well it is a dwarf planet so technically a planet but it is not a full sized planet so planet 9 will be the 9th full size planet. There is an important distinction. No one is hung up on Pluto losing it's planet status.

Think about it. Galaxies are clusters of stars that emit plenty of light so we can see them at great distances. This theoretical planet is in the extreme outer region of our solar system too far away to reflect any light from our sun and therefore invisible to optical telescopes.
@@FortyFresh Eh. It makes complete sense when you look at relative sizes and how much of the sky is taken up by the objects in question. Then consider that we aren't specifically looking for galaxies in that manner. Sometimes we look at stars/galaxies that we already know are there, and sometimes we just point a telescope at a patch of sky and then look at the pictures to see what we got. Both very different than trying to find a specific object that could be in any direction.

Two different questions honestly. When we say where are all the aliens we aren't expecting to see them, we are expecting to see communications from them. Planet Nine, if it exists, is much harder to detect because it's likely very distant and faint compared to planets orbiting other stars. Telescopes are better at spotting large, bright exoplanets in distant star systems.

I thought planet X was actually planet 10 in Roman numbering due to Pluto being considered a planet until recently. When I went to school there were 9 planets.
or we can see the transit of planets passing between us and its home star by measuring periodic dips of light. That only helps us find planets that are close to their home star in other systems though. Its difficult for us to find planets that are far from their home star in both our own solar system, and distant solar systems.
Odd isn't it? They can tell you the mass and atmosphere of planets thousands of light years away but can't see if there's another planet in our own solar system. A bit like confidently predicting the climate decades from now but unable to accurately predict the weather more than a few days away.
@mjsullivan56 - Not really odd when one thinks about it. Planets in distant galaxies are only found when they pass in front of their star, any planet further out than Earth could not do that.
I MUCH prefer optimistic videos. It's true, you could be wrong. But, as the saying goes "I'd rather be optimistic and wrong, than pessimistic and right".
Pluto's orbit is irregular like a comet, but spherical like a planet... Hence, it being a dwarf planet. It is a planet, just not the same as the 8 known planets. There's multiple dwarf planets in the Kuiper Belt. So if Pluto is a planet to you, why aren't you also included the other dwarf planets? Sounds like a dogmatic belief of what you're told to believe as a child.

