I use swatches. Inspired by your tip to paint with all your colors before choosing them because they look different when they are used than what the container may show.

Huge fan of doing this; for those uncomfortable with doing the painting themselves, there's an app called IMPCAT that uses SVG's images of models to break apart into layers; it then has per-brand color selection capabilities so you can break things down to a basic base-wash-shade-highlight. Miniature Painter Pro is also very good, but that's more for color matching; if you finish setting colors or have an inspirational piece you can color sample and simlar colors from your chosen brands will come up to help find out-of-bottle matches.

THIS!! YES by god ive been looking for a video on this for ages, I just hit up Squidmar, asking him to share his method for doing this. Ive seen him not only uploading photos of his miniatures before painting them, so that he could sketch color to it to come up with a good paint scheme. But Ive also seen him take photos of other great artist work and break down their choices of color by using a tool that grabs a specific color on a spot on a model to show other artist approach,. This is a tool that I want to add to my arsenal quickly.

i've had Procreate on my iPad for years and mainly used it as a doodling canvass or as a quick creative exercise for my kids. I struggle with choosing colours when painting and as a novice, my application of colour theory/blending is hit or miss (often misses). The suggestion of using an app like this was enough of a gem but the informative demonstration of useful and easily accessible tools within Procreate was a welcomed surprise. I learned so much in 10 minutes. This video is easily in my top 5 most useful tips for mini painting. Many thanks.

Another Android software is impcat. Only limiting factor is its painting by area selection, which relies on someone having made the model you want to test paint on as the appropriate file. But, it's great at a pinch for your phone or tablet, and it comes with some free files to test paints on from great sculptors, just not 40k.

I have a quick question and need clarification. Does the fact that it's an rgb screen vs pigments ever effect your outcomes on minis? The basis for this question is in color theory and how light splits to make colors but since we can't paint using light we have to use pigments which reflect light instead of just being light. The big question is if the nature of color theory impacts your minis in any meaningful way or if it generally works out the way you planned.
@LylaMev
@LylaMev 2 года назад
No, it does not change anything, I just paint what I see.

So in procreate how do you create a feathering in a brush. So lets say i have a brush thats 15mm in diameter and i want the centre few pixels to be solid and then fade out towards the edges? So i could trace a line and get a shadowing effect. I had a program years ago that just had a feathering value and i think you could select the direction of the fadeout, is this possible?

I like your idea but i cant stand pintrest i think it is hurting the internet. If i find a picture i like most of the time on pintrest there is nothing telling me who made it and when i search almost all the pics are from pintrest. If i put -pintrest in the search many times the pic isnt even found i think this is because the search engines dont think you need to see every version of the pic and only give us the most seen ones which are on pintrest due to how it works. I would be ok if when you see a pic online and link it to pintrest if it would give a link to the pic but ill see 100 of the same pic all on pintrest and never being able to find out who made it to find more of their work.
