@@ARTooNooREF 3. Same boat here, lol! I'd love to know why the youtube algorithm associates them! I can guess its something like "Old stuff. 4:3 aspect ratio. Anthro character involved at some point", but thats just me guessing.
This pilot probably has the weirdest pacing I've seen in that it feels like the second episode of a serialized cartoon. Even when it first aired I remember watching it as a kid and thinking "wait was there a prior episode, what's going on"
Technically it's no more than what happens with other studios, but those pilots never see the light of day beyond the studio itself and small focus groups. Oh Yeah! Cartoons was created specifically to give people a chance to show their pilots to everyone so that the audience can see new and unusual shows and they can better gauge how well it might be received. It's a shame that it only ran for four years, especially when you think of how much we got out of it!
@@batlrar That's kinda the problem with anthology series like what a cartoon or "oh yeah cartoons" they show so many cartoon pilots but realistically only 1 or 2 are gonna get greenlit even if some others were liked alot, and with oh yeah cartoons it was chalkzone, fairlyoddparents and teenage robot. It kinda makes you wonder what coudlve been if they spaced things out more instead of spamming shorts day after day because there were some great pilot that could have become series but that'll never happen now.
Thank you for posting this. I saw it maybe once or twice after it originally aired, and it's been in the back of my mind, more than half-forgotten, for almost fifteen years. I remember being so disappointed that no follow-up was made. Now I know I didn't imagine it. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
I'd been thinking about this show, on rare occassions for a very long time. I don't think I ever even saw it a second time. I kept hoping it'd get picked up like Fairly Oddparents was. Or that I'd even just see the pilot on Oh Yeah Cartoons again. I never did. But ever few years, I'd think of it. This is the first time I've actually seen it in 25 years. I have no idea why it's stuck with me for so long. Maybe it's because of the hints of a greater mystery, with the dream-inspired map. Maybe it was the characters. But it did, and I still think it's a quite promising pilot, and it's a huge shame nothing more ever came of it. Still, I'm glad to have finally seen it again.
I'm sitting here at 2AM, completely pissed off because this show never got greenlit, so now I'm left with a 26 year old cliffhanger to a genuinely interesting show that hasn't been solved and never will be. OH if only Jamie sent this to Cartoon Network
CN wouldn't have picked it up either. 🤷 CN at this point in time was strictly an in-house production for their cartoons. Aka if it wasn't coming from Hanna-Barbera (later renamed Cartoon Network Studios) they weren't interested.
Something about this one stuck with me, the character designs were a little "off" but that's what made them memorable With some tweaking this could have been an amazing series
I remember this pilot! I spent ages wondering if there was even a part 2 MADE, if it was planned. I wonder why it never got picked up. This would've made a boss show; very clever, addicting premise and characters. Meh...nothing phenomenally good ever stays on TV anyway.
I saw this as a kid and was so sad there was no part 2- no one has ever been able to tell me what it was so I started to think I imagined it. It was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen back then. Thank you so much for sharing this, I love it so much!
This is such a groundbreaking pilot, I mean they even sprang for the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Michael Keaton for voice acting, Na on real shit, I grew up watching bootleg VHS tapes of pre-recorded Nickelodeon cartoons my aunt made, "Mainly because we were poor as fuck". My own personal quote btw, this cartoon seems like a fever dream, I didn't even know it really existed until now thank RU-vid, also homeboy who uploaded this🙌🙌❤️❤️❤️
A Cartoon that good on television would surpass the proposed budget limit. The fact is, this was done when cartoons were still hand drawn and had to sell toys in order to recoup loss and make a profit. It also suffers from "pacing issues", not for a mystery/adventure story, but it doesn't fit the other Oh Yeah Cartoon molds. There is hardly any action, and the characters are very similar in color tone as compared to other shorts. It was the best short, but being the best wont get you picked up.
