A word on the score... I consider myself a very harsh critic and will always give you lovely people the most honest and critical views I can and hope to bring as much balance as possible too. Because of that, a score of 6 or 7 on Cockney Gamer might be a score of 8 or 9 elsewhere. To be clear, Planet Crafter is an absolutely wonderful game and you'll have a great time playing it as I did. I just don't think it's quite there to be recognised as one of gaming's great survival sims. Love to you all, Reggie xxx

I've played through this up until insects 3 times now, I really do enjoy this game and as more updates drop I will play it again, but I don't think its as good as Subnautica.

You could maybe play on the mode where it has perma death if you wanted to make the game harder, 1 life 1 mistake and your at game over, you could also set it to lose everything you carry on death as well, you can make the game harder if you want to

Funny how you dropped this vid today, mate, 'cause I just bought a copy earlier today and done a few hours of gaming in it. It's good, imo

@DocProctor it gets prettier for sure. Again though, the pacing is a bit off for me. There’s seems a bit of a lull in the middle but once you get through that it flies by.

@@cockneygamer I've started getting grass out now, so it's looking way better. Just gotta get a bunch more grass spreaders out to make me a neato lil' meadow while I wait for a lake to appear

anyone who played both knows its not even close. planet crafter is clearly a passion project but you can tell the lack of experience of the developers compared to what subnautica went through, topping that off with an even more ambitious sequel. that said im VERY looking forward to what miju games has in store, over time as their funds increase im sure it will reflect in the quality and scale. keep up the good work!

Couldn’t agree more with you here. Subnautica is S Tier and Planet Crafter is B grade. Taking nothing away from Planet Crafter, it’s still highly enjoyable in its own right and I wish them well for the future. Looking forward to what they conjure up.

I played it a bunch last week, and I’d describe it as a semi idle game. When getting to the mid and late game, I would let it run during the night, just to be able to get one or two new blueprints. It got annoying quickly. I agree with you, the pacing is all over the place!
@cockneygamer
@cockneygamer 5 месяцев назад
Yes I hear a lot of people letting it run to get some unlocks. It can be painful at times.

This game gives me astroneer vibes tbh. Re score, sorry but I ignore numbers as I prefer context, which you provide very well. Worth a sub

I remember playing the Prologue version of this game. It boots you out once the planet gets to a certain stage of terraforming, no animation/still showing what the planet looks like when you finish. There is an update to it, and a demo, but I have to wonder if they actually updated the end of demo scene, or it's still the same.
@rivernoodl
@rivernoodl 5 месяцев назад
I actually played the demo myself before buying it a couple days ago. The game now lets you continue playing, it's just that the terraforming value caps at a certain amount. You get a notification that you've reached the end of the demo and if you want to keep terraforming, buy the game! It let me pick up where I left off too. really nice touch.

I just tried the demo, and what I thought is that it feels 10 times more simplistic than Subnautica, with also a much lower overall production quality, and all of that like 8 years after Subnautica. So currently I'm in the process of trying to understand if the highly simplistic feel and look of the game could still translate to a good amount of fun and engagement - or if perhaps later parts of the game are less simple. But the graphics is not bad actually, I expected worse.

Great points. So full disclosure, I’ve played the beta to the end game and it gets way way prettier. For the purposes of the video review I restarted and did a new save file to focus exclusively on co op. That in itself will lend itself to being a little uglier in the earlier game. The issue is, even when booting up Subnautica, it feels the newer game to me. More polish. Looks better. More intuitive. But if you even have a dabble of interest in Subnautica and enjoyed it, then I do think Planet Crafter is worth it at the cheap price it currently is. It’s definitely a nice compliment to have in your collection.

Haha.... so usually I edit out the dead sounds or little breaths etc. In this case I was talking for so long from my script that I didn't have the heart to re-record it... so unfortunately/fortunately you got my childish snigger.

Planet Crafter absolutely has it's rough edges and is a little ugly at times. Well, most of the time actually, but I've just looked it up and I have more than twice the playtime with Planet Crafter than I have with Subnautica. (The original Subnautica that is, we don't talk about Below Zero! That doesn't even get to a quarter of the time.) And I think, at least for me, the major motivator and difference is, the ability to really shape/terraform the world. Even though it's really basic, kind of unrealistic, and wonky at times. Subnautica has the better story, though, hands down! (Again, not Below Zero!)

Could not agree more… it’s sort of ugly but also rather beautiful. Especially towards the end. I too seem to have done a load of hours here vs Subnautica even though I see more of its faults. I think what planet crafter nails is the sheer addiction. Appreciate the comment.

So then... setting all the pompous "meh meh meh meh" critiques aside, by FAR the easiest way they could have added a ton of value to the game would have been to focus heavily on base construction. To hell with fending off nasties. If building features are done WELL, you can build a whole fanbase just around that. P. S. The sound is fine...

why to people keep trying to compare this to subnautica, It's NOTHING like it - in any way.
@cockneygamer
@cockneygamer 6 месяцев назад
I mean it’s very much like it. Both survival game with the same basic attributes like oxygen, water, food. You make habitats which look very similar in how they are built by pod and design. It’s off world. You get resources in the same way. You even craft in a little life pod with the same machine thing and the beginning of the story is almost identical (crash landed life support pod). And the story is delivered to you through messages. Oh and there are crashed ships to explore. Edit: that is by no means an exhaustive list!

@cockneygamer your just listing the basic features 99% of survival games have. You dont go swimming for your entire playthrough. There are not jump scare moments. Your reshaping a barren planet with some survival elements along the way. Also, subnautica is the top in its very small niche, waterworld survival games

@@imslightlybaked4575 it might not be like subnautica but i think it took a few notes from the game at least. Also its just his opinion
@cockneygamer
@cockneygamer 6 месяцев назад
@@imslightlybaked4575 sorry for the late reply but I would still disagree that I’ve just listed out other survival games. For example, Valheim is very different to No Man’s Sky, which is very different to Grounded, which is very different Project Zomboid. The similarities between Planet Crafter and Subnautica are clear as day… you only need look at the base building and the way you select living pods. The way messages are delivered. As mentioned in the review, Planet Crafter absolutely stands on its own two legs. I also mentioned it has a lot of things that differ, the main one being the terraforming which is a standout feature. But none the less, there is a LOT they have in common. I appreciate your comment and thoughts though!

Never apologise for disagreeing with me mate. Your view is as valid as mine! It’s a solid game mind you, I highly recommend it. But even after all these years, Subnautica still is king.
