Hey, one important note about Del meeting Neal's wife at the end. The movie they shot was way too long and they wound up having to cut a lot out. A really important subplot disappeared in the process. Because Neal kept coming up with excuses for why he hadn't made it home, his wife finally realized that he must be having an affair. When Del showed up in the flesh, he was living proof that Neal had been telling the truth all along. DEL SAVED THEIR MARRIAGE.

But a few days later we were driving through the rural Midwest and we happened upon a family painting on their bright red barn in white letters “We Love You John Cand,” and they were finishing the Y.. It was amazing..

Who on Earth would stoop low enough to attack someone's dog over something like that? Pets are OFF LIMITS, full stop! Especially if they're your babies. 🐕🐕 I am SO glad this movie made it into the rotation!! This is a movie with tons of genuine laughs, but it also hits you right in the feels. Back in 1987, debit cards didn't exist, and credit cards were something people usually only had 1 of. Long before the digital age, that goofy looking contraption was what they used to swipe over a credit card, to create an imprint with carbon on multiple forms that the retailer could tear apart, giving one sheet to the customer for their records. Chicklits were square pieces of gum that were popular back in the 80s, and when rotary phones were still around, some hotels would put locks on them to prevent customers from placing long-distance calls. Since there were no cell phones, whoever owned the landline had to pay the bill, and long distance calls were more expensive back then. I am really happy that you liked this movie! I waited all day to be able to watch your reaction after work, and I was not disappointed. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

I watched this movie as a kid so many times, but it was from a VHS recording I made from a TV edit. So I didn't see the uncensored version until I was much older, and that scene at the car rental place cracked me up. The moment Neal's wife meets Del originally had a deeper meaning to it. In the original cut, she started suspecting Neal was cheating on her, and that every time he called and told her he was with Del, she got increasingly suspicious. They decided that all didn't work very well, but yeah, when that character meets Del, she's relieved to learn Neal wasn't cheating on her.

FYI - Everybody - This movie does have a codex, aka stinger, aka after credit scene. Glad you got to witness pure comedy gold and one of the greatest to do it in one of my favorite classics!! Hughe’s wrote this script in 3 days because similar things happened to him on a single trip when he was an ad exec before his film career. Happy you discovered an old carbon copy imprint credit card machine too. This movie has always had a special place in my heart but always hit me hard, especially the closing minutes after John Candy’s death. Great cameos strewn throughout. I’m surprised you didn’t recognize the car rental agency bus driver’s voice. Listen to it again and see if it sounds familiar. Sorry I missed the livestream where Rom was being mistreated because I would have surely stepped up to the plate for that pup!! No place for that here! 12:55 "What the hell is that?" It's a credit card imprint machine. You used to take credit cards and run this over them to imprint the number and name onto a credit card slip. In the Olde Days there was carbon paper between the the merchant's copy and your copy, and then there was an advance where ink bubbles were embedded in the paper and you had "carbonless forms". The former often led to the question, "Do you want your carbons?".
@bradpriebe9218
@bradpriebe9218 Год назад
JL that's actually the way they used to "run you card". They'd put it on that machine, with a slip underneath that had several carbon copy sheets in it, then push that lever over top of it (there's a roller on the bottom of it that presses the paper and carbon sheets down onto the raised letters and numbers of the card). You get one copy and the merchants keep one copy which they send into the card company (VISA, MC, whatever) and the card company pays them whatever is on the receipt. Used to take a lot longer.

First of all, Romulus is a sweet boy who has a great big heart just full of love, and he loves the peoples. His brother is a sweet boy too, and he loves to protect his family. So nobody should be saying unkind things about either doggo, because they are good puppies, period! Now, that credit card rack machine is what was used before they introduced electronic card readers that read the magnetic stripe on the back of the card, and sometimes they’re still used when card readers are down or the system is offline or there’s some other technical issue with it. The receipt should have the dollar amount of the purchase entered on it in the space provided. The clerk then puts the card in a little space on the rack for it, puts the carbon paper receipt down over it, runs the rack handle over the card, and the handle rolls across the carbon paper receipt and copies the embossed card numbers. Then it’s taken out, the clerk hands the card back to the customer, the customer signs the receipt, and then the clerk separates the store copy and the customer copy and hands the customer his/her copy of the receipt. The rotary dial telephone in the motel room with the lock on it? Yeah, they used to do that in some places because people abused them and ran up huge phone bills, especially calling long distance. Back in the day telephone service (especially long distance) could be very expensive. It got cheaper after the Bell System was broken up in the early 80s (Google it), and now today it’s insanely cheap compared to how it used to be.

This movie has so much heart in the midst of the madness and comedy. John Hughes knew how to tell a story and send a message in the process. There are a number of cameos from actors in Hughes previous films. It seems you recognized that. I don't have the time to share all the details on each cameo but you can look it up at your leisure. The stories that went into making this are fascinating.

I loved your take on this movie as when you were talking about special friends, your dog wanted a pet and be with you also. I thought that was cool! Another very good John Candy movie is Cool Runnings, about the Jamaican Bobsled Team of 1988. It was very good! Please do that movie for this awesome channel ASAP. God Bless! :)

That weird thing is what was used before swipe terminals. It takes the credit card impression (numbers, details etc) and multiple layers, one for the customer, one for the business to take to the bank and not sure what the others are... don't ya just appreciate technology 😀😀

"You shared a motel room with a complete stranger? Are you crazy?" "Not yet. But I'm getting there." Happy Thanksgiving! 😎 🦃 Fun Fact: After the credits, Neal's boss is still at his desk analyzing the ads, his Thanksgiving dinner sitting on his desk. New House Fact: Neal's (Steve Martin) house was also a set built from scratch, consisting of seven rooms, and taking five months to complete. It ended up costing $100,000, which angered Paramount executives, and caused turmoil on the set. Crazy Rant Fact: The Marathon Car Rental scene is exactly one minute long from the time Steve Martin starts his tirade to the time the attendant ends the scene. In that sixty seconds, the "F" word is used nineteen times. The film would've easily been rated PG or PG-13 by the MPAA, if it weren't for this one scene.
