Placido Domingo as Di Luna (baritone) in Il Trovatore - Duet with Sondra Radvanovsky, 2011 

Listening and watching Dmitri Hvorostovsky so many times in this role I'm not sure whether to laugh or to cry. Just watch his duets with Sondra at the concert in Moscow, not to mention their performances in 2009 and 2011 at the MET.

I was fortunate to be in the audience for this concert in Toronto, and it was fabulous. Although Plácido was singing a baritone role here, I believe that he still considers himself to be a tenor. It's been said that, when he sings a baritone role, he doesn't sing it as a baritone or as a tenor. He sings it as Plácido Domingo.

I am sorry but Domingo sounds pretty good to me. I wish all of these negative Karens and Kevins would stop criticizing. He definitely sounds good enough to keep performing for audiences, even if he is singing baritone roles. What's the big deal? Let him continue to enjoy singing while he's able.

Why is it that everyone is complaining that a tenor is singing baritone roles, when I don't think I've seen much complaining when sopranos take on mezzo roles or vice versa?

You are right. And that could have been done by many tenors before him, Del Monaco, Corelli come to mind. However they respected more their prestigious carreers than the money they would have made singing as their famous names.

I wish he had more of a baritonal color to his voice.. most sopranos who transition to mezzo's develop it, but.. you cannot criticize his vocalism.. His voice is steady as can be.. ( never a hint of a wobble,) and it sounds easy.. and he is a consummate musician. too.. so.. I will accept this lighter color, he is still making music.

He's not "un tenor lirico ligero." Juan Diego Florez is a ligero, not Domingo. A ligero's voice would never survive singing Otello (well over 200 times), much less Wagner, and especially not to great acclaim as Domingo has. Having seen him a few times live as a baritone now, he does have the necessary volume (some very low notes are occasionally soft, but typically he is loud). Of course, he doesn't sound like a true baritone, but his voice is almost as dark as light baritones like Hampson now.

it's true that tenors at higher ages become bad baritones and baritones seem to become bad tenors, but this doesn't mean that they must force to appear on stage even if their performance is an average one, we better remember Domingo 20-30 years ago!

I agree as far as the state of his current voice goes, he's not a clear tenor or baritone. However, let's look at the roles he's performing this year: Francesco Foscari, Simon Boccanegra, Giorgio Germont, Nabucco, the baritone in Giovanna d'arco, di Luna, and Neruda in Il Postino. Except for the last (which is an in-between "baritenor" role imo), these are *all* baritone parts. He might still sing tenor in concerts, but on the operatic stage he has clearly shifted almost entirely to baritone.

As a Tenor he proved his worth,What else does he has to prove?What is the next for Placido?CASTRATION! For this particular role a darker voice is better. But I love him anyway :)

Difference between tenor and baritone? Colour (you have got what God, Nature, Isis or Osiris gave you) and ability to sustain tessitura (tenors struggle in lower octave and baritones, in the upper one). Even though Domingo is an operatic animal (he can sustain any tessitura), his colour is that of a tenor. No discussion on this topic. Now, he may be considered as a baritone, but not in opera, God's sake. Otherw ise, Luis Quilico would be considered basso profondo.

Para mi la cuestion esta clara como el agua. Domigo es un tenor lirico ligero cantando en la parte grave de su voz. Si a esas vamos, la Radvanovsky podria cantar el Manrico; seguro tiene LAS NOTAS pero sonaria con el peso y volume suficiente en el teatro?

Or Domingo was a baritone singing as a tenor or he is a tenor singing now as a baritone. Either way he is singing exactly the same as always. He hasn't modified his technic to sound more as a baritone. To me he continues sounding as a tenor. With his voice in the nose as it always was. I will never pay to hear him in any baritone roles. However, as a tenor, he has sung SOME memorial performances. LET IT BE. Enough of Domingo!!!!

Personalmente non ho niente contro Domingo. Ma non è un baritono, non è mai stato un baritono e secondo me non avrebbe mai dovuto toccare questo repertorio. Adesso va in giro con queste prestazioni mediocrissime, si fa pagare molto bene e questo fa arrabbiare molta gente.

What a shame that Nilsson named Domingo as the first recipient of her prize, thus enabling him to continue singing past any valid level of vocal beauty or valid characterization. His inability to retire from performing vocally undermines every other great potential choice he could have made to continue to have a great space in operatic music [conductor, teacher, competition sponsor/judge, stage director].

Y aplauden, y pagan, y tan contentos...Para mí, a puntapié, y no es para faltarle al respeto al maestro. Domingo era un gran tenor y ha dejado un legado impresionante (si acaso, le reprocharía el haber masacrado a Wagner, y, en algunas ocasiones, a Mozart, pero por lo demás, chapau). Ahora se cree con el derecho de cantar 'n'importe quoi' y no hay derecho, caray. Lamentablemente, para que no le dejen cantar papeles totalmente inapropiados para su voz, tendría que violar a la hija menor del director de orquesta. Como no lo va a hacer, baritoneará hasta que le salga de los cojines. Hay los que confunden el escenario con un asilo. Por cierto, resido en Bélgica, Domingo baritoneaba en Hasselt y no fui, a pesar de que podía y que la ópera me tiene enamorado. No fui, porque yo no pago dinero para escuchar voces falseadas. Ahora, si cantara gratis (yo también canto arias de bajo con mi voz de barítono, porque me gustan, pero lo hago en privado y no cobro). Al final, acabaremos tenerle más respeto a Bonissoli que a Domingo, me temo.

Not a real baritone and maintaining his vocal presence when he should have retired that part of his career and concentrated on conducting and producing. Nilsson appointed him the first recipient of her prize and I think she would have been disappointed that he did not know when to retire from singing. He is not "bad" but as others also say below he is taking these roles from real, new, young baritones rather than helping them with their careers.

He's taking jobs from real baritones.
