I rarely watch an entire interview but this is an exception. It's such a pleasure to listen to both of them. Placidos' personality truly is as great as his voice.

Just finished watching this video and feel blessed. Thank you so much ROH for making this video and sharing it. It really is a blessing for people like me who never got a chance to watch even a live broadcasted opera. I pray for Maestro Domingo's health and also for maestro Pappano. They are true gifts from heaven. I hope someday I got a chance to meet and work with them. If it is possible, please make a broadcasted show in my country, Indonesia, and visit us if you will. We have summer all year long and 260million people here in Indonesia. There are a lot of talents here with no access to study and watch live opera, a very saddening situation for opera lovers like me.

All I know is I will spend money only those productions that take me seriously. Fulfilling the entire role, singing and acting, both of which inform the other, I would think, would be the goal of any committed opera performer. Placido basically pioneered this evolution of the art form and as a result, opera is much more compelling to people who otherwise would never consider it. For far too long, the singing was over-emphasized while the acting treated like a nuisance. Balance is healthy. A living legend. And a lovely human being.

Some of my greatest evenings at Covent Garden have involved the great Domingo. Hoffmann is my favorite I think. The most musical of tenors with a trumpet-like instrument.

LOL at 51:31: "and the EYES!! The intensity of the eyes is quite something..." Placido turns and looks at himself going like: "eyes???"

Goodness, I saw this a couple years ago and forgot about him recounting his doing Tonio's Prologo for the ailing baritone in a Madrid performance of Pagliacci! Since watching this back then, I came across a story about Caruso filling in for the bass, who lost his voice on-stage! There's a clip of him singing bass around here that talks about it. Among a number of other similarities Don Placido has in common with Caruso.
@jefolson6989

Caruso recorded "vechia zimara senti" but never intended it to be released. It was after his death. Just FYI. For your youtube search.

His tenor voice changed very little, considering his " faulty technique", assuming heavy roles at a young age. When he first did Otello, most people thought he'd be finished. It made him better. Most singers decline just with age and high milage. Like him or not, he is a unique phenomenon with chords of steel!
@shirleyrombough8173

He was one of the best tenors performing of the role of Cavaradossi ever. His Mario was stronger, not as wimpy as some tenors facing the evil Scarpia.

@@stardust8359 I'm far more familiar with Don Placido's voice over the years, Carreras to a lesser degree. I have to say, to me, it's a toss up. It could be either. I just don't hear the Carreras squillo here, and the singer sounds more athletic, if you will, which is more Domingo's style. Ah well. In any case, very thrilling and robust rendition.

Total agree about acting at 28:45. Unfortunately nowadays people demand "cartwheels" during singing now. People want to see singers doing very physical stuff. that's just the norm now unfortunately.
@uppityglivestockian
@uppityglivestockian 6 лет назад
@AstrialCOW, cartwheels? I don't want that as an opera patron. Perhaps you mean certain directors? All I know is I will spend money only those productions that take me seriously. Fulfilling the entire role, singing and acting, both of which inform the other, I would think, would be the goal of any committed opera performer. Placido basically pioneered this evolution of the art form and as a result, opera is much more compelling to people who otherwise would never consider it. As opera singers go, he was a remarkably good actor and look good on.stage. more recently the misguided notion that realistic acting in opera will attract younger audiences. Making opera REALISTIC is not only impossible, but the attempts wreck it. It was never intended to be realistic. Although a world in which everyone sings instead of speaking has certain attractions. Think of all the people you know. Do you really want to hear them sing? Maybe it would make those " Karen" tantrums more interesting?
@jefolson6989
@jefolson6989 Год назад
@@uppityglivestockian Natalie Dessay is the only singer I know of who did actual cartwheels! And sang running around, hanging upside down etc. It was fun, as a novelty. Until a few years ago, opera was one of the few career where one could be overweight and not super attractive. As long as the voice was great enough. Remember Zinka Milanov and Kurt Baum!

I'm sorry to say this but I cannot understand what Placido is saying almost half of the time :P Maybe they should've done the interview in Spanish and have the English subtitles. He's not very coherent in desperately trying to explain some things.

+AstriaICOW YES. I really wonder how one of the biggest singers in the operatic field, a man who had a HUGE international career can speak such weak english?? But I guess if you live your life on the stages of opera houses all over the world and study about 130 (?) roles, you don't have the time to learn a language you don't perform in too often...
@AstriaICOW
@AstriaICOW 8 лет назад
SatanAteMySocks it's not entirely true. He was fine when he was young, for example: /watch?v=3WmpbGjybgQ I think it has to do with his age than anything else. He needs to retire. The unfortunate thing is really that opera has fallen so much since the golden age from the 50s to the 90s that big houses are still using him to get tickets, otherwise they are going to shut down soon. Domingo kept saying that there are great talents every new generation. Haven't heard it honestly. His new Operalia winner Aida Garifullina is okay but she can only sing particular types of aria (mainly lyrical), and even specializing in this type with her light and bright voice she cannot be compared with the greats such as Barbara Bonney.
@uppityglivestockian
@uppityglivestockian 4 года назад
@@AstriaICOW So you think only the young should perform opera? How vapid and shallow the art form would quickly become, empty of texture, color, surety, depth and pathos. He should retire when he's ready to and when his millions of fans let him go. I assure you, we're not ready to and he still has voice and artistry so many will plunk down good money to enjoy in person. No one is forcing you to buy a ticket. Opera is plenty big enough for the Living Legend and everyone else, esp those he has helped to actually attain an opera career via his Operalia. My gawd, the intolerance and ingratitude of some opera "fans" is stomach churning.

@@uppityglivestockian Yes, you are absolutely right. I can't agree more. I want to add that his English is comprehensible. Yes, he has an accent, but this does not affect the clarity of his speech. I understand his English a lot better than the American or the Irish accent, for example.
