ability but it gains alot in strength
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 6 лет назад
That is true. I guess it all comes down to what your intent for the knife is. If it is a one tool option type blade, I would tend to go with something a bit thicker myself. I find that for more bushcraft/woodcraft tasks, something a bit thinner suits me well. My favorites are 1/8" and 5/32". I have a few 3/16" blades but they just feel cumbersome for me. With that said, I know some people handle them very well and feel quite comfortable with them. Thank you for tuning in and commenting brother!
@TACHILL
@TACHILL 6 лет назад
Yeah, i use alot of thinner ones too.. excellent slicers! I just feel more comfortable with a lil thicker, 3/16 about right for me mostly because it takes the doh! features out of it hahaha

If any here has an answer I would be very appreciative. How does the thickness/roundness of this handle compare to a Mora Garberg? or is it at least a more filling handle than the Condor kephart? I have large meaty hands that are hard to fill comfortably and the Mora is the most comfortable handle I have found to date but I love the Kephart design, too. So I want one.
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 5 лет назад
I agree, the Garberg is extremely comfortable. It is funny, I have 2 knives in my bag that came with me today, one is a Garberg and the other is the PKS Kephart. The PKS is more round than the Garberg which has a slight oval quality to the handle but the handle of the PKS does fill you hand better than other Kephart style knives I have held. I love the fit of the Garberg, it is a perfect fit to my hand and the PKS while different in geometry is also a fantastic fit for me. It doesn't give me hand fatigue like more narrow handled knives tend to do. I hope that helps.

Where did you get the Sheath for this knife?? It doesn’t look like the typical Sheath from the Pathfinder Store. -Stephen, Ohio
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 6 лет назад
This one did come straight from Self-Reliance Outfitters. I think a while back they changed the company that supplies their sheaths if I am not mistaken. I bought a knife and sheath some time back and it did look much different. I have wet formed this one and coated it well with fixin wax which darkened it up and gave it a more shiny appearance but that is all. Thanks for taking the time to tune in!

I'm waiting for him to go back and make one 5'' or more. He always said that a 5'' blade is a good length, so why did he stop making his over 5'' Kephart?
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 6 лет назад
I am just guessing here, but I believe that it probably wasn't as popular? I know that if it had sold well, it would probably still be in production now. With that said, I can tell you that Dave has evolved over the years and over the past several years, I have not seen him once with a 5 inch blade on his hip. He has always had a Morakniv Garberg or even a PKS Scorpion on his belt, both of which are in the 4 inch range. I think the whole 5 inch concept was if you only have the "one tool," A 5 inch blade would allow you to do more along the lines of processing materials, batoning, etc. Personally, I am a fan of 3 7/8" to 4.25" blades for general bushcraft/woodcraft tasks. I find anything larger to be a bit cumbersome. I know everyone has their personal preferences as well though. Thank you for taking the time to tune in and comment!

@@davidarwood6264 You aren't stepping on my toes, I own a couple of Old Hickory butcher knives and have used them in the kitchen most of my life. @blackhatbushcraft 6 лет назад
I agree there are some definite differences. Thicker blade and different grind. I believe the original had a more flat shaped handle with walnut scales as well. The main similarity is the overall size and spear point profile. Wouldn't it be interesting to put this one in Horace Kephart's hands and hear his opinion? Someone likes to pick nits. If it is so intolerable as a Scandi, try a Pathfinder Trade Knife! I have many (over 20) knives but a Scandi grind seems to be a wood hog. My trade knife is sharp but cannot do some of the cuts well that my Helle Fjellkniven #4 just breezes through. Purchased a Kephart XL 6 weeks ago and am still waiting for them to ship it. Will see if it can unseat the Helle for belt time.