I for one don't think it would've been stupid. Actually, it would've been clever for the show to take place in the desert because: A) It alludes to the stereotypical dog's habit to dig B) It's a brilliant homage to archeologist digging sites C) Roswell, home of UFO sightings, is in the desert D) This would've enriched the show with Kate's backround of growing up in desert areas, like kids from Australia or Wyoming
>This was pitched in 1998 Somewhere a College graduating Genndy Tartakovsky is taking detailed notes about "Dog Archeologists" for his inspiring new show he'll be pitching in 2001. Something about a Samurai trapped in the Future
I know I’m 4 years late, but I find any connection between this and Samurai Jack is purely coincidental. He was already working on Dexter and PPG for a few years before this aired as well
Wish this got greenlit but I can tell why this didnt get picked up. It looks expensive to make and Nickelodeon wasnt really interested in serialized shows at the time. Still I wish this was a show. Love the theme.
This just pop up in my recommendations. It looks like a second rate short, but for some reason I was 1000 times more interested in watching this pilot than 95% of modern garbage. Music, character design and natural live dialogue are the strengths of this project. It's a shame we won't see a continuation.
Waah! I loved this when I was a kid! I always waited for more until I realized it was just a pilot that was never picked up... :( Btw... Talking of familiar voice actors: Kate has the same voice as Reggie from Rocket Power! :D
I like the stripey crazy dog best :3 this could have been awesome, it reminds me of a show called "Brats of the Lost Nebula" that aired briefly on kids WB that could have been great too. It ran for like, 2 or 3 episodes in america and I think 12 in canada and I only got to see the first one and part of the second, but its stuck with me since.
Kate looks like a homely Chippette after she grew up. I once dated a girl who looked like her: she wasn't bad. One of the major things I like is that Billy West did the voice of Max: and of course is most prominently known for voicing Fry on Futurama. He's just got that cartoon voice that works well with so many characters..
@MizuTakishima3 You're absolutely right it just puzzled me that they didn't make another part of this short. Its awesome great storyline, great characters, and awesome voice actors. This should've made this into a series.
Wow! I'd heard about this years ago but never got to see it till now. This show would have bee SO MUCH bigger than Hey Arnold or Rocket Power IMO. Their was way more potential with the scifi theme
Sounds like it should be called "The Phoenix theory": In this allegory, the phoenix is born a new, beautiful bird. But the longer it lives, the more stagnant, old and decrepit it grows, to the point that its only a senile shell of its former self. One day, it builds a nest of flammable spices and "LIGHT ME", burns itself to perish in the flames! And from its ashes, a new phoenix will crawl from its remains, as gorgeous as before!
They really should have made a TV series out of this, just like The Fairly Oddparents and Chalkzone. And it should have been called Kate and the Space Dogs.
This show looked like it had a lot of potential & yet they let it go, It really could've been great it had a good plot, along with some great animation.
Doing my once-every-whenever-I-feel-like scanning over my old tapes. This is one of the best preserved I have - along with Longhair & Doubledome and that other WEIRD Gnatovich toon. Nice to see tape isn't the last refuge for the Great One-Offs of CN ;) You can never tell what's gonna be cool tho, I thought SpongeBob was twaddle until "Sweet Victory". Kids'll be watching that for as long as video is entertainment....
I did comment on the other cartoon called Fathead and if you’re all wondering about Planet Kate. Maybe it didn’t turn out to be a great success for the animators either.
Ever since this was aired in my country, I always dreamed of watching this once again. Perhaps due to me have great deal of interest in alien invasion films or games like Independence Day or Destroy All Humans!!! i was hyped when watching this
It will probably be by 2015 that a new cartoon comes out that has a dark atmosphere again. As the trend is going, there will be more and more cute shows that will eventually over saturate the airwaves. That is until it burns itself out and something gritty and fresh takes the scene.
I swear there has to be another part to this somewhere. It's too familiar. Like the bitchy girl dog I know I've seen her in something else along with the dog who liked to dig. God this show had a neat art style for it's time. Would kill for this to be on today
