I just recently purchased the Mountaineer, cant wait to receive it! I have several of the Pathfinder products, and couldn't be happier with the quality!
Its awesome they're making knives 3/32 thick. It was a common thickness for butcher/hunting knives of old. My green river hunter and vintage old hickory are 3/32 thick and they truly perform. Didn't think I'd see dave promoting knives like this because of how adamant he was in a knife needing to be 3/16 thick or at the very least 1/8. Good to see
Hi Dave, I bought one of your knives a couple of years ago that was like 30 bucks, I still love this knife, it is used daily, and just perfect. At least it was one your web site.Thank you sir!
Thank you, Dave, I enjoyed the video and the different knives and their uses. Some would like to have a much larger knife like the Bowie which is more of a weapon than a bushcraft knife. Again, thank you for such a great video. Keep making these and imparting such knowledge. Take care and stay well.
been waiting to see something like this b4 I go and buy one, have a CRKT in 1095 that looks like the scorpion, how ever I'm digging that camp and trail knife. maybe one day pks will make a rendition of the old seax
I've had great service from my Kephart XL and the old school PKS blanks that I put handles on myself. I'd love to get my hands on a PKS Forest Tool. Any idea when more may be available?
My bad I should have watched this whole video all the way through bur I would ask for a diy kit in the HD and mountaineer it's so gratifying to put your own knife together but as always there great knives thanks dave
I've had my PKS Kephart for years and I love it. I have carried many fixed blade knives but my Kephart is my go-to blade. When my wife stepped down as Cubmaster to start a girls' Scouts BSA troop, the committee wanted to gift her with a knife. When asked, I said without hesitation:"Pathfinder Knife Shop Scorpion". When they received it, let's just say, more knives were purchased! (Everyone wanted their own) Top notch quality, fair price and American Made... buy one and you'll have a companion for life.
I have been using a PKS Mountaineer for several years AND bought one of their new Bowies a few months ago. One word to describe these knives: OUT-FRICKEN-STANDING 😊 ❤
I have two of your DIY knives, when you were still offering them. I watched your video on making my own scales. Im very happy with these knives. Hopefully you will some day offer this option again. I enjoy putting together a knife type kit. Hopefully you will return to this option. Thanks
Let me tell you all I have the Mountain Lion from the PKS knife shop and I am in love with this knife , it is the best knife I have of all the knifes that I would use at a camp site doing any bush craft jobs.
Hi Dave diversing a bit but what’s your favourite canteen set, I’ve got most but I always go back to probably your very fist one, the now Nalgene s/s bottle and vargo titanium mug love it?
I have a PKS knife that I got in a Battlbox back in 2016. It's the one where you had to put it together. It has the Walnut handle and is 1/4" thick. I just dug it out so I can finish putting it together. I wonder if it has the same warranty as the new ones?
I have a scorpion and it is the best knife I have ever owned. Hands down. However the sheath doesnt seem to measure up. I went to get in my truck as I lifted my leg it put pressure on the handle of the knife and unknown to me at the time the knife cut right through the threads on the sheath and the blade was then protruding from the bottom of the sheath. As i slid in i sliced my front seat about 4 inches across. Knife is amazing, i would find a different sheath.
Since the 1st batch of the Wild Cat, way before the (dirty by design) output I purchased one. That blade will do anything for you in a camp; feather sticks, split wood, cut meat, fruit, bread and never fail sparks off a fero-frod with its sharp spine. If you keep them honed, PKS knives won't fail you. Also have rave reviews about the Camp and Trail, which I gifted to a good friend.
Ever get that feeling you been here before? They're great knives. I was gifted one and plan on buying a few more, maybe collect them all, as money permits. Keep on doing what you're doing. Thanks Dave
I was just wondering if we could talk about maintenance of these knives. Being 1095 they cannot be left to their own devices otherwise they will rust rather quickly. What do you recommend as far as maintenance and/or rust control? Especially in field conditions. Please and thank you.
The camp and trail with the PKS logo is my go too. You pair that with the woodsman wedgie and you have a great set up, especially for winter camping. Keep up the great work Dave!
I have the original camp and trail. (Pre lanyard hole) great knife it's been great processed plenty of wild hogs with it. And as any of you who have cleaned them critters, it takes a good knife!!! With this being 1095 steel, when I'm done with its washed thoroughly!! Allowed to dry over night and re-oiled with vegetable oil
I've enjoyed this style of sit down to go over the products from time to time, in addition to your normal educational videos. Especially on account of you guys routinely sell out of stock (good for you!) so it's nice to know what you've got cooking over there. Keep it up, I appreciate the straight forward nature of your kit and gear. I'm still beating the hell out of my Esees but I was thinking of adding a scandi grind to my kit over the Esee 3 flat grind that just isn't quite as good a carver, even if I keep it nice and sharp.
I am friends with many knife makers, I have used it all, not being in anyway arrogant so please follow. I learned to sharpen a knife as an 8 year old and I use one today more than most as I guide for big game 30 animals a year ish. 1095, 01 tool steel are by far the best steels I own. If you carry a steel you can touch it up every so often it stays a razor. Pick sv30, 80crv2, cpm 3v, infi, I can’t sharpen them in the field like I can 1095. They stay sharp longer but when they go they are gone.
I tend towards the "K.I.S.S" ideology when it comes to my handle materials etc anyway. Wood, bone or overmolded Rubber are where its at imo. Cheap, simple, effective & if you want something fancier you can etch the blade, carve the handle, change the handle all together etc. For me these are just ideal design characteristics for budget to midrange gear. It'll work out the box or you can do like i do & mod it to your liking without it hurting the wallet or the feelings so much. If the knife is too fancy you just wont use it the same.
