I’m missing the Stillwater game so badly here in Wv. We have no lakes with trout this time of year that I know of. Our wild trout streams are on fire right now but I can’t wait till the state and pay ponds stock. Some friends think I’m crazy for Stillwater fishing with all of the wild streams we have but I like to fish for trout in ponds and lakes because of how finicky the fish can be. I love the technical challenge that Stillwater fishing can bring. Great video and content, I appreciate it a ton, thanks!!!!!!! I enjoyed it tremendously!!!!!!

Glad you enjoyed it. Stillwaters are a lot more fun than most people realize but they take a different skillset which can require time and effort to learn. Most folks don't commit the time to learn that skillset so they don't experience the fun and success.

Thanks for posting that video. I normally just do river fishing but it was fun to see you two catch so many big fish. Can you explain what a washer rig set up is as I'm fairly new to this kind of fishing. Also I have really enjoyed watching your modern nymphing videos and was wondering if you can recommend a guide in Utah specific to Euro Nymphing. I was hoping to fish the Provo or Weber in about two weeks (hopefully the flows won't be as high, fast and murky by then). Thanks for all the instruction you give.

washing line: usually a floating line or midge tip, long leader with 3 flies spaced out. top dropper (closest to fly line) is a nymph (can be weighted or unweighted), second dropper is same as first, and point fly is a buoyant fly of some kind that floats, so the two droppers are suspended between the point fly and the fly line like clothes hanging from a clothes line, aka a "washing line" if you google image search, there's tons of diagrams showing you size and length of tippet between flies, what fly options, etc

Are you using a Wychwood parabolic drogue in this video? I’m looking to use a drogue with my drift boat. I’ve heard some people prefer conical drogues with drift boats due to the wind catching the bow more than the stern. However I’d like a drogue that I could use on a drift boat, as well as a flat-bottom aluminum boat. If you have a recommendation, I’d love to hear it!

That washing line setup sounds very effective. I see in Reply's to look online for setups, but please, tippet X and basic setup would be greatly appreciated (just someplace to start). Understood floating fly line/leader/tippet with midge/midge/dry. Preferred knots too. Web is so cluttered.

An easy version would be, 5-7' of tippet to first fly, 3-5' feet of tippet to a second fly and another 3-5' of tippet to your third fly. 3x-4x tippet would be the most common sizes for this method. Adjust the lengths of tippet to allow your flies to get deeper or keep them shallower and to either keep them close together or allow them to spread apart in the column.

Great stillwater video…very educational. Would love to see more. I see you’re using the T&T Avant rod and Kramer is using the Echo Stillwater. I’m looking for a dedicated stillwater rod for indicator, med and fast sinking, and washing rigs. I will be fishing 60% from inflatable pontoon and 20% each from float tube and boat. Would you recommend one of these rods over the other or another rod for my fishing intentions?

The Avantt is an excellent all around rod. It’s a bit lighter and quicker to recover than the Echo. The echo is probably the best mid priced rod purpose built for stillwater fishing though. Most of the others in that range or cheaper are very heavy and a burden to cast all day.

@@tacticalflyfisher3817 Thank you! I have several rods. The two I tend to use for stillwater are Winston Alpha+ 9’ 6wt and Sage Foundation 9’ 5wt. The Alpha+ is an amazing rod with a main purpose of streamer fishing rivers. When used on lakes I feel it needs a bit mor length. The Sage just doesn’t have enough backbone for the rigs I mentioned. Thoughts? I have a Contact II 3wt that I love, might need to add another T&T to the quiver.

is there a stillwater equivalent to your river approach of "bottom to top, near to far, shallow to deep"?

The same approach is still definitely beneficial. It's easier to sort through it more quickly with a boat partner but I'm always going through a progression of depth and retrieve speed until I find a combination that works consistently. Then if the action stops, I make alterations and go through a progression again.

@@tacticalflyfisher3817 I go shallow to deep (both countdown and line density), slow to fast retrieve, once I work through a few iterations, then I'll change flies or tactics. I'm also starting to play with the parabolic lines and midge tips as "searching" lines, which I'm still learning more about. Gotta find a lake with reliable fish that I can use for testing and creating baselines.

Thanks Jeff. The lanyard is a Golden Trout lanyard with an Orientsun box attached by velcro. I'm not sure if Golden Trout lanyards is in business currently though.
