Thanks man this tips are going to help me a lot. Awesome drawing by the way. I can't wait to see final drawing and hear the story behind such an awesome work:
When you was explaining in the concept about you thinking what to draw and when you draw it on paper it doesn't go right on paper how it did in your head, THAT IS SOO ME!! I am so glad I pressed this video to help me on how to start planning thank you!!👏👏
Thank you Dan for that comprehensive tutorial. Just as an aside regarding terminology, the word thumbnail dates to the 17th century and means, obviously, a small sketch of an idea. I've also heard of a reference that says artists used to dip their thumbnail in ink and make preliminary sketches using their fingernail as a pen nib. Obviously they would have needed long nails. Whatever the case, looking forward to your next video!
WOW! You just made my day... Heck, I think you just made my summer as well!! This is awesome and it remind me how I used to draw in my youth. Anyway, this is just great work. I'm gonna share this one at my site on Facebook. Thank you for being an inspiration!
Thanks for this video. Recently i have been really interested in how people get ideas and how do they draw these out. So a lot of planning is needed, i see. And loads of sketching something from various angles.
Can't wait for the next one it a bit like the Cybermen. I really recommend listening to spare parts the audio drama as it is very similar in tone to your world. Also look at "big finish spare parts" concept art I think that it will really inspire you.
some good advise . here is some over one, Don't use fabercastell pencil at this level. that is good to start but you need to change after you are not a debutant anymore. use staedtler or caran d'arche if you are rich ahah also you can't get all the contrast with one pencil. you should use 2H,4H,HB ,2B, 4B,9B you never spend enoth time learning the humain body. that is the source of most of improvment in drawing so go on croquis cafe and do more body...etc sorry for my english
so i just watched the video about the skull and the spine ... not that great. you can see that he don't really know the shape of the skull for exemple. then i talked about the caran d'arche pencil they are two time more expenssive than staedtler and maybe 3 time more than faber castle. so no it is not an easy buy.
I love that this channel is paper and pencil. Traditional is the only way . Digital art is not art. Having a computer do your work for you is not art . I’m subbing
I just found your channel today and I love the cyberpunk-esque atmosphere your drawings bring about. Question though, you said you do everything in pencil, have you thought about scanning the base sketch into Photoshop and painting it there? I want to eventually get into digital paintings and I think this would be an awesome digital painting.
What is your perspective/view on applying this to abstract drawing? Whenever i think a lot and plan the drawing when doing abstract or doodling it ends up worse. This seems to apply to me even when i do realism. If i just zone out and stop thinking,no planning i draw fast, detailed and realistic. An example of this would be my 30 minute realistic drawings with a ballpoint pen. I do a scribble technique. I just scribble and put in lines as fast as possible without thinking. For example if you drive the same route everyday eventually you dont think about how to get there, you dont pay attention the road names and you just do it on instinct. (Sometimes i will drive somewhere then when i stop ill forget the entire drive because its instinctual) I feel that i draw based on instinct rather than planning. Whenever i try to plan my mind gets overloaded with information then im unable to draw. If i try to plan sections at a time i have the same issue. Thoughts?
J.Sheetz Artwork in terms of abstract work I can’t give much advice but most of my planning is due to the overall project. I have goals and requirements for this project and it’s all about creating a narrative in some way, there is definitely a time and place to go into things unplanned and a lot of the time I improvise along way even after I have some kind of starting plan. I think for doing these videos and trying to work towards the things I need to then I have no option but to create a sort of system and schedule to work with. Thanks for the comment man
Dan Beardshaw You are welcome. I think its best for everyone to do what is most efficient for them. What works for one person might not work for someone else. As long as you keep creating and striving to improve :)
I haven’t been feeling well the last couple of days so I’ve been saving you video. Thank you for making me smile :) I love how you broke down the process. Is your story set in Tokyo? Or is it a secret? Sorry if I’m being nosing! But no hints this time?! Lol :) As always your work was amazing and I love the details.
I think I have a bad habit with having an idea, attempting it, and when it doesn't look right I give up on it. Causes a lot of lost projects. I also think I don't utilize references often lol
Wow man ive been with u since 40k subs and ur almost at 150k and u shock me with every upload man i have an idea for one of your robot episodes how about robots coming down from space fighting the robots already on earth just throwing it out there cheers
saw a kid draw starwars detailed environments exactly like this in the 7th grade off the bat, no references just paper and pencil. that was back in 2004, to this day I wonder what the hell he's doing, probably works for some big name company making close to six figures.
Do you spend a set amount of time on the thumbnail sketches or continue until the composition feels right? Also a video on the thumbnail stage is a great idea
Lewis Smith I didn’t really do much for this drawing, but for things like the banner on the channel. I would normally do some rough sketches until I get something that feels right. I also like to just go along with stuff and improvise as I go, which probably increases the time it takes for me to finish the outlining stage because I’m always putting down the pencil and thinking what would be good to do here etc haha
Maybe you could redo this video and show clips of the stages you go trough? The was distracting because it did not show what you are talking about. It would make it a lot more clear. Still breathtaking to see you fill in this sketch and improvise on it while working on it.
joostborst I won’t re do the video man but I’ll do separate videos going more in depth on some of these stages like the thumbnailing etc. This was a project update and I’ve decided that I can also make these useful by talking about drawing whilst the footage is on screen:)
I hope you can stick to the point, with that I mean the actual 7 steps and be concise. Kinda confusing while you're drawing and at the same time speaking too much.
