After a Labour landslide win (as predicted by your co-pilots) the rocket orbits into a new political galaxy, but is it the same old madness?
Allison delivers some hard truths to the Conservative party whom she thinks deserve ‘oblivion’ should they fail to come to the ‘correct conclusion’ on their new leader.
Whereas Liam thinks the Tories need to take their time when deciding their next leader and think carefully about the rules of the contest.
Joining your co-pilots on the rocket this week is former advisor to the Labour Party, John McTernan, who gives his take on the incoming Labour government and why he thinks their new Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, might need to think about bending some fiscal rules…
And there’s a very inspired email from one listener…

It's mostly true. Especially taking advantage of discounted time based tariffs to charge the car over night. Recharge a car at 5p/kWh and your cost per mile comes down to somewhat less than 2p/mile. Show me an internal combustion engined vehicle that costs that little to run.

I don't think the Conservatives should move "Left" or "Right" so much as they should move towards the electorate. I think the average Brit has moderate views on fiscal policy, immigration, and cultural issues: They want well-funded public services but not a bloated state. They don't want to close the borders, but they do want reasonable limits on net migration.
@_Stroda
@_Stroda 19 дней назад
Reasonable limits on immigration? Most people would likely agree with this. Most peoples' view on what is 'reasonable' is clearly garbage, though. Most people are ignorant to the point that their views aren't in any way rational. 'Moderate' views on fiscal policy? Eh. The public generally, quite clearly, want 'left wing' economic policies. Even if they vote Conservative / Reform. Even if they lap up the noise in the right wing media about 'scroungers'. Because, whether they're unable to see it or unwilling to admit it, many on the right are 'scroungers'. They are net beneficiaries. There's a great irony in that so many who throw around words like 'communism' and 'socialism' as criticisms are, effectively, parasites reliant upon the hard work of others themselves. Whereas so many of those they attack as being 'lefties', 'woke' or whatever, are simply highly educated, professional, more socially liberal types paying all the tax. When it comes to social policy, the split largely seems to be age related. With older voters being more socially conservative.
@TheMatthooks
@TheMatthooks 19 дней назад
For the vast majority, they couldn't care less about migration as long as the NHS works and we have a decent safety net.
@andybrice2711
@andybrice2711 19 дней назад
@@TheMatthooks I don’t think that’s true. People generally cited it as one of their top 3 issues in opinion polls around the election. And Reform took 4 million votes. I’d argue that immigration can either make or break those public services, depending on whether it’s managed sensibly. (Which in recent years, it hasn’t been.)

I'm 56 and haven't until now considered retirement. I have a second home. I don't wish to leave the country. If a wealth tax is introduced I would consider selling my PPR and giving up work and enjoying myself whilst I still can. The state can then look after me if/when I become unwell because, having disposed of my assets and spent my wealth, I won't be able to afford to do so. This is the law of unintended consequences.

In my opinion nobody has made "significant gains" from owning property in the UK, they have just kept pace with government debasement of the currency. But I suppose in a Labour party view that's fine.

Labour support is a mile wide and an inch deep. Starmes's own majority was halved from 2019 but nobody mentions this. He is also sitting on way north of 100 marginals come the next election. With the usual levels of dissatisfaction with any sitting government and they will be out on their backsides come 2029.

The right has, for many years, been happy to accept that FPTP, more often than not, has given us Conservative governments despite the majority of votes going to centre/left parties. It's really quite telling that so many on the right have suddenly decided that FPTP is unfair. This 'are the LDs going to continue campaigning for PR given that FPTP has, for once, given them a proportionate share of MPs' drivel that so many commentators are coming out with is pathetic, hypocritical nonsense. The LDs, immediately, came out and said that they would use their increased presence to further this goal. It's not surprising in the slightest. It is exactly what anyone who has voted for them, anyone who has paid them the attention that millions of votes warrants, would expect. But then, the hypocrisy of the right here is also what any observant, rational person would expect.
