Sheer beauty and obvious potential. No wonder Rudel snapped him up without hesitation. Here's the real reason the rumor started that he was really older: Lauri Volpi heard him sing and he openly doubted Domingo could sing so well so young. Someone overheard him and a rumor was born. The proof of age is readily available and @mm413f has also done the math. Later (I think), you see Domingo attending a tribute concert for Lauri Volpi in Spain, after having just performed in London. There's B&W vid of it in one of my playlists. There, he conducts and then is pressured into singing at least one aria. He graciously does, though his voice is tired and the prick announcer who twisted his arm backstage should have been flogged. Anyway, at the end of the concert, you see Volpi embrace Domingo like he was his long lost son and Domingo is sweetly affectionate to him. So, I doubt Volpi meant any harm and there were no hard feelings. Domingo is famous for letting bygones be bygones. Mil gracias por compartir esta gema del mas gran tenor de todos.

He was most certainly 21 here. This is a very famous production as it was the final production before retirement for Lily Pons. It was 1962, and Domingo was born in 1941. The math isn't difficult, he was 21.

I think I'm going to take your comment as a positive one. For someone who hates Domingo so intensely as you to criticize his interpretation rather than his singing has to be some sort of sideways compliment really.

To those commenters who doubt Domingo was actually 21 here: If he were indeed 28 in 1962 as the rumor goes then his conception must have been a miracle, since his mother was a school girl in the Basque Country of Spain in 1933-4 and his father (whom he closely resembles) was living in Zaragoza in Aragon. The two didn't meet for another six years once they both moved to Madrid after the Spanish Civil War (which ended in 1939). His parents were actually well-known singers in their own right so the idea that they had a kid in secret in 1934 is quite ridiculous and has never had any actual proof to support it beyond gossip. Besides this, his sister, who was only 1.5 years younger than he (as all their childhood photos together make very clear), would also have had to have lied about her age her whole life and her obituaries would be lies too. We know for a fact that his parents toured Latin America in 1946-48 with composer Federico Moreno Torroba, then brought Domingo as a child to Mexico, where they had had their biggest success on their tour. Not too long after arriving he won a singing competition for little boys and his parents put him to work playing children's parts in their zarzuela productions--that would have been a little hard to do if he were already almost an adult at the time. We also have photographs of him as a young boy in Mexico, which had to have been after 1948 because of the well documented tour which first brought them to Mexico. Anyway, it would be mind-boggling if he has his extremely heavy work schedule today of singing in operas and concerts, conducting, running the LA opera, serving in many organizations, overseeing Operalia, etc., if he were really 81 now.
