Thank you for speaking about your experience, Amanda. It’s been so heartbreaking to watch the news and to hear how you’ve been treated throughout the pandemic and for your entire life. I feel like so many Canadians ignore our issues with racism and pretend we’re an idyllic multicultural society with no xenophobia or discrimination, which is just so far from the truth. I am horrified by the hatred being put on display by so many ignorant people but sadly I am not surprised. I hope the stationery community can come together and support Asian creators, businesses, and art forms. This video was so informative and beautifully done and I so appreciate the emotional labour you put into creating it 🖤

I have genuinely never understood why people believe that everyone in islamic attire is "a terrorist"!? Like underneath ANY kind of clothing is a human and EVERYONE deserves an equal amount of respect. People come along with such absurd preconceived notions about anyone who is different from themselves and refuse to even try to build a relationship! No religion is a cult, they are all belief systems each with beautiful traditions and customs!

I’m a second generation Chinese-Dutch girl, and I used to think it’s normal, the jokes insulting China and my culture, looking at me weird when I go to the Asian supermarket near my school, the questions I get asked when people meet me. You really opened my eyes, making me realise that’s not what people are supposed to go to, so thank you for doing this Edit: I remembered something I wanted to say. I’m in the middle of choosing my future career path, and when I told the teacher I wanted to study science, and work in the medical world, he asked if that’s what I wanted, or what my parents wanted. It just seemed as a legitimate question, but asking my friends I found out it was only asked to me, my Asians friends that didn’t choose science didn’t get asked that question, and other people didn’t either. It was a question that wasn’t that bad at first, but later I realise it came from stereotypes about Asian parents. Yeah. That’s what I wanted to say I think

I'm a teen of color and when I imagrated to Canada I felt so so left out... I was bullied too. I got racist comments often saying "go back to your country" or "you aren't us!" These comments made me feel like I wanted to be white instead. Eventually I became friends with people of color and they told me that they felt the same sometimes. I've now started getting more connected to my culture instead and I fight back when I get racist comments. Ty so much for this video Amanda and addressing this problem I salute you!!🙂

As apart of the Asian community, it is so important to stress that these attacks have been happening for a long time, and people are just starting to bring awareness. People are attacking all Asians but especially our elders, which brings our community a lot of pain seeing that respecting elders are a big part of our culture. I love how you included Canada statistics, obviously since your Canadian, but also since many people assume that Canada doesn’t have racism. Thank you Amanda for speaking out about the Asian hate crimes. They can’t burn us all.

I don't know enough about Canada but I do know that many Chinese ( correct me if I'm wrong) buy apartments and homes in Canada. The homes sit and there are very few places to rent therefore the cost of rent sky rockets. It's not those Chinese families faults they wanted a home in Toronto ( correct me if I wrong) .? Its the Canadian Government that allows rent to be exorbitant. Maybe those of Asian decent are getting the brunt and anger of what the Canadian Government is doing or NOT doing.

Why can’t everyone appreciate the diverse cultures and traditions of the world for being fascinating and beautiful? There are imperfect people in every culture and in every time. People can be cruel and selfish and mean in any culture. But there can also be good and kind and beautiful human beings in any culture. Can’t we embrace who we are, flaws and all, and embrace others with their imperfections but also with their beauty. I personally am from a pretty sheltered small town, so I don’t see other cultures very often, but when I do, I find them beautiful and fascinating and love learning about their personal stories and hearing some of their languages. I think you’re beautiful, Amanda, inside and out. ❤️
@nixthelapin9869

I’m white, but many of my friends in high school were Asian because my town has a pretty high Asian population. Much of those friends and their families immigrated from China. It was really interesting to see the diversity among this group in of itself. There was a lot of variation in their fluency in English (since they were from China, their first language is Chinese) and how they interacted with American culture. But it was also sad to see that the ones who were less fluent in English were less connected with other students or couldn’t get into the higher classes (like honors or AP) because they can’t keep up with the language, even if they’re smart enough to do the class. One kid in one of my classes would have a digital translator for when we took tests so he could actually take the test (which obviously meant he took longer). Then there’s the name thing- taking up European names to fit in with the culture. Sometimes, it is a practical issue, like it being difficult to pronounce in some languages. Like one of my friends’ names was really hard to pronounce, no matter how much I tried, so I used her English name even when I used the Chinese names of my other friends (which she was very sweet about- I felt really bad about it). But that’s not the case most of the time- it’s just not wanting to use ethnic names. Most of my friends’ names were really easy to pronounce, but they weren’t European so it didn’t come naturally to people here in America. People don’t like things that are different, so they try to avoid it. None of us are exempt, myself included, but we should all make the effort to embrace the different in our lives :) Thank you for the beautiful discussion Amanda!

