Not satisfied with jaunts in trucks, trains and boats I'm asked for my take on aircraft. As is traditional, I then talk about how much commercial air travel sucks, while comparing travelling in "uncouth" American airlines in comparison to UK carriers. This, obviously, is never fully explained so I'll do so now since I dabble with the live rail that is American exceptionalism, briefly enough to (probably) cause a defensive response but not sufficiently to clarify the position. I should stop recording these, but hey, they're fun and sometimes you'll agree, sometimes you won't. That's what makes us different in some ways, the same in others. Anyway, I can't remember whether or not I mentioned by despite the level of incivility aboard an American carrier (with which I sympathise even if I find it unusual) they have better legroom.

All aboard for the Colonel Failure Airlines experience - full length flat beds, free pickup and drop off, no airsickness or airline 'meals' - you'll be there before you know it! My brother and I were once flying together, I'm 6'5" and he was 6'6" and both of us were over 275 pounds. While we were waiting in the gate area they announced that they were doing upgrades to first class for something like $25. We looked at each other and bolted for the check in counter, we both got the upgrades and I'll tell you it was the best flight we ever were on.

I spent three years in a job where I averaged one flight a week. It was hell. Being 6'5"/210lbs didn't help. This was back in the '90's, thank God it wasn't present day air travel. Also, I went for a jaunt in a B-17, Holy Crap the total lack of protection for the crew was mind bending. That's bravery embodied.

I used to work for American Airlines and also worked for another company that serviced multiple other carriers. I would completely agree with your take on passenger attitudes 🤣

787 is the Dreamliner -- it's a lot nicer due to the higher windows (so no bobbing to see outside), and more importantly, it pressurizes to a higher pressure (due to the use of carbon fiber) - so you get less fatigue. Done multiple OZ US trips in them - they are great for long haul. The 777 is used a lot also for long haul (a bit bigger than the 787 - no major difference internally realistically). Got to admit you hit the nail on the head with regards flying. The only good thing is how quickly you get to your destination. Also, as I can't sleep well on a plane, I prefer daytime long-haul flights.

Dreamliner is the 787. It was a response to Airbus and the A380- Airbus thought "big plane go far between (insert big cities here)", Boeing's strategy was "smaller plane to connect more moderate-sized cities to the world" (Memphis-Tokyo was cited as a prime example when Northwest was still around). IIRC, the 777 was the first plane designed exclusively on computers.

My favorite airline to fly on was WardAir - they treated their passengers really well and the food they served was actually something that you actually enjoyed eating. The pilots must have loved their airplanes as when they touched down, often the only way you could tell we had landed was when they hit the brakes and engaged the reverse thrusters. Sadly in the late 1980's WardAir was sold to Pacific Western Airlines and it was down hill from their until eventually it was purchased by Air Canada.

A bi plane is an amazing experience. Went on a ride back in I believe 2005, from the aviation museum outside Seattle and flew over Seattle and the pilot did a few circles around the space needle for me =)

Hahahaha, I wouldn't be surprised if it was in fact American Airlines you were speaking of early in the video. After a long stretch of flying Delta, we took American for this most recent trip and _goodness_ the differences… Someone ahead of me was playing a podcast or whatever without headphones, _in first class_, on an evening flight when it seemed a lot of passengers wanted to nap. I can't sleep on planes either. It's not great for those "overnight" overseas flights that are designed for you to arrive in the morning, having slept en route, and I show up dead tired because I spent the whole time watching movies in a futile attempt to fight insomnia. And btw, we think our country is a bit odd, too. 😉

Have been to Cuba in 2011. Was still amazing if you could avoid all the tourist stuff. Canadians, Spaniards and Frenchmen everywhere. But strolling through the streets and not seeing one single commercial billboard for weeks was amazing as soon as I've noticed it. Venceremos. Hasta la victoria siempre.

Interesting to hear what you say about American air travel - I've flown with jetBlue and American Airlines a number of times, btho domestically and transatalantically, and I found the service is excellent but as you say, the people can be a little "less than quality" - as you American exceptionalism perhaps. Brilliant video by the way too, love the series!

I think it's the "customer is always right" mentality, leading people to be discourteous toward both each other and cabin crew. To file it under exceptionalism is misplaced in this case.

I'm an American and I hate my fellow air PAX domestically. That's why in the US I find myself driving more often than flying, especially anything within 500-600 miles. Or even as far as 1800 miles, even if it takes a few days. I'm 6'5 and can tell you the legroom is absolutely terrible. I've been barely able to sleep on planes and my longest flights have been Chicago-HK-Melbourne and LAX-Melb numerous times. Flying awake for 18 hours makes driving for 18 hours seem insignificant. I may edit this more as the video goes on

I quite like your idea of the biplane, but my, almost certainly not to be fulfilled, dream is a flight in a Lancaster. Cue a big lottery win and an offer to sponsor the BBMF for a couple of floghts, or a trip to Canada to have a go in theirs.

I'm gonna guess here that you flew into Chek Lap Kok airport in Hong Kong and not the [coughs] 'real interesting' original airport at Kai Tak including it's checker board arrival which is a flight arrival that should never be missed, sadly no more.

I have only ever flown with 2 airlines... British Airways and Air Canada. The latter is better. Dreamliner = 787

If you have a chance try turkish airways. I think it was the best flight I have ever been on. They know how to treat the customer.

Well those trips rpthat where required by the company you worked for shortly has to conte against the companies carbon footprint and not yours, since if it wasn't for the company requiring those trips you would not have made them. Ok you might call this accounting trickery but faiar has to be fair.

I used to fly a lot and never really minded it. Then it became politically incorrect to put your seat back in an attempt to get comfortable. Now I can't fly.