I think you forgot we now have a _new_ instrument that could be used to look for Planet Nine: the _James Webb Space Telescope_ (JWST). The extremely high resolution offered by JWST (and searching in the infrared range) could mean we could finally detect this mysterious planet within the next 10 years.
Yes and no. Infrared can be useful, but remember, it is just another wavelength of... light. And that thing ain't generatin' 1) heat or 2) light. It MIGHT be more useful for finding any moons this planet might have (if it exists and is that large, yes, it certainly will have some) because those, like Europa or Enceladus, might generate heat under their surface. Here's the problem though (same as with Hubble)... it's like looking for it through a soda straw. JWST is only good for finding that sort of thing if you have a reasonably decent idea where to look. And we don't. Not yet anyway.
What's bothering me and what I don't understand is how the James Webb telescope sees as far as the start of the big band and galaxies far far away, but this other planet so close to us we can't find?
Think of it this way. Take a soda straw tonight, and without orienting yourself just look straight up, and try to find Jupiter by looking only through the straw. And you KNOW what you're looking for. In a rudimentary way, this is why using JWST to find a planet--even one relatively close, but that is utterly dark AND we have no good idea where it is located--is not easy at all.
I’ve made calculations that show that P9 is Pluto, P10 is Eris and there is one more not observed yet, P11. But P11 will not have the characteristics that Caltech thinks. It will not have the size of 10 earths but will be around the size of Pluto and Eris, or even smaller. It will not have a semi major axis of 300 AU but 82AU or 100AU. And the most crazy is that actually there are already 13 official planets : 8 + 5 dwarves planets : ceres P4, Pluto P10, Makemake P11, Haumea P12 and Eris P13. Yes, dwarves planets ARE planets ! The same that giant planets are planets . Like the humans : some are giants : more than 2m10 tall, and some are dwarves : less than 1m40. Or is it that dwarves aren’t humans anymore ? If we wanted to exclude Pluto as a planet, we shouldn’t have created the category “dwarf planet”, but “giant asteroid” !!! So Pluto stays a planet, even if UAI (Alan Stern) say arbitrary that a planet should clean its orbit. Jupiter shares its orbit with Troyans and Greeks. And Pluto doesn’t share its orbit with plutinos : plutinos have orbits completely different from Pluto ! (Other inclinations, other longitude of node, other eccentricity, other argument of perihelion, etc…) So nothing to see ! They just have the same semi major axis and so the same resonance to Neptune… but there are not on the same orbit ! Far from it ! (But yes Troyans have the same orbit as Jupiter !) You want Pluto as a planet. So, for kids in school what would you choose, learn a list of 8 planets (without Pluto) or study a list of 50+ planet names?
There would only be two or three other planets if we included Pluto, the others you are mentioning aren't as round and geologically active as Pluto is, they also tend to be much smaller.
Could somebody explain to me why it seems so difficult to find the 9th planet. Surely with radio and large high-resolution telescopes it could be visualized. Potentially another decade before it is found, incredible.
So basically it's because any object beyond Pluto is really, really hard to see due to it's distance from the sun. You need special telescopes to even see Uranus, Neptune and pluto, seeing that far out is going to be incredibly difficult for current technology. Also, it's orbit is theorized to take 20,000 years to make one full rotation around the sun. Neptune only takes 300 years, mind you
There are other theoretical objects in space that could have a mass equivalent to 5 times the size of the Earth. That could perturb the orbits of these kuiper belt bodies. Objects that would be unobservable as they do not emit light or heat. It could be a small black hole.
NOT according to the Interplanetary bean-counters. There are reasons why Pluto should be classifed as a planet (and was for decades) and plenty of reasons as to why not. It's a "Toss-Up" and I can go either way. It's orbital plane is quite 'tillted' when compared with the general planetary plane and at times, so elliptical for about 20 years it orbits nearer to the sun than does Neptune. However, when Pluto was sumarily demoted to "Stellar Debris Object" I did join the loud demonstrators, receiving about the similar amount of attention as did Trump when asked not to waste his time rerunning for President, but should instead, stop by the local animal shelter and apply as the Uncouth Local Dog Catcher (ULDC)!

The fact these simulations took into account even a minor tug from the other bodies in the solar system and came up with a .04 percent chance that planet 9 doesn't exist? It's out there. Do we need a planet to explain things here? Couldn't a cluster of kuiper belt objects that have a certain total mass have the same pull? Maybe a planet that has to yet form, or something like that. It might stand to reason a planet further way from the sun would take longer to form simply due to longer orbits and larger area to cover.
Absolutely! A cluster of Kuiper Belt objects with sufficient total mass could exert a similar gravitational pull. The idea of a planet taking longer to form due to its distance from the sun is also plausible.
I propose that the so-called ninth(or tenth) planet is actually a long dead black dwarf which has the same temperature as deep space and cannot be seen in the infrared.
That's an interesting idea! A black dwarf would be very hard to detect. However, black dwarfs are theoretical and none are expected to exist yet because the universe isn't old enough.

Perhaps… The NINTH “PLANET” is actually a mini BLACK HOLE. Thus, it would be impossible to see, but whether a black hole anomaly could exist in such a manner in orbit around a common star. Another question is… what does OUR SUN orbit around? Is our sun in a orbit of its own?
The first suggestion of Planet Nine was in 2016 by astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown. We haven't found it yet because it's likely very far from the Sun, making it hard to detect with current telescopes. Some scientists think the gravity effects could be caused by other things, like a group of small objects or even a black hole, but more research is needed.
Well, it's not "definitely there," however likely it now appears, and there continue to be differing estimates about its size, especially since our knowledge of its effect on TNOs is so incomplete. Look, it is strongly supported theoretically and it has been modeled well, but... "definite" means 100%. It's not until it is... and my anecdotal observation of astronomical discoveries is there are LOTS of things we haven't seen yet, or that continually reshape our projections of what "has to be." What seems more "definite" is that we'll prove (or falsify) its existence in the coming decade. Or two.

