PL Travers was a prolific writer...perhaps the best way to honour her is to buy her books. Most musical adaptations vary from their literary origins...for better or worse. I loved Mary Poppins the movie. I saw it with my family as a child. We caught the red rattler into Melbourne especially. I thought it was so magical.
I wish they would focus on her more in this Documentary. I don't care about the stage show, but I'll sit though that to find out what I can about her. Thank you, to the person who posted this though
This is a documentary about the stage production of the music Mary Poppins. It is only tangentially about P.L. Travers. I don't know why it is being labeled as such. Guess I'll read the biography instead.
@rudy melgar yes she was a complex person with a lot of baggage on her shoulder. But you have to understand this she had a hard Bittersweet life growing up watching his father drinking himself to death such a young age if you seen Her biography interviews and the movie Saving mrs. Bank, then you would understand still she loved her father and you can imagine that was such a big trauma for her. But something good came out of it she created a popular book series and became a Beloved movie love by millions
I am the same way about it. That lady was hateful and didn't think Walt Disney was one of a kind. But there was no pleasing her. No one would ever even known her probably if it was not for Walt. She belittled Snow White and the 7 dwarfs. I am sure Walt Disney wished he never promised his kids he would make Mary Poppins. He didn't know it would be such a nightmare. And I liked Mary Poppins but the original creator P.L. Traveler's ruined the movie for me. This lady would make a Pope curse. But then again since she hated the film so much maybe I will watch out of spite. No but seriously, ever since I watched Saving Mr. Banks I can't watch Mary Poppins. The real Mary Poppins was more like Traveler's in real life and it ruined it for me. Knowing the headache that Walt Disney went through to make Mary Poppins is crazy. I did a little study on her after the film to see how awful she really was. She didn't want anything done in America which means she doesn't like America. But to keep selling the rights and then taking it back. She was the only one that didn't like the movie. She didn't want a happy ending. But she was way worse then the movie portrayed her to be. She had so many enemies yet to herself she was above Walt Disney.
Imagine spending years writing a book just to have all your characters, themes and storylines robbed and tarnished on the screen in front of you. It must have been devastating for her
UGH! This is the SECOND instance of a movie I grew up with having a horrible truth that means that I'm no longer allowed to watch this movie! First TAoM&O and now this movie! WHY do these childhood movies have to turn out to have something that makes me completely heartless if I enjoy them?
If she had approved of any film version (she would have had to make it herself!), it sounds like the audience wouldn't have enjoyed it even though they liked the book. She preferred a stern, cold depiction of Mary Poppins, which does not sound fun to watch. ...I guess I would have to read the book to understand why people liked the character she created.
I think it was wrong, on every single level, and maybe illegal, to make this musical. The stage version, not the movie I mean. Ms. Travers said in her will, that she wished that if a stage show be made, it not have the Sherman bros. and nothing with Disney associated with it...and this stomps on that request! Not cool!
What you say is correct, but I had read that although she didn't want the Sherman Brothers to have any more input into the stage productions she would allow the existing songs to be used. I'm not completely sure but I'm almost sure.
Geoff Dean Yes, this is what I've read too. She didn't mind the stage show using the already well-known music from the movie, but she didn't want the Sherman's to ADD any new music, mostly because she did not like them and didn't want them to get any more money.
Well, The South Bank Show was an arts programme. Funny how there's Cameron Mackintosh chatting away and the theme music to The South Bank Show is by Lloyd Webber.
If this person wants to know more about the making of Mary Poppins then the Disney movie Saving Mr. Banks will help. But this is my favorite Disney movie paired with Alice in Wonderland because are to deal with fantasy. But here's a fact that this person should know and that's Julie Andrews and I share the same birthday. This was Walt Disney's last movie before he died and was released on August 27, 1964. I use the instrumental from this movie for lots of reasons but still I love it.
So let me get this straight- They did it without the Disney influence- except of course the whole thing being the same-even the songs which are much of the story...OH! And minus the cartoons. In point of fact it was Walt Disney himself who made the ending focus on the redemption of the father. Not even PL Travers grandchildren much liked her according to Emma Thompson.
This is the 2nd or 3rd PL Travers bio that has turned into a promo for an upcoming Mary Poppins musical production. Oh no, nothing like the movie..Ha !
Can someone explain this to me, please. Why is it when I try to listen to Disney music on youtube, that the music itself is in a higher pitch than the movie? The reason I asked is because parts of the movie on here is in high pitch.
I could care less about the stage musical, especially because my grandpa had a hand in the original film. Pamela would have hated the musical much more so than the film and I don't blame her.
I have been a Disney fan for 60 yrs and my favorite Disney Movie is Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs and a lot of the later ones too. I never saw Mary Poppins til i was past 40 but I love the movie and I thought Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were great in it. Disneyland is my all time favorite theme park and I wish I could go there all the time but its 50 miles south of me and I cannot afford to go or even walk around the park much anymore. Too bad Walt Diseny didn't live long enough to see more thing built at Disneyland..He died in 1966 at age of 65 from lung cancer...(all those cigarettes did him in. I do want to see Saving Mr. Banks but I am not sure it will be an accurate movie. I will wait til it comes out in Redbox and then make the judgement.
In case you haven't watched it yet,it's a great movie.I'm not a "Disney Guru,"but people said somethings weren't that accurate. For example, they said Walt Disney too,too nice in this movie. But,it was still a wonderful movie.
Before watching Saving Mr Banks I knew nothing about Pamela and the history of the film making. But I grew up loving Mary Poppins, but the funny thing is I disliked the animation sequel, glad to know that Pamela did too. As amazing animation is, I just felt it shouldn’t have been included.
Really!? Thats so cool, Mary Poppins was my favorite movie as a child as well as my mothers, if your grandfather is still alive thank him for being an awesome part of my childhood
I think what people really don't get os that if you try to recreate something, its not gonna be the same as the book. The Killing Joke tried to do that, and look how much hate that movie got. I think people are just stupidly picky
This is not a documentary about P.L Travers. To understand her you need to watch Saving Mr. Banks. She was very bitter about the personal losses she sustained as a child and it very much affected her for the rest of her life. I think the stories she wrote was a way to escape those awful memories and trauma she lived through.
I grew up with the real Mary Poppins during my 1950s childhood in Brooklyn. Mary Poppins was caustic, prim and proper - and most definitely NOT the saccharine version Disney created. I can’t stand the Disney version, and because it suffuses this video, I can’t watch it.
What on Earth is all the singing and dancing about? I thought it was supposed to be a documentary about P.L. Travers, not an advert for a stage musical. And P.L. Travers supposedly disliked Disney and the whole idea of turning her work into a musical, so all the music from the Disney version seems very out-of-place, not to mention disrespectful.
Apparently she became fond of the movie in later years. She admitted to watching it after the premier. They're making the jungle book. Real live action. I'm not watching any of them lol no way would I waste money or waste my brain space on rubbish remakes. It's all Hollywood does now
I never go see musical stage show. Just seing parts of it in documentary is enough to see how bad it is, look ugly and crap. Love film but not read books yet