I can tell that you did a ton of research. You brought forth many relevant topics that a lot Asian people are too scared to talk about. Your words are truly genuine, and it shows that you deeply care about this topic. Thanks for taking the time make this video and sharing it with followers. Never be embarrassed of who you are or where you come from... It's not your background or your ethnicity that defines you. It's your thinking, your talent and your hard work... That is what smart people see on you. Not the colour of your skin... Miserable people will always find something to complain, criticise or even hate others... Good Lord these people hate themselves, how can they love others? You should be proud of your chinese background and you should learn more about Chinese culture in the future. It will definitely help your inner self, your personality and your work. I am Greek but I have always been fascinated by other cultures. Take care and keep posting those amazing videos! By the way I have only discovered your channel 2 days ago and I have spend all my weekend watching your videos on how to plan my journal...

I am Filipino but studied in a Chinese Buddhist School in the Philippines. A class is specially allocated for Chinese calligraphy and that is where I learned how to hold brushes and the strokes that we use now for brush calligraphy. As an asian working in the middle east, racism is manifested on our payroll - arab vs non arab, local or not. And added to that fact is the gender discrimination. It is a daily struggle and I am glad to see people speak up about this. Thank you Amanda for dedicating your April Plan With me for racism (this also happens to be my birth month).

The part that you said you didn’t show your face at first really made me sad. As an Iranian I really felt everything you said. My profession is art and the fact that western don’t count on Asian arts really sucks. I mean there are lots of countries with amazing art and art history such as Iran, India, China, Japan and more, and if you look at books about art history there’s just few pages about us. It’s only because they define art, and that definition is west art history. Anyway so glad you talked about this. You are really inspiring. Keep going. ✨

Thank you Rachel for speaking up about the microaggressions and sharing your experience. It's never easy to speak up about racism, misogyny and other topics you mentioned. Thank you for pointing out the topics without using harsh words for those who might be trigger or get upset. It's never easy to use your platform to advocate for what you believe and include political topics. I really appreciate that you took the time to research and educate not only yourself but also the viewers. I hope that the hate crimes and racism will improve by others understanding and learning/relearning their actions, thoughts and nuances. I think we can all make a better world for everyone by making this place a little less scary and everyone understanding to those who are different. I mean, imagine a world where everyone is exactly the same. I appreciate the differences and that we can all learn from the unfortunate incidents. Thank you Rachel and everyone who is actively learning and unlearning and relearning.

I am new to the journaling community (started with Elizabeth at PBB ) so I am catching up on your videos and was so impressed to watch this one. Amanda, thank you for talking about this very important subject with such honesty and clarity. As a black women from America who grew up in an all white area, I can truly emphasize with your experiences and thoughts ( and, yes all the facts and statistics!).It is so very disheartening to see all this hate continuing to thrive around the world. But, when I see young talented women like you and Elizabeth sharing your truths and speaking up against hate and violence, I am filled with hope. While we each have are own stories regarding race and its myriad of layers and complications, one simple solution is to talk. The more we talk, the more we learn. So thank you….and, it goes without saying….your spreads are so beautiful, fun and inspiring 👼🏾🙏🏽💖

I am a 15 year old Japanese and everyone in my family and relatives is Japanese born in Japan. From October 2016 to June 2020, I have lived in the United States (I live in Japan now). I was very fortunate to be able to attend race-wise diverse schools throughout the four years, and I was proud of my race and nationality until I realized that I was /only/ proud of the fact that I am Japanese and that I am bilingual. I am still figuring out what I can be proud of about myself and I do have a vague idea now, but at that time, it was crashing my mental health. It was like if I was anything else than Japanese, I wouldn’t be unique enough. Luckily, I was never faced with discrimination and actually had the best four years in my life, but I’d like to say thank you for voicing that Asians aren’t “one.” Even if we are all Asian, we are different and unique individuals.

I relate to a lot of what you said and you perfectly articulated a lot of thoughts that I've internalized over the years. I'm first gen Iranian-American. My dad is from Iran but my mom is American, and I never grew up speaking my dad's language, Farsi, at home. There was a lot of resentment growing up, and even now, as a 28 year old, I am learning to forgive myself for that resentment. And this is coming from someone who works in immigration and I dedicate my career to helping other immigrants! Like you said, we have these two conflicting identities and too often there is an erasure of one or both cultures when trying to integrate with our classmates or society as a whole. It takes time, and I am so glad you made this video to share a part of your identity and speak up for injustice ❤️