@@rpoutine3271 You forgot a couple: A planet must do three things: it must orbit a star, it must be big enough to have enough gravity to force a spherical shape, and it must be big enough that its gravity cleared away any objects of a similar size near its orbit.
I have been wondering... What if the dynamic equalibrium isn't reached yet? All those abnormalities are the result of a once off distrubance and the solar system is in the process off settling into one? Or maybe the density of space-time is distorted outside ort cloud? All these would cause a huge measurement error.
It would be awesome to find another planet in our solar system. I wonder if it would be a rocky planet or another giant gas planet. Either way, I would think its too cold and far away from the sun to have life on it... But who knows.
Honestly I don't know why they aren't asking Alex Jones where to look. A LOT of his theories might seem out there but they turned out to be true. Might as well use every resource you can, you know?

Wouldn't it be interesting if we find a little solar mass black hole? Or a very dark brown dwarf? I doubt both, because both a black hole and a massive Jupiter like Planet out there in the form of a brown dwarf would both release massive amounts of radiation we would have spotted decades ago. A black hole, brown or black dwarf or even the regular planet nine would have all been easily spotted by now by our telescopes that see things in the infrared and other spectrums outside of visible. We had no problem finding Neptune by calculating the gravitational perturbation it had on Uranus but somehow today with our advanced technology we are unable to find whatever is perturbing Neptune? Despite our technology of being able to see things in the infrared and radiation Spectrum? I said nothing more than a phenomenon caused by the collective grouping of transmission objects within a certain region of space creating a collective gravity well that pulls on Neptune and causes the orbits of other tno to pull in a certain direction.
Exactly. With today's Webb Space Telescope and other telescopes that see things outside the visible spectrum we would have located this anomaly decades ago . It is silly really when you realize Neptune was found so quickly when they calculated the perturbance of Uranus orbit, but now with today's modern Technologies we are unable to find whatever is perturbing Neptune?
Part of the excuse for downgrading Pluto from bona fide planetary status was it's eccentric orbit. This theoretical ninth planet 3x Earth Mass has an estimated orbit no different than that that of comets like comet Kohoutek , that come close once every Thousand Years. If Planet 9 with this eccentric orbit nowhere near our solar plane it's going to be counted as one of Sol's, then Pluto should be upgraded to planet and will have 9 and 10 (x)!
@@poplock174 No. You're either misunderstanding my usage of the word "probably" or you're purposely twisting it. Meaning there are probably HUNDREDS of dwarf planets in the outer Solar System versus there being say 40 or 60. I reckon it could even go into the thousands. I wasn't talking about planet 9. Again, there isn't a planet 9.
Apparently even with its highly eccentric orbit it should be visible if it has an atmosphere ! Could be a giant dirtball planet or even a brown dwarf ?

A horse is not a horse because of what Lane it's running in and it doesn't matter if another horse is in the same Lane nor does it matter if another horse likes to cross into the same Lane it's still a horse Pluto is still a planet it's intrinsically one because it has its own geological processes making it a living world The change in definition was not motivated for any scientific reason whatsoever and I'm not going to let a bunch of clowns doing something unscientific dictate definitions to me
If we can send a satellite towards the group of objects orbiting the hypothesized planet X, it should be possible/help us decide it's precise position! is int it ?
You're not looking in the right place. It's orbit isn't like the other planets. It has a polar orbit around the sun. It will approach from the south go around the sun between the asteroid belt and Jupiter then leave in the Northern sky and won't be back for 3600 years. It will be the size of Uranus and it will appear dark red. It will be hard to see because of dust and debris that it picks up on its way into the solar system.
Thanks for sharing! Planet Nine is still hypothetical, and its orbit is believed to be highly elliptical. Your description sounds more like Nibiru, a proposed object not supported by mainstream science.
