Wow! I'm blown away. The Privateer was just phenomenal. I have to say that I'm left spell bound by all of the historical aircraft that are so lovingly restored. Thanks for bringing us such good videos. As always, a class act.

Oh my....that Privateer in the air just about brought a tear to my eye. Splendid to see such a rare bird take flight! Anyone who would be interested in learning more about the role of the incredibly brave Privateer crews should read " Crew One" by Dennis Scranton and "Above an Angry Sea" by Alan Carey. These Navy crews truly are unsung heroes of the Pacific theater. Thank you to Airailimages for posting this up. What a treat.

Some of the rarest warbirds in the world . From the Allison powered P-51 all the way through the Privateer.That airshow is on my bucket list. Thank you so much. Really liked the slow mo musical break in there. The music gave it a sense of haunting remembrance of all those brave lads in WWII. My Grandfather was a Seabee and he said they used to call the Avenger "the beer hauler". They didn't have refrigeration when the Seabee's first landed, so they would fill the bomb bay up with beer, the pilot would take it up to 15 to 20 thousand feet for about 15 minutes and wala, ice cold beer. Thank you and God Bless from Florida.
@airailimages
@airailimages 7 лет назад
Thanks for your comment. That's a great story about cooling beer in an Avenger. Some of the bomber guys in the Pacific would haul ice cream ingredients to altitude for the necessary chilling.

Your quite welcome. Yes, I've heard about the ice cream as well. but I guess my Grandfather and his comrades had their priorities. LOL

Spawn 1960 A -36 Apache
@Spawn-td8bf

I was basing my identification on the pitot tube design and placement which on an Apache was towards the tip and straight out where as the early P-51's like those flown by the RAF in the early days were about 2/3 from the wing root and protruded down with a 90 degree bend forward. I was unable to see the air brakes. The "Mrs. Virginia" is listed as a P-51A on the registry of surviving P-51's and is owned by the POF.

The P-51 was powered by the British Merlin engine and the American made Packard Merlin engine. Not an Allison

wonder what the airforce would have today if they had not destoryed the flying wings back in the late 40"s ? I wonder why the army air corps didn't use more inline engines in their planes in WW-II then they did? was it a HP or design factor that caused them not to use them? love to see those planes from by gone days fly. Thanks for a very outstanding video

The US had good reason to use radial engines over inline engines. Initially inline engines were used in the new interceptors coming out (back when everyone thought that the heavy bomber would always get through) because they allowed the aircraft to be sleek and aerodynamic, thus it was assumed they would always be fast. However, the sleek profile inline engines provided turned out not to be as big of an advantage as people expected, especially in the face of new radial development which churned out some very powerful engines. Many designers found out that any aerodynamic drag issues could be compensated for by just using a more powerful engine. Furthermore, inline engines were not nearly as robust as a radial and had complex liquid cooling systems that just created another point of failure. This was especially bad for the US Navy, since they needed tough, reliable engines that could be counted on not to fail after being hit by just one bullet in the wrong spot (there are cases of radial engines having entire cylinders shot off and still being able to run. You cant do that with an inline). Radials were also cheaper to build, and were readily available at all times. When you think of their reliability, their simplicity, their ruggedness, and their power, it is no wonder why they were the engine of choice for most of our best aircraft.

The privateer the same aircraft that we saw in firefighting marking afew yrs ago? Also THANKS a million. We live in awesome times for warbird lovers. The amount and type of aircraft we see grace the skies today is incredible and wouldn't be possible without the hard work and dedication of organizations like Planes of fame. So from a very appreciative American Thank you so very much.

I all ways wondered why they never turbo charged the Allison 1710 in the mustang they did it to the p38 so why not the p51 ??
@wilburfinnigan2142
@wilburfinnigan2142 4 года назад
Michael Richter There was NO ROOM in the fuselage for the large and clumbersome first gen turbos and intercoolers. That was a huge fuk up by USAAF procurement to rely on turbocharging rather than a 2 stage mechanical supercharger. USE the 2 stage supercharger was invented in the USA !! NOT by RR !!!! The Allison V1710 was a hell of an engine simplier than a merlin and had several more modern features such as a roller rocker assmy and stronger rods. a 2 stage mechanical supercharger would have made the Allison a better more powerful engine above 20,000 FT under 20,000 ft the Allison Mustang kicked the shitfires and RR asses royally !!!

Does the PB-4 privateer have the same engines as the B-24 bomber in WW2?
@GSMSfromFV
@GSMSfromFV 7 лет назад
I believe they both had the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines.
@airailimages
@airailimages 7 лет назад
Originally they both had P&W R-1830s; the civilian firebomber Privateers were later modified with R-2600 engines and cowlings from B-25s.
@plunmeister1093

It may be the Privateer, but doesn't it look like the B32?
@airailimages
@airailimages 7 лет назад
Especially when the Privateer is in silver. Have you noticed how each manufacturer favored the same shapes on different airplanes, even if they were different sizes? The curved fairing on the Privateer vertical fin and the curved fairing on the B-32 do look similar, even though they are both different aircraft. Then take a look at Boeing tails of the era, and the B-17 and B-29 look like the same family.
@wilburfinnigan2142
@wilburfinnigan2142 4 года назад
plunmeister The Privateer was a navy version of the B24, obvious difference was the single tail and not obvious was the high altitude Turbochargers were deleated from the engines, leaving only the mechanical supercharger !!!

Does anybody know any pilot that flew both the B-24 and the Privateer? If so did they relate which of the two was the nicer plane to fly, and why they thought so? Love to hear that discussion. Thanks
@wilburfinnigan2142
@wilburfinnigan2142 4 года назад
taketimeout I doubt any pilot during the war would have flown both as the PB4Y was a Navy plane and the B24 was an Army. Maybe some of the ferry pilots might have flown both !!!!

9:57 one is fire walling it, the other is cruising, and the other is about to stall.
@UAL012
@UAL012 3 года назад
I'm not so sure about that. They're probably doing about 200-250 knots and yes the F-35 is throttled back but not even close to stalling speed. The P-38 cruised at 275 MPH but if firewalled could do a hell of a lot quicker than that.