Im a knife dude and with alot of experience. These are all very good knives and well made and would definitely get the job done. KISS should be used in most everything- Id just like to see a company (USA) make affordable quality full tang stuff becasue alot of folks cant even afford these knives. Ill put my money on my Mora Garberg, Mora Companion and a back-up Gerber Prodigy. Just my 2 government cents-
I bought a "Camp and Trail" when Dave brought them back (about 1 1/2 years ago?). Although I would like the grind to be a bit wider, It's still one great knife, that performs to spec. etc. I will probably never buy another knife, going forward. Once again, ANYTHING DAVE'S COMPANY MAKES, is first rate and worth every cent. ;-)
lol 2 seconds on the internet and I know the difference between the BHBL and the LBC sheath. I have my eye on the woodmuk. But I wish I could get Kydex.
Watched your video and loved it as always, went to your website, ready to pull the trigger on the Mountaineer and low and behold…there all sold out😕…BUMMER!
Thease are all really awesome knifes. And 1095 is amazing with the proper hear treat, and I see how know it would save you caused a lot of cost those knives be in the $200 range if you were using super Steels or more and those other steels are unnecessary for a knife it would be an Unholy pain in the butt to sharpen some of those other steals today
Woodmuck would be nice for skinning large game, the camp companion would be great for birds and smaller game. I really like the Camp and Trail design. Mostly I just use a cheap skinning or boning knife… all our nice knives (safe in the kitchen or butcher shop) are primarily Victorinox Rosewood Handled boning, steaking, and a santanko for kitchen use. I’ve destroyed a couple cheap old boning knives camping and processing firewood etc… going to eventually have to invest in a decent outdoor knife one day 😂
all of your knives are top of the line. i love the traditional style. i don't want a flashy gaudy knife. i want something that will do what i need and take what i give it without failing. and that is the PKS knives. wouldn't use anything else. i have a grizzly, kephart and a PFT puukko.,
I'm always on the lookout for good AMERICAN-MADE products, especially knives. That said I need to pick up a PKS knife to add to my growing collection. 1095 is good steel provided a proper heat treatment is done on it. Most knife manufacturers have had plenty of time over the years to get that right. But the real magic to 1095 is ease of edge maintenance when in the field. You could sharpen it on a flat rock if you had to. I've found a small ceramic rod and leather belt are more than enough to get my 1095s back to razor sharpness. If the edge is physically damaged then the Fallkniven DC4 sharpener and curse words come out to play. More exotic steels like S30v/S35v, M390, Magnacut, etc. usually require the use of diamond stones and more time to restore the edge after it dulls. Ain't no one got time for that in the field when you've already got traps and lines to check, resources to gather, food to prep, position to improve, etc. While my folding knife might be S30v, 154CM, or 440HC (either a Buck 110 or satin blade ZT 0350) my main woodwork/camp chore belt knife is usually going to be some sort of carbon steel 1095 in the form of a TOPS BOB, Mora Garberg, etc. And 1095 carbon steel is probably the best steel to use in small pocket folding whittling knives as well for all the same reasons.
I have four knives. The camptrail one with someone's logo on it. I was disappointed in that knife Then kephart which I like alot The grizzly. That was only on the site for a day or so, and I snag it right away. And the Scorpion HD, which I like even better than the kephart. Maybe a kephart HD. Mmm
Scorpion HD does everything a guy can push it through. My son has an original scorpion and it too is beast. I had one.. bought 2 originally, one for him one for me in 2015 I believe… I lost mine bbq’ing one day and replaced with the HD. Either knife is the only knife I’d ever need. Both his and mine me look and act brand new after 5/7 years of absolute abuse.
Love my Kephart Campmaster. It’s my edc and been putting it through its paces since they first came out. Funny you mention Ethan Becker. I was going to bladesmith hammer-ins when he was first developing his knives. Really enjoyed it any time we had a chance to talk shop.
"designed to be pleasing, but not gaudy" - Thank you! The curly maple on my PKS Scorpion is breathtakingly beautiful! When I opened the box I was so pleased, I love it. My view on sheaths - I wish the knife came with one, but I'm left-handed and it is so difficult to find a left-handed sheath. Everyone selling a sheath with their knives is selling a right-handed sheath. Varusteleka is the only seller who offers left-handed sheaths - so that's where I got the sheath for my Scorpion. They are not the most lovely sheaths ever, but it works and fits on my left. Trying to use a right-handed sheath as a left-hander takes longer and is more likely to cause accident or injury as I have to either switch hands or flip the knife 180 to use it.
A lot of PKS knives are priced between $120 & $135 which is a real deal when compared to comparable knives in that category. That Kephart Camp Master blade is calling to me. Always liked that profile and the little "guard" right before the blade is a nice extra without really preventing one from choking up on the blade for more precision tasks.
I have a few PKS knives probably four or five I love them all I even put one together that I bought as a knife kit that they sold I'm not disappointed in any way with any of their knives they are party robust like they said will last you life times
I really like that Nessmuk style knife... I'll definitely be ordering one soon. Any chance of the PKS making a Nessmuk style double bit hatchet? I've been looking for about a year trying to find one with that looks like the one he used and has the two different grinds the way he liked... but nobody seems to make them.
you should make some of these without handles to be added to a kydex kit or something. i always liked your spear idea behind the sheath of a knife. kinda wish you kept that idea. and just roll with it.
