Here is one from 2016 in Estonia www.cnn.com/2016/06/23/politics/a10-warthog-highway-landing-russia-border-estonia/index.html@Inconvenient Truths and here is a Wikipedia article on the concept en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_strip You don’t see it much in the open like this because there is so much roadway on large military reservations to use for this training. What is exceptional here is that it wasn’t conducted on one of those.
@davidgrover5996
@davidgrover5996 3 года назад
I get that you desperately want this to fit your narrative @Inconvenient Truths. (Wow! I have never said that to someone who I wasn’t sure is a woke progressive before.) The only newsworthy part of this is they used a roadway that is open to the public. If they were doing it with helicopters I doubt it would have made the news. They have done this on the roads out here inside the Nevada and Utah bombing ranges for decades. I have relatives in the Air Force who have bitched about such training going all the way back to the Crome Dome days. Finding the news article you require is not going to happen because practicing this inside a military reservation is not newsworthy.

Roads built on military bases are not structurally different from roads built anywhere else @Inconvenient Truths. You are freaking out over nothing unless you expect Canada to invade through or more likely around Michigan. If you think for example this is training for operations against the citizenry why would they be practicing to operate from unsecured state roads where everyone with a deer rifle can take a shot instead of easily secured airbases and airports? You are exactly like the people freaking out about the Red Dawn exercises in the 1970s and 80s or Jade Helm a few years back.

When I was in the Air Guard they were having an A-10 do a flight demonstration for an airshow. A few of my buddies and I had gone to the shooting range on the other side of the base and on the way back we parked our blue Air Force pick-up truck in the middle of an empty field on the other side of the runway from the crowd. We were sitting out there in the middle of the empty field by ourselves waiting for the A-10 to start the demo. When it took of it went into a sharp banking turn and then it leveled out and started coming right at us. It made a high speed pass right over us at about 100 feet and it was going really fast. It then made another sharp turn to line us up again and did another high speed pass right over us. At that point we realized that the A-10 pilot was using our truck as his show center. Eventually he ended up doing 6 high speed passes at low level right over us. We ended up with the best viewing spot for the show and we weren't even planning to be there. Afterwards we found out that the A-10 pilot had spotted our truck sitting in the field as he was taxiing out and that's when he decided to use the truck as his show center point. So we were able to experience what's its like to be attacked by an A-10 and we lived to tell about it.

The Interstate system's primary role was to transport military equipment and have planes land in the event of a war at home. General Eisenhower in WW2 saw the need for a system while he was in Germany and witnessed their Autobahn system.
@jaytrock3217
@jaytrock3217 3 года назад
That is one of those urban myths. Part of it is true, but the plane landing wasn't part of it. It was made to move equipment in case the rail system was attack. The biproduct gave places to land planes, but wasn't design for it.

I remember in Feb of 1981 during winter training ( War Game)at Ft Drum New york. As an 11 Bravo in an M113 APC. Our days consisted of driving around, digging fox holes in frozen ground. Then attacking the enemy company. We had laser things to tell if we got hit. Rinse and repeat for 30 days freezing our butts off. There was one event in particular that has stuck with me all these years. Road marching down a tree-lined forest road. I was manning an M60 in the hatch of the APC the third one of four. Our entire company was on the march. Then we saw them... Banking to the left behind our column . Two A10's Holy chit!!!! No were for us to go. They took out the whole company on the first pass. But they made a second one for good measure. Looked over at my buddy as I was turning off my laser beeper. Good thing this was training. I can only imagine the fear raining down on our enemies.

When the federal interstate system was created in the 1950's under President Eisenhower, there was a requirement that in rural areas outside of major cities every so often there had to be a section 1 mile long that was relatively flat and straight with no bridges or powerlines crossing it so that it could be used as military runways in the event of emergencies/war.
@pdes_
@pdes_ 3 года назад
According to the Federal Highway Administration, this is a myth. '"One in five miles of the Interstate System is straight so airplanes can land in emergencies." This myth is widespread on the Internet and in reference sources, but has no basis in law, regulation, design manual-or fact. Airplanes occasionally land on Interstates when no alternative is available in an emergency, not because the Interstates are designed for that purpose.'
@shawnpeat

Thats the idea of defense in finland. In Russian perspective Finland is so small and after all meanigles land area that it would not be good idea to but most of the Russian troops just for Finland.
