6:10 Distributing extinguishing foam
19:50 Towing Air Antilles
38:30 Raising the Helicopter
46:50 Flights resume
Due to a rather calm North-North-East wind, the Air Antilles aircraft did not fly over the Tourmente roundabout to land but arrived at the other end of the runway, on the side of the bay of Saint-Jean. The pilot then lost control of the aircraft, in particular due to a problem with the landing gear. Leaving the axis of the runway, the plane violently struck a helicopter from the West Indies company, which was parked and empty of all passengers and pilots. The left wing of the Air Antilles aircraft was badly damaged during the collision. Six passengers and two pilots were on board. Fortunately, it was quickly established that only one passenger suffered from a slight trauma. Nevertheless, a psychological support unit has been activated for the attention of passengers and pilots.

Is it just me, or was that the worst emergency response EVER? If they could have breached the fence, the onlookers on the street would have been on the scene faster than the airport personnel. And they would have DONE SOMETHING. This one is a real head scratcher.
@russefrance4869
@russefrance4869 10 месяцев назад
Well, it's not like Heathrow, the emergency crew aren't just sitting there waiting for something to happen. There was no emergency declared so they had to dress, get in the vehicle and drive there...which they did in just over 1 minute. The big question is why were the pax sitting on the aircraft for another 5 minutes?
@mikehanks1399
@mikehanks1399 10 месяцев назад
I kinda get that, but like you said, the passengers were on a crashed aircraft for a very long time. And this crash was right on the flight line, you can see scores of people just standing around gawking. In a typical auto crash, bystanders and other motorists will render aid until the professionals get there. In St. Barth, you're on your own.

@dboard9
@dboard9 10 месяцев назад
@@JohnSmith-yv6eq Crash occurs at :25, the fireman is out of the truck and pulling hose about 1:15 later. The pilots don't even get the right engine shut down until over a minute after impact! And re: "foam cannon" - The truck mounted monitor is typically a 3" nozzle at 250 PSI, it can blast and injure survivors attempting to escape, normally only used to extinguish a substantial fire or cover spilled fuel with foam to prevent ignition. The fireman with the hand line does just that, after determining where the fuel is spilled.

The wind sock on top of the hill shows he was landing with a tail wind. That may explain why he was going so fast near the end of the runway. He was completely in the grass before he crashed into the helicopter. Had he stayed on the runway his breaking would have been more effective than it was in the slick grass.
@joeldumas5861
@joeldumas5861 9 месяцев назад
Almost. Later, another aircraft asks for the wind. At 21:44, ATC replies 030°/8 kt (so heading 210°) when the guy lands beach side on runway 28 (heading 280°). Btw, later traffic will use runway 10. About windspeed, 8 kt ("gentle breeze") is not so strong, but on such a short airstrip every knot matters!
@IslandSimPilot

WTF? This is the most pathetic accident response I have ever seen. I've watched too many episodes of "May Day" to sit on an airplane that just crash landed and is full of Jet-A and starts smoking to sit around and wait for someone to tell me not to open any doors. Are you telling me that everything is fine so stay started? Yeah no. And any damage I do blowing the starboard door will be a rounding error compared to the the bill to repair the rest of the aircraft. See ya!
