C'est incompréhensible!!! on ne sait pas qui est derrière tout ça . Des personnes mal intentionnées peuvent détruire une carrière en quelques minutes surtout à notre époque . Je pense sincèrement que Placido est victime d'affabulations et avec ces mouvements féministes plus ou moins intégristes qui fleurissent partout il est facile d'accuser un innocent . Bientôt les hommes n'oseront plus regarder les femmes.
Great version...starts early enough to get the dramatic buildup...love the chimes tolling toward the morning execution...and then the magnifico Placido...phenomenal talent - voice and dramatic presentation....thanks so much for posting!
What an unbelievable moving piece of music presented with such a stellar voice. Placido Domingo's version of this masterpiece is the zenith of operatic perfection. This is to Domingo, what Nessun Dorma is to Pavarotti.
I'd always dismissed opera as being 'just a lot of loud noise' - until a few years ago. The aria that 'converted' me was Vesti la Giubba, the version Placido Domingo sang at the 3 Tenors concert in 1994; out of nowhere I just got so emotionally invested in the singing, I wanted more. While I don't understand the language, I felt every word in my heart - something a lot of modern music cannot do.The debate about who is/was the 'better' tenor has always puzzled me - the obvious comparison to Domingo has always been Pavarotti (bless his soul), and while arguably Pavarotti was the 'better' technical singer, on a personal level I prefer the richness and emotional resonance of Domingo. The point being that both are (was) damn fine tenors in their own right; dismissing one for the other is like dismissing a Ferrari for a Lamborghini; you may prefer the one, but debating against the other being a good car would only make you look silly...Opinion, of course - but I wish people would spend their time on the things they like instead of wasting their breath on things they don't...
Wolf#2293 - I totally agree with you: there are tenors who are better technically but Placido always sings as if he were actually the person whose role he is singing. He is Mario here and he is Canio in I Pagliacci. He carries us along with his gorgeous voice and true acting ability. I try never to criticize any of these performers or say who is worse, just whom I like and why. They all have worked hard to achieve their place in the opera world.
Plácido è sempre unico e eccezzionale Una voce stupenda !! Ma sur RU-vid, si direbbe che la gente giudica sopratutto per rapporto alle immagini o video/composizioni ... La sua voce è sempre la stessa ! E l'artista non si mette più in dubbio !
The Great Domingo sings this better than anyone. His voice is utter perfection, and when he infuses it with the emotion of a condemned man mourning the profound loss of ever touching again his beloved, it moves me every single damn time. An artist of such magnitude... The standing ovation from the stadium and flowers clearly touched him. Millions upon millions of people love him so much. Rubbish old recording. Probably VHS… Then out of that - through the interference and the loss - reaches the rich and refined voice of a true master, one of his signature pieces seems unhindered by the crude recording. Bravo. And thank you.

I think his unique ability to express very believable emotion through his singing is what separates him from the others in this aria. Then of course there are the ringing tones in his voice. I also really like his ending notes which he holds with grace while others yelp or half-scream.

Others may or may not be technologically more perfect but with Placido you get everything: ringing vocal color, excellent musicianship and the fact that he became the role he was performing. He was Cavarradossi here. And besides I love his looks. Bravissimo Domingo.
En esta frase "le belle forme disciogliea dai veli" "DISCIOGLIEA" Debe pasar de un fortísimo a un piano en un mismo fiato. Esto puede observarse por ejemplo en las versiones de Miguel Fleta o Franco Corelli. En las versiones de Plácido Domingo no se observa nunca aunque si es verdad que la pasión y la fuerza es perfecta pero técnicamente no está cantado como está escrito en la partitura. Saludos. P.D.: Si no las ha escuchado nunca de verdad le recomiendo escuchar las versiones de Miguel Fleta y Franco Corelli. Estoy seguro que serán de su agrado.
