Those dwarf planets did not move away from the sun. They moved away from earth for their own safety. It's because Chuck Norris was born during those time. Legend has it that right after after Chuck Norris came out of the womb, he said, "this solar system ain't big enough for all of us", thus the draft planets started backing away. That also explains why there's no sign of life in Mars and Venus (well, they used to) even though they are in the Goldilocks zone. That's my hypothesis.

How odd that the same guy who demoted Pluto discovers (hypothesizes) Planet 9. Had Pluto not been demoted, this would be planet X or Niburu. Pretty weird, neh? Nox = No. X?

Historically, ''Planet X'' was the hypothetical huge planet outside the orbit of Neptune that was supposed to perturb the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. They searched for it for decades and in the end they only discovered poor tiny little Pluto. It wasn't until 1989 when the famous spaceprobe Voyager 2 made a flyby of Neptune that that planet's precise mass became known. There WAS no perturbation . There was no need for a huge massive yet unknown planet. The idea of planet x died out slowly - until the emergence of internet and RU-vid etc. ''X'' means ''unknown'' by the way, not 10.

Thanks! - Just got into your content, I know most of the stuff you are teaching in this channel, because since I was around 13 I've been interested in Sciences and Math, but It's great to hear it again, and in a much more entertaining way! Now for this video, I am really thankful for this, because this news was quite nice to hear yesterday, and I don't know much about the hypothesis yet, atleast not this version of it, I know more about the Nemesis hypothesis. Thanks for the video, and I hope to see more great content like this, I really enjoy your "History of Spaceflight" series, specifically because I don't know much about rockets, and I love to learn new things :) P.S. - Sorry if my English is not perfect, I am from Finland originally and have recently moved to Canada!

If there is 9th planet so far away in the solar system then there must be even more of them maybe a lot father away but still inside the system. And if some big object made a flyby in our system, then what if there were more of these objects? This could explain why the orbits are stretched in different directions.

Could planet 9 possibly have been a rouge planet? I'm aware of planetary migration, but how is it even possible for any planet that size to suddenly migrate that far? You could argue that its been bullied by the current gas giants way back when, but that still doesn't explain it's crooked and uneven orbit.

Here is the challenge with your proposal. If you have an object pass through the solar system you can get elliptical orbits however those objects (as you can see) still come back to where they started. So their perihelion would still be where they started. Sedna et al do not come back to the inner solar system. That makes it tough to get that with just one pass through. Its perihelion is still quite large.
@Armuotas
@Armuotas 8 лет назад
Try launching the Nemesis from above/below the plane of the Solar System. Stars come from all kind of random directions, not just from the "side". That would also mess with the inclination. A quick pass through the densest part of the ring might swing some objects into wild orbits and leave the rest (and the planets) intact.

I find the flyby theory more realistic than the actual theory of Planet X itself. It seems much more believable considering WISE already conducted their search for an astronomical anomaly, even though they were searching for something much larger. If an asteroid or planetoid was thrown out by some cosmic occurrence and it did pass by the Solar system then it would explain the elliptical orbits we see beyond Neptune without being concerned by a proposed theory of a ninth planet that remains elusive.
@aresmars2003
@aresmars2003 8 лет назад
Very nice simulator. Flinging TNO into new orbits is relatively harmless, but a more dramatic question is what affect a brown dwarf might have on P9's safe outer orbit. That is, if an interaction dropped it into a steep elliptical orbit, it would interact with the inner solar system and threaten everything. So I imagine you could just test that and show a p9 slowed into a perihelion below 40AU, and watch what happens over the next million years or so! :O Of course an even more likely outcome of a brown dwarf encounter would send p9 into escape velocity. (And all this also relates to how P9 got into such a high orbit, without escaping, so it would probably need some escaping body, whether a P10 which is now lost OR a brown dwarf flyby or both!)

Interesting. I wonder how that is gonna turn out. Anton, I remember you asked me about the other planets with such elliptical orbits when I talked about my own little Extra-solar capture Hypothesis. I didn't have an answer then, but I think I might have one now. Perhaps Sedna was a moon or something of the massive planet that whizzed by and was captured by the Solar System as it passed. Either that or sometimes rouge planets pass by or are captured by the Solar System, the ones that are captured, hypothetically Sedna, have extremely elliptical orbits and their capture tugged at the orbits of the other dwarf planets in the area. In the end, it would depend on the composition of Sedna.

maybe the cause of the highly-elliptical orbit is that they are very close to the sun before and was slingshoted away from the sun when it was becoming a star instead of a protostar or maybe it was slingshoted away because it was very very very very close to the sun before.

It is is possible there might be a Planet Nine. As far as I know, any observations of that planet would have to be done in the infra-red. I was about to add "unless, of course, Planet Nine was a radio source." I don't think that's likely, though. What I do think is that Planet Nine will have moons, exactly like Uranus and Neptune do, and they might be very interesting moons too. . There might be dramatic winds and storms on the planet, if it exists. If that planet is out there, it might be outside the plane of the zodiac at this time. What the Planet Nine hypothesis does is to suggest that there are unexplored worlds in the outer solar system which haven't even been observed. The age of outer Solar System exploration may be far from over. I find that very exciting.

