Science is a way of knowing, if you say "This isn't science BUT ... " means "I don't know what I am about to say BUT ... "
Don't be afraid of science - science doesn't afraid of anything!
Note the chopping in the video is with my LEFT hand, I am not left handed.

Welcome back Cliff Stamp ! You have great timing... I only just discovered your videos and the treasure trove of thought provoking and interesting info & concepts presented in them, and I was thinking it was a shame you weren’t posting currently. I did a one hand, non-dominant hand one stick fire challenge a while back and it was definitely an interesting experience retraining to not only use my left hand, but also not rely on the stability provided by a support hand. Several times I’ve given thought to doing exactly what you mention here, retraining to use my non dominant hand long enough to reattain proficiency in day to day tasks. The resilience of the brain and the neurological changes that accompany something like that are fascinating. Plus, it’s gotta be just plain useful having ambidextrous ability 😀 Many years ago I practiced a lot of sleight of hand, and I also play guitar... both things definitely had a long-term positive impact on my general dexterity in my non-dominant hand, even for unrelated tasks.

I like that knife. Funny I’m left handed I started taking martial arts 5 years ago after a home invasion an they broke my left arm an ribs. I couldn’t fight so I learned to be very dangerous with both hands but you have to keep doing it. Seems for me I can lose it fast . It might just be me being hard on myself. But I feel a difference if I don’t train both sides equally

Cliff, this is thought provoking stuff..... science and philosophy do cross over, both can be meditative. Knife sharpening fits both categories too I think. Does philosophy underpin science? Or vice versa? When I have a blunt edge I want it sharp and both subjects impact on how I go about achieving it..... oh and then I have to go to work..... more like this please. Thanks.
@CliffStamp
@CliffStamp 4 года назад
There is a Philosophy of Science, this deals with the questions as to why the scientific method is the way it is so that it provides knowledge. Now a lot of scientists kind of ignore that, and they argue that Science evolves simply through feedback - pragmatism.

SuperSteve and that group of individuals who did edge retention testing, they make very strong claims about steels/edge retention etc. but will often say "this isn't science" etc. . If you have any training at all in metallurgy/science or even just did a one year course as a lab tech, it is really weird to hear - because your immediate response is - look if it isn't science then you don't know anything (by definition) so I might as well be watching the Kardashians as they don't know anything about steel either, probably experts on plastics though.

Once upon a time I tried to learn how to sharpen with my left hand. What I discovered was I lack the patience and the tenacity to relearn. Sometimes I think I should erase everything I know (including the parasite movements and techniques) and start over freshly from the basics.
@CliffStamp
@CliffStamp 4 года назад
I found it was really interesting as I had to relearn everything, even just doing basic tasks, like peel potatoes with your left and watch what happens.

@CliffStamp
@CliffStamp 4 года назад
You don't want to eliminate variables, variables are the things you study. You want to minimize confounding factors - but only to the extent that your conclusions demand it.
@CSGraves
@CSGraves 4 года назад
Whoops, I shoulda specified the variables _outside_ of the ones subject to study! Back to the chopping block!
@CliffStamp
@CliffStamp 4 года назад
@@CSGraves Tom Hosang had a video on this, one of his last ones where he talked about how uncertain he was in his conclusions because of so many factors which were not being accounted for - ironically enough, that's about as pure as science as you can get, because they always exist and you HAVE to think about what you are saying and does the data really support it.
@CSGraves
@CSGraves 4 года назад
@Cliff Stamp Yes, being aware of, and upfront about, any shortcomings in your process is indicative of an analytical approach & shows promise of future refinements. Someone who views their early efforts as gospel on the other hand... well, inflexibility in the face of new data ain't exactly a hallowed property of scientific tradition.

Beautiful stuff mate. I was talking with Michael Christy about this. Running a test is difficult, and without people being informed as to what can be improved nobody will know the difference between science and mistakes. With Steve’s testing, a lot of really experienced people had no reason to doubt some of his more controversial results. An informative video as to what common mistakes would be helpful. I must say your videos on testing already are very informative as well.