Its kind a hard to believe that urn/neptune where pushed or kicked towards the kuiper belt by jupiter, is kind a hard to swallow taking in the consideration the huge star that we have in the center of out s system. And saying the 9-th was pushed also by jupiter really makes no sense. the 9-th is so far away that (personal opinion) it was a loose planet caught by our sun...

sorry if this was answered already, but any specific reason we think the little dudes with highly elliptical orbits were thrown out of pre-existing circular orbits in our system, as opposed to captured from outside? is it because there are too many of them? or they have the same composition as everything else? like, is it pretty much accepted that they were already here, therefore something must have thrown them off? either way, i was really excited when i read about planet x, and this video really helped me conceptualize and understand the hype. :)

Is it possible that this possible planet 9 is in fact the burned out core of a star? I don't know anything about astropsychics, but would an invisible perfect sphere diamond type object be massive enough to create these orbit anomalies? Or what about some super-magnetic object that affects some orbits more than others?
@WetPig
@WetPig 8 лет назад
I dont think its possible because what you are saying would mean its captured which is highly unlikely because it very massive and the second option is if we were in a binary system before, but in that case the sun should be orbiting the star in a binary system and we have no evidence of that ever happening and also we would know if a star in a binary orbit around the sun exploded some time ago.

Very good video! I happened upon your channel by chance and I was happy to do so. I am curious, however, why so many scientist, including Brown, dismiss the possibility that this planet could have been a rogue planetary body which simply got snagged by the Sun's gravitational effects and settled in a distant orbit? With an estimated 100k times more rogue planets than stars the Milky Way alone, the probability that this (or even any of our known planets) might not be our own. For all we know, Nox could be the happy product of the Centauri system. Shall check out your other videos. I like your approach. :)
@williammaddock9179
@williammaddock9179 8 лет назад
Planet 9 was not "kicked out" of the main solar system, since there are no artifacts in the orbits of the planets that would be large enough to have done the kicking. Far more likely, it was captured from either rogue status, or from a dwarf star that passed through the Oort cloud in astronomically recent times.
@Tlactl
@Tlactl 8 лет назад
+William Maddock Actually scientists simulate the early solar system a lot and it is more likely for it to start with another planet and have it flung out than to not start with it at all
@williammaddock9179
@williammaddock9179 8 лет назад
Diamond Miner Animaniac There are no artifacts of such an encounter having happened. Scientists do not get to spout just-so stories just because people call them scientists. There needs to be real live evidence to back them up.
@Tlactl
@Tlactl 8 лет назад
William Maddock There isn't real evidence that we captured it either so both theories are on thin ice
@williammaddock9179
@williammaddock9179 8 лет назад
Diamond Miner Animaniac Actually, the total lack of evidence for planet-planet scattering is evidence that something other than that is what happened. One of those possibilities is capture. Another is formation in place, but that would require something like a star passing close by to throw the outer planet into a different orbit than the near-circular one it would have started with, and, as I wrote before, there is a study claiming that a red dwarf star passed through our Oort cloud in astronomically recent times. That red dwarf star would serve either of the scenarios I have here mentioned.

While there is no real doubt that there are more planets in our solar system, the Niburu/PlanetX debate is a waste of time. The system has already made its closest approach and moved on. The orbital mechanics in no way support even the possibility of a mini-solar system with a red or brown dwarf star and multiple planets passing close to the sun. The orbit would have to be much farther out, otherwise it would lose its planets and moons as it passed close to the sun. The observed effects have already duplicated themselves clearly indicating a very wide passage on both sides of our orbit. I have been observing this in nature, outside seeing the exact same perturbing of the moons orbit as a repeat event 12 years apart. This also supports the probability of a wider orbit and "action at a distance" theory which is now widely accepted as fact. Once the perturbed effects are over, the orbits right themselves, again observed during this most recent full moon. The position of the "Rabbit in the Moon" is now upright again as it has not been in long time. The frenzy to build underground shelters is to protect against asteroid impact as we are in an ongoing swarm, many passing a hairs width away.

First of all, i love the idea of calling the planet Nox because of how fitting it is but I would also like to point out that Nyx, the Ancient Greek equivalent of Nox, is actually the mother of Nemesis.

You have to agree that it exists.. Next you have to agree it has a crazy orbit. As in so what!

Do you think that f some of the smaller objects passed close to each other they could have hurled them selves out there.

Great post Anton..does the Sandbox have the functionality where you can drill down and look how the Sun will be affected on its path around the SSB if planet 9 exists. My calcs suggest the Sun would move out a further .5 to 4 million kilometers.

So what are the specs of your computer? Mine has 1gb of graphics & still can't handle the simulation with all possible dwarf planets.

It should be called planet Snow White, on account of all the dwarfs under her influence.

By definition, planet x can not be a planet for the same reason Pluto lost it's planet status.
